Victim in Rexdale stabbing identified as 58-year-old mosque caretaker

Toronto police have identified the 58-year-old mosque caretaker who was killed in a stabbing in Rexdale Saturday night.

Police responded to a stabbing at the International Muslim Organization (IMO) mosque in the area of Rexdale Boulevard and Bergamot Avenue, west of Islington Avenue, around 8:40 p.m.

Rexdale stabbing

Police said a man who was working as a volunteer caretaker for the mosque was sitting in a chair outside the front doors, controlling the access to the building to comply with public health measures, when the suspect approached and stabbed him once.

When emergency crews arrived, they located the victim suffering from a stab wound to his neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have identified the victim as Toronto resident Mohamed-Aslim Zafis.

Investigators are searching for a male suspect with a slim build wearing a black hoodie and dark pants who fled the area on foot.

On Sunday, police released a security video of the suspect.

"It is a very vicious, gruesome attack," Const. Alex Li said. "You have somebody here, that's a caretaker at a mosque, and he was just out there doing his job. And the suspect, unfortunately, chose to end his life."

When asked if police are investigating it as a potential hate crime, Li said homicide investigators are not ruling that possibility, but at this time, the information they have does not suggest that it is a hate crime.

In a statement, IMO said they are “deeply saddened and shocked” to learn about the incident.

“There are no words for what happened to the member of this congregation,” the organization said.

“We further encourage our community not to speculate on what happened as the investigation is ongoing. Instead, we ask that you keep our brother and his family in your prayers.”

In a statement on behalf of the mosque, the National Council of Canadian Muslims said the building is closed and will reopen following the conclusion of the investigation.

The homicide unit is appealing for anyone witnesses and those with cell phone images, dashcam footage, and security video in the area to contact them at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Funeral to be held for man killed at Toronto mosque where he volunteered

A funeral will be held Wednesday for a man who was killed outside a Toronto mosque where he volunteered.

The International Muslim Organization of Toronto says it will honour Mohamed-Aslim Zafis, 58, who was stabbed to death Saturday evening.

Police say Zafis was killed by an unknown suspect while he sat outside the mosque as he controlled entry to the building in order to comply with public health protocols.

Police say there are many similarities between Zafis’ homicide and a nearby killing five days earlier.

Man charged with 1st-degree murder in connection with death of volunteer at Toronto mosque

Toronto police say a 34-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of a volunteer caretaker at a west-end mosque.

“This arrest is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of good people with the support of the community,” Supt. Ron Taverner told reporters Friday afternoon.

It was at around 8:40 p.m. on Saturday while 58-year-old Mohamed-Aslim Zafis was seated outside of the IMO Mosque on Rexdale Boulevard, near Islington Avenue, performing health screening at the front doors. Officers said he was stabbed once by a male suspect before they left.

After receiving information from the community, Homicide Squad Insp. Hank Idsinga said the accused was identified on Thursday and arrested on Friday.

“There doesn’t appear to be any motive and there doesn’t appear to be any known relationship between the accused and our victim,” he said.

Questions were raised about whether or not the death of Zafis was connected to the stabbing death of 39-year-old Rampreet (Peter) Singh since both were stabbed and in close proximity. His body was found off of the West Humber Trail underneath Highway 27 and near Humber College Boulevard on Sept. 7.

Investigators previously said Singh, who was homeless and lived under the bridge since April off and on, was believed to have been asleep when he was attacked by someone. It wasn’t known if he was targeted.

Idsinga was asked about a possible connection between the incident. He said the investigations are still ongoing and wouldn’t link the two stabbings.

“We continue to explore every possibility and we’ll go where the evidence takes us,” Idsinga said, adding officers are still trying to get search warrants related to the suspect arrested.

Toronto resident Guilherme “William” Von Neutegem was charged with first-degree murder. He is set to appear in a Toronto court.

The authorities are still investigating the death of Singh, no definite connection.
