Where are the Haitians? We are talking about 38 thousand black people who have disappeared. They are not in Guyana because 38 thousand French speaking people would be noticed. The countries around Guyana would have noticed 38 thousand black people who are not from there. I am thinking that they are being held as slaves on some of these massive interior plantations in Brazil as cheap labor.

Over 50 Haitian migrants allegedly abandoned in Guyanese jungle

Days after President Ali imposed a “visa” requirement for Haitians entering Guyana, several persons suspected to be Haitian nationals were reportedly seen in the Kurupukari area on Sunday.

Based on information circulating, about 50 men, women and children were reportedly begging for food and water after they emerged from the forest.

When contacted late Sunday evening, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said he was not in receipt of any information on the issue.

However, it is believed that the people have been abandoned by smugglers and were reportedly staying in the dense forest.

The revocation of the visa-free travel was done after it was discovered that most the 38,000 Haitians who arrived here since 2015 cannot be accounted for.

It is believed that most of these persons would have left illegally, using the “backtrack” to either Suriname or Brazil – places that demand visas for Haitians to enter. In fact, several busloads of Haitians were intercepted at Lethem, presumably on their way to Brazil last month.

However, the influx of Haitians to Guyana is viewed as a set of desperate poor people trying to better their lives following the collapse of their country’s economy.

Back in 2019, the then PNC Government had insisted that the Haitians weren’t being coerced to qualify as “trafficking in persons” (TIP).

The UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) says this about “migrant smuggling”: “Smuggling of Migrants is a crime involving the procurement for financial or other material benefit of illegal entry of a person into a State of which that person is not a national or resident. It undermines the integrity of countries and communities, and costs thousands of people their lives every year.”

Back in February the Brazilian Federal Police arrested 27 immigrants who entered Bom Fim illegally via Guyana’s borders.

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) had noted that of those arrested, there were 26 Haitian nationals and one Cuban.

“Some of the Haitians arrived in Lethem and were initially denied entry into Brazil, but it was suspected that they would try to use other routes to cross over, hence the information was passed on to Brazilian counterparts by CANU who then alerted their law enforcement units within the area,” CANU had stated.

Recently, Brazil’s Federal Police and CANU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to share information and conduct joint operations, involving narcotics and other criminal activities.

Guyana’s land borders with Brazil have been closed since March 2020.

Prashad would welcome 38 thousand Haitian brothers and sisters if they would convert to Hinduism from Catholic BC and change the Franco name to a Hindu and West African name. Prashad thinks that the Haitians would make excellent Hindus.

Hinduism preaches the very principle that there is no need for conversion; the wisdom of the universe is available to all, if only they're willing to seek it.

Haitians found abandoned on Linden-Lethem trail

Kaieteur News – Eighty-one (81) Haitians were rescued on Sunday by law enforcement officials after they were found abandoned and wandering along the Linden-Lethem trail around the vicinity of the Kurupukari Crossing.
Based on information received by this publication, two children were amongst the 81 persons that were found. Kaieteur News understands that the Haitians formed a group to flee to Brazil after the free-visa travel to Guyana for Haitian citizens was recently revoked by President Irfaan Ali.
The group was found and picked up by law enforcement officials and was taken to the Lethem Immigration office, where they were held in custody. However, some of them were released given the fact that their documents are legal and it is alleged that they were staying legally in Guyana but were attempting to flee to neighbouring country, Brazil before their six-month visas expired.
Some of the Haitians remain in custody as their documents have already expired. It is unknown as to how the group got to the location where they were picked up. It is believed that they were in the jungle for days with limited food and water.
In January 2019, then President David Granger had signed an immigration order for Haiti to be added to the list of countries whose nationals could travel to Guyana without any visa requirement. Last week, President Ali, as published in an Extraordinary edition of the Official Gazette on June 22, 2021, revoked that Immigration Order of 2019 in its entirety with immediate effect.
Ali’s revocation came the same day Attorney General Anil Nandlall announced that government would be implementing a visa requirement for Haitians and Cubans as a condition of entry into Guyana.
Earlier in June, 10 Haitian nationals were found at the Swiss Hotel, Skeldon, Berbice. It was reported that the Haitians said they were left there by persons who they claimed brought them into Guyana through Suriname and took away their passports and other documents.
Police are currently investigating reports that at least eight Haitians are being held against their will in Number 72 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six. Jairam Ramlakhan, Regional Commander, confirmed that a report was made and ranks visited the location but no one was found. Ramlakhan said that an investigation has been launched.
