Guyana produces one of the finest coffees in the Caribbean and yet we allow this industry to die. Coffee is a billion dollar industry and everyone is trying to make money from it except we smart Guyanese.  It is about time we get into the game and start fighting for markets at home and abroad. Guyana can use our know-it-all expert, Stormy, to lobby Starbucks to buy our coffee. Let's get this man off GNI where he as become a intellectual fossil and put him to work for the betterment our country and its citizens.

Billy, for many years the home market for Guyana coffee has been depressing to farmers. In another thread I posted some production numbers. Local demand peaked in the 1980s, a period that coincided with the restriction of many commodity imports.

As you may know, Guyanese consumers at home generally prefer foreign goods even when local substitutes are available. That attitude is mainly responsible for the sad state of the coffee industry today. Low demand.

I think we can overcome that hurdle of Guyanese thinking our home products are inferior to what's imported. American TV broadcasts reach people all around world including Guyana. Guyanese are learning about the dangers of processed foods and the great benefits of organic or our locally grown foods. Guyana can eke out share of the domestic coffee market by using the four PPPPs in marketing - product, placement, price, and promotion. Our entrepreneurs and our local ad agencies have to work together in devising strategies to win the minds of the local consumers. It's not easy but it is possible. Do you recall the days when Guyanese were using foreign chicken?  About 90% of the chicken market was imported American chicken.  Today, that is no longer the case. The previous administrations assisted in the local poultry industry  and we saw spectacular growth.  Today foreign chicken is no longer dominant nor does the big fried chicken outlets like Kentucky use the imported meat. We can do the same with our coffee. It will create jobs and generate more earnings for the country.

Don't brag about your stationary bike.  Try riding a mountain bike.  I can take you on any day, any time.

Guyana can learn something from its sister Caribbean nation Jamaica which has been producing coffee for nearly 300 years running. The greater share of Jamaica's coffee is exported.

To oversee coffee production, the Ministry of Agriculture has a special department called the Coffee Industry Board. That Board in turn has an arm called the Coffee Industry Development Company which assists farmers who grow coffee on one or more hectares of land.

The Coffee Industry Regulation Act gives legal teeth to Jamaica's famous Blue Mountain brand.

Jamaica produced nearly 7,000 tons coffee in 2013.
