Nadira Jagan-Brancier

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Nadira Jagan-Brancier, the daughter of the late former President and founder of the PPP/C, Dr Cheddi Jagan, has made it clear that she is not supporting the APNU+AFC coalition; instead the Party her father founded will get her vote.

Jagan – Brancier made her position known in a letter, which appeared in today’s edition of the Stabroek News, two days after her brother, Dr Joey Jagan, officially endorsed the APNU+AFC coalition.

See full letter below:

Dear Editor,

It seems that there have been rumours that the children of Cheddi and Janet Jagan are supporting the APNU+AFC Coalition. I do not!

I am writing to let it be known that I support the People’s Progressive Party/Civic in the upcoming elections on May 11, 2015 and urge everyone to go out and vote early on that day for the Cup.

Yours faithfully,

Nadira Jagan-Brancier

It is most disappointing that Mrs N J-B supports and calls for support of most corrupt, immoral and deceitful Party in the last fifteen years of Guyana. A Party that ignores women's rights - one that failed to support a certain lady, who also disappointingly, despite her personal experiences - exhort others to vote for the PPP/C. Your brother Dr Joey Jagan, mam, is very practical, and he has seen the drastic shift and wealth accumulation of members of his and your parents' Party overnight - the crass attitude in governance, the lies and fears peddled at the various hustings. Your father, the late Cheddie Jagan would have been the most disappointed person to see the division that still pervades beautiful Guyana. However, there is hope now that that dream of his will be accomplished with this Coalition Goverment under the sincere and honest David Granger and a once held in high esteem in the PPP, Moses Nagamootoo. Guyanese are urged to support this new Administration and let Guyana progress unitedly - economically, socially and culturally.

Nadira Brancier-Jagan supported the PPP in the elections with some reluctance. Please note that her statement of support was very short, with no enthusiasm or no encouragement to others to vote PPP.

I suspect that uppermost in Nadira's mind was the fate of the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre. Since Cheddi Jagan died, Nadira made the CJRC the cause of her life. She has depended heavily on the PPP for financially sustaining the Centre. She probably feared a vengeful withdrawal of funding if she didn't openly state her stand for the PPP. She knows very well the mean nature of Freedom House functionaries.

Let's go soft on Nadira.

Joey has a great future in that 6 party coalition.

Watch wait and see.  Joey will become an executive of the AFC at the next National Conference.

Joey is being groomed as the son of Moses.

Warrior, we have to be fair to the man. In 1942 there were just a few highly educated Indian women in Guyana. Most Indian parents sent their daughters only to primary school. There were relatively few Indian girls with secondary school education and just a handful with university training.

If true, therein lies a fatal flaw of "our" great hero.  Good people should stick together, regardless of their race.  I wonder if Jagan would "stick" with BJ and that corrupt inner circle, then again, he might.

Hello Gilly,

Please clean the dust off the Dwarka Nath book on East Indians and check the East Indians ladies of high education at the time.

Also in the 40s when Jagan was in the US, circumstances  caused the meeting with his future wife. It could have happened to a Guyanese.

JJ talked extensively about their meeting, in an interview we did in 2007.

They met through her best friend Helen, who was also a nurse.

Cheddi and JJ  relationship was strong, even after her parents disagree. He never met her father and no one had a heart attack as mentioned in 'Thunder in Guyana'. JJ did not like the documentary.  She said some things was not accurate.

Arrange marriages still causes huge problems in Guyana. Mostly due to lack of communication, that leads to domestic violence.

Recently a 18 year old women, in a youth group, recently graduated from high school, was placed in an arranged  married with  a 40 year old man, but her father had  a logic to his decision.

Young women are being raped and not able to find a marriage partner. The father's logic, if the daughter is in an arranged marriage, he sees her in a secure environment. Age was not a consideration.

Hello Gilly,

Please clean the dust off the Dwarka Nath book on East Indians and check the East Indians ladies of high education at the time.

Siggy, thank you for reminding me. However, as you know, in 1942 it was not customary for Indian boys to court Indian girls before marriage, no matter the girls were educated. Indian parents held an iron grip over their daughters. They decided on mates for their daughters. I want to believe that, having graduated as a tooth doctor and not a general medical practitioner, hardly any parent would have been enthused to hand over their daughter to Cheddi Jagan. Also, Cheddi himself would not have wanted to join a Luckhoo, Jaikarran, Hanoman or any merchant family. In the USA, Cheddi was inspired by the Indian freedom struggle waged by Gandhi and Nehru. It was therefore natural for him to find common ground with Janet Rosenburg, a communist who gave solidarity to the Indian freedom struggle.

And, Siggy, think about this: which educated East Indian girl in 1942 would have given Cheddi those interesting and inspiring Little Lenin Books to read?
