With Irfaan Ali as President, Guyana is destined for greatness

DEAR EDITOR,

We are soon to become the envy of the Caribbean. Our dream of becoming an economic powerhouse will soon materialise. With the discovery of over 5 billion barrels of oil, Guyana is set to become a major oil producer. And given the high prospect of additional oil discoveries, investors are eager to enter our fledging financial heaven.
Moreover, our strategic position between Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) further opens up countless business opportunities; from shipping and railroad services to manufacturing and agriculture. Land, labour and capital, the three elements of production are in abundance. With the correct combination of fiscal and monetary regime coupled with astute and bold leadership, Guyana is undoubtedly destined for greatness.
However – and here is where it becomes interesting – under this current government that is an elusive dream. With all the riches that would likely flow, our citizens have zero chance of benefitting. In fact, things might even get worse because of the gross incompetence by the government.
Hence, there is no assurance that this Government will get anything right. If through a sleight of hand, they’ve managed to conceal the signing bonus for over 6 months, it is inconceivable what would transpire with the hundreds of millions that will follow.
But there is hope. And we now have the opportunity to right the wrong.
With Irfaan Ali as President, Guyana is destined for greatness. Putting politics aside, Irfaan Ali is the best Guyana has to offer. The nation is at a critical juncture where astute leadership and economic shrewdness is warranted, and Irfaan Ali is the only one who could deliver.
With the reversal of the numerous tax measures, implementation of a robust local content policy that would ensure our local businesses benefit from activities emanating from the oil sector, higher public servant wages, and generous cash transfers to parents and the elderly, our economic landscape would surely transform. And there is a ton more. However, in the interest of time, I will end here.
Yours truly,
Roger Samuels

Does Samuels realize that the 5 billion  barrels of oil belong to Exxon and not to Guyana?  The 2% Royalty is real and Guyana has to pay back Exxon hundreds of millions of dollars in exploration costs which will be a front end payment expected to last at least 5-7 years.  And I’m sure they will find a way to add on this fee and that fee and claim nonpayment and next thing you know all abbey dead and gone and Guyana still paying Exxon.

From day one of oil extraction, of the total production of oil, 75 % goes to "Recoverable Contract Cost" , 25 % called "Profit Oil" split by half, 12.5% goes to Exxon. Guyana get 12.5% plus the 2% royalty of all Petroleum produced and sold, less quantities used for fuel or transportation in Petroleum Operations.

Furthermore, all natural gas will belong to the GOG. Exxon has no interest in this.  Some will be piped, some processed into LNG using special ships.  Some will be exported, some used for domestic power gen.

Irfaan, when he takes over, will have enough money to buy a plane load of gold-plated university certificates!!

Ayuh just have lil patience.

Granger, Hinds, Thomas, et al have plans how to spend the first oil dollars.  Don't try to guess who will benefit. It's written on the wall who will get and who will not.  This country has never been this divided since the 1980s.

They will not be in power.

Keep on wishing !!

The only way for the Coalition to win  is by rigging the election and that’s what they will do.  You should know Django, if they had confidence of winning, they should have gone to the polls and not stalling the election  .. rite .

But there’s another side. The delay has allowed people like Shuman to gain traction which will make things complicated!

I agree with you  and the PPP has done nothing to improve their self image.

Their are thousands of folks who went over to AFC and wants to throw their support back to PPP but will abstain from voting either way because of the choice of PPP presidential candidate.

They were making headway then BJ pulled off Irfaan.  Those wavering felt nothing has really changed.  At least that’s how many of my relatives there feel.

In Guyana's PPP/PNC political tapestry complication caused by Shuman is good.

Keep on dreaming.  Exxon is struggling for survival.  Stock price is more than 10% down from a year ago.  Even the Guyana hype in the news didn’t help them.  They need every cent to pay their investors and shareholders.  Guyana will end up with their begging bowl once again.

Historically  the PPP was known as  a Hindustan Party, just look at their leaders way back.  Fronting Irfan Ali as the president will bring all the Black Muslims and cross over Indian Muslims. Generally Muslims are loyal to them Mattie. A relative just return after spending three weeks. Tension is high with lots of uncertainty,  but people of all races lost trust of the ruling government  and when comparing to the PPP term they enjoyed prosperity.  The hoped for change but saw nothing,  closing the sugar Estates also hurt Blacks, Harmon was chased out from Wales.

There aren't enough Muslims to tip the scale in the PPP favor. Plus Ali will be too busy in court with all those 19 charges so he would be as absent as Granger has been these past 4 years. Nandlall should have been elected to the be Presidential candidate because he is duly qualified as well as strong willed.

There is lots of arrogance in that chap.

Samuels would be better served by listing some reasons why Ali would cause Guyana to realize greatness. What he did here is akin to what the AFC does in regard to the PNC. All hallow statements.

Probably a mole how the ass is Ali right for that position. We all know why BJ chose him to run for the Presidency and it ain't because he's smart.

Ali only right for that position in he, Samuels and Jagdeo's head. There are a lot of better candidates in the PPP for the PPP Presidential Candidate position. Perhaps the only thing he may have going for him is Granger has proven to be very wicked.
