Update: GECOM decides to increase number of polling places after meeting PPP

PPP General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo and his delegation meeting with the seven-member Guyana Elections Commission, Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield and Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), by a majority decision, has instructed  the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield to establish 12  additional polling places in order to address concerns by the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) that there would be confusion and congestion on Elections Day.

Election Commissioners Sase Gunraj and  Vincent Alexander said the 12 polling places would be in Mon Repos and Foulis villages, East Coast Demerara, and Chesney village, Corentyne. Gunraj said the number of polling stations would remain the same, but a number of them would be moved to new polling places. Gunraj recalled seeing 18 polling stations at a nursery school that would be used as a polling place.

β€œThat means there will not be that congestion at the two polling places- Mon Repos Primary and Mon Repos Nursery… Some of the polling stations will be used from those two schools to other locations,” he said. Gunraj said at this time no decision has been taken to use private residences but GECOM could possibly use tents.

The decision by GECOM came several hours after the seven-member electoral management authority held three hours of talks with a five-member PPP delegation led by its General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo.

GECOM envisages that just about 400 persons will vote at each polling  station.

Alexander said the Chief Elections Officer has been tasked with reviewing the polling places and possibly establish 12 additional polling places. β€œThere has been an appeal about some polling places and the CEO has been entrusted with the responsibility, based on the principle that we should seek to reduce the number of private places. He has been entrusted with the same responsibility to address the concerns raised by the opposition party,” Alexander said.

Mr Jagdeo says the number of polling places at private residences was reduced mostly in PPP strongholds instead of those for A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC).

Accompanying Mr Jagdeo in Tuesday’s talks were PPP presidential candidate, Irfaan Ali; former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, Joseph Hamilton and PPP Executive Secretary, Zulfikar Mustapha.

The Private Sector Commission and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana have been backing calls for GECOM to reverse its decision not to use several private residences as polling places.

The GECOM Chairman says the decision was based on a recommendation by the Carter Centre in its observation of the 2015 general election. In its recommendations back in 2015, the Carter Center report states that β€œBecause of the lack of state establishments in some areas, 166 of Guyana’s 2,299 polling stations are located in private buildings and residences. While the establishment of polling stations on private property did not seem to negatively influence public confidence in the electoral process, GECOM should ensure that citizens can cast their ballot in a neutral environment.”

The PPP has said if the polling stations are confined to government-owned buildings, voters will have to travel long distances and this will be a recipe for confusion and congestion at polling places.

You can contact PPPC and ask them.
Had it not been for Bharrat, we wouldn’t have even had elections yet and still you keep saying negative things about the man.

PNC was quite comfortable squatting in office. Being Politically neutral means that you need to be equally critical of the AFC PNC.

Sean, I suppose if you have not read my previous posts re: APNU/AFC and the evil practised by Bible Boy Granger.  If you don’t know the answer, I can understand. I do not appreciate your sarcasm. Looks like are also a stranger to the truth.

Bai Don, you are dodging And weaving. I don’t hear you criticizing Dog Shyte Moses and Ramjattan for selling out Guyanese and hiding in the belly of the PNC.

Do it man, spit it out.

It was Jagdeo who lead the charge with the NCV and eventually to CCJ, to elections. You have never given the man even one ounce of credit.

Credit has to be earned. He earned it before he resigned. When he named his replacement(s), he lost it. Samjhe!
