Washington (CNN)Donald Trump seems set to end 2015 as the dominant force in the race for next year's Republican nomination for president, with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz now a clear -- yet distant -- second after a strong debate performance, a new CNN/ORC poll released on Wednesday has found.

Trump tops the field with 39%, according to the poll of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters. That's more than double the share backing Cruz, who, at 18%, has inched up 2 points since the last CNN/ORC poll, which was taken in late November.

Trump has been a constant atop the polls since his ascent to the lead in July, and this new poll marks the first time Cruz stands significantly apart from the other candidates vying for the nomination. Behind those two, Ben Carson and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio have each slipped a few points and now stand tied at 10%.

Is this the luck of a lousy cat or Trump speaks what Americans like to hear?

OK so some one other than me thinks that Trump was sent by Bill Clinton to destroy the GOP.

No way that a man like this will be president. The USA loves to pretend that it is post racial and that every one has equal access to opportunity, and need only work hard to succeed.  Open bigotry like this opens up a nightmare that most Americans would rather pretend doesn't exist.

Why is he racist?  He is on record disagreeing with that judge making a comment about Blacks going to Ivy League.  The fact that he is anti-illegal immigration and the fact that he if [rightfully] suspect of Muslims does not make him racist.

Many Blacks suffer due to illegal immigration.  I have a couple of Afro Guyanese friends who have lil auto repair, lawn-care and handyman businesses.  They do good work but always get undercut by people using cheap illegal Mex and other immigrant.  I asked them about the politics and they think controlling illegals will afford them a better living.  I'm sure this could be multiplied 10's of thousands of times all over the US.  Diamond and Silk sees this!

Why you does waste time with that Racist Dog??????

I think Trump will do good for America, over all. And for all races in the country.

The Republicans are more for an organization with friends. Caring very little for Americans. Trumps have decimated their rhetoric. They are exposed.

Now, he is after the Clintons. This family has nothing to offer Americans. For them it is Camelot. All fake. Trumps' recent outburst on Hilary, is also to decimate her campaign.

However, the time has come for Trump to change strategy and show the serious and mature side of him. I look forward to his calm and collective speeches to come. He has given America his passion, atleast White Americans.

Trump said Mexicans.  He further stated that they are rapists and criminals when statistics show that undocumented immigrants from Mexico are LESS likely to engage in criminal behavior than are native born Americans.  THIS is what marks him as a racist.

Then he screamed that blacks who are advocating for fair treatment by the criminal justice system should go back to Africa, even though 75% of American blacks descend from people who were brought hear BEFORE the USA declared its independence. Why do these people NOT have the right to advocate for fair treatment by the police and the courts?

Do you know that there is net migration BACK to Mexico? Illegal immigration from Mexico ceased to be a problem since 2008.

So why his screams about illegal migration when that is NOT the biggest problem faced by the white working class.  And why doesn't he address the REAL problem.  Employers who hire people who they shouldn't hire. Will Trump advocate heavy sanctions for companies which do this.

I am still awaiting evidence from you that Trump has loads of blacks in senior management in his corporation.  The proof is in the pudding.  If he doesn't then clearly he doesn't think that blacks are capable.

Trump  is catering to the racial paranoia of a declining segment of the white population.  Rather than looking at the REAL PROBLEMS that these people face, he fools them to pandering to their innate bigotry.

Poor whites were sold a bill of trash by rich whites.  They were told that being white is a precious asset, and that poor whites should support the actions of rich whites, even when these actions were AGAINST the interests of poor whites. Poor whites then scapegoat blacks, immigrants, and now more recently Muslims, for their problems.

Trump panders to this, and is now rewarded with support from white supremacists. When these hooligans have attacked blacks, or people who they perceive to be Hispanic or Muslim has he condemned this?  Not loudly enough.

Trump will ensure that the benefits of America goes to people who live legally in America.  Illegals are one of the reasons healthcare is so expensive.  They can show up in any hospital and get good care with the taxpayers end up footing the bill.  Same for other services.  I could never figure out how these people get food stamps and eat better than the middle class who work to buy their food.  The system is broken.  Trump will fix it.

Bibi Haniffa

How can you defend illegals? They came here illigally. They commit crimes such as murder, identity theft, robbery, hit and run. If we were to commit a robbery or identity theft, we would be thrown in jail. Any murder or serious crimes, we would be stripped of our citizenship and deported.
The illegals knew they were breaking the rules when they got here and there is a chance they would be deported. What gives them special rights? Would Guyana or Trinidad tolerate this nonsense?

THat illegals burden the healthcare system is bunk. I do not know how an illegal person burden the welfare system. Most of the people on welfare are from southern states who are mainly GOP supporters. These are the ones conned to voting against their interest by panderers to their latent ethnic fears. It is statistically impossible for trump to become the President.

It is 11 months away from the Presidential elections in the US.

The numbers are what they are:

  • Trump polls 40% among Republican Primary voters.
  • Republican voters make up about 40% of the total voting population.
  • Trump's 40% of a general population of 40% = 16%.
  • The Democrats are about 40% of the general election votes and so Independents are the remaining 20%.
  • Give Trump half that and so he adds 20% to 16% and you get 36% of the general election votes.
  • You ask what happens to the non-Trump Republican voters - that's 34%. If Trump gets them all then he adds that to this 36% and he gets 70% of the votes in the general elections.

Trump gets as much as only about 30% of Independents, because a lot of them are Hispanics and women. Trump does not get all the non-trump Republicans. The Democrats over the last 2 election cycles have gotten more than the 40-40-20 split. The Independents have shrunk as the electorate gets more polarized.

caribny screams as usual about turnout and I think Trump will galvanize a lot of people- to vote AGAINST him. He kork duck and the GOP cyant sniff more than 45% of the General Election voters. So leave Trump alone to enjoy his 15 minutes of Apprentice fame. We'll get serious come the summer of 2016 at Convention time.

When last you went to Jamaica Hospital?  Ask about the billing and you will see who is paying for all those illegal people showing up there.  Statistically Trump is leading the polls.

Banna, you analyze the leaves and miss the forest.  I cannot say he will win, but leaving out the primary, in a head to head match up he polls in the 40's against Hillary.  Furthermore, he polls higher in anonymous on-line polling by 10 points as many more educated middle-class and the affluent prefer to stay away from controversy by using an establishment name when asked face-to-face.

From a UK observer in the Guardian newspaper -

John Kerry won the Democratic nomination in 2004, but in December 2003 he was rarely hitting 10% in the polls, while Barack Obama trailed Clinton by nearly 20 points at the end of 2007.

John McCain, the 2008 GOP nominee, was behind both Giuliani and Mike Huckabee in December 2007, and in several polls was in the fifth spot, behind Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

Four years ago the GOP candidate was Romney. He was 10 to 15 points behind Gingrich at this stage of the election.

There are other examples in earlier primary races too: in late 1991, Bill Clinton was polling at about 8%.

There are, of course, other elections in which the Democratic or theRepublican
candidate that was leading at this stage did go on to win the nomination. They included, among others, Ronald Reagan (1980), George HW Bush (1988), George W Bush (2000) and Walter Mondale (1984).

The point is this: the person who leads in the polls at this stage of the election may or may not win the nomination. Polling is one predictor in an election – and any definitive argument based on polls alone is inconclusive based on the evidence available.

In addition to historical precedent, there are other factors to consider when interpreting polls at this point in an election cycle.

First, a limited number of people are paying attention to the election at this stage.

On average, only one in three Democratic and Republican voters in Iowa and New Hampshire had come to a final decision before the final month of the campaign in the last two election cycles.

Assuming the same is valid today – and there is no evidence to suggest that it isn’t – this means that the vast majority of Republicans who will eventually cast a ballot have yet to decide how they will vote.

Secondly, polling this far out is influenced by a candidate’s name recognition. This tends to favour Trump due to his pre-existing public and media profile: more voters will be aware of Trump compared with other candidates – and will already have a clear opinion of him. Conversely, for example, about 30% still say they haven’t heard enough to make up their minds about Marco Rubio.

This could imply that Trump could struggle to substantially increase his support in the months to come. He will not only need the 30-odd percent of Republicans that currently support him to actually turn out – he will need far more voters than his current level of support suggests if he is to win the nomination.

I agree, it will likely be Rubio or Cruz who have better band width.  I think though, the "Trump effect" will make it's way into the main GOP platform.  Trump has energized a core base which felt neglected and overruled by slum dwellers and the welfare class.  They need to hold this base while reaching out to the wider community.  Hillary is doing well in the primary, but not a clear favorite in the general.  Her base and core has been defined, now it's for the GOP to chip away at the undecided.

That wall will be built.

Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, Bush Snr, Bush Jnr.  All republicans after the war. They can win elections too.

Unlike Guyana, Americans been electing their leaders on issues that affects their well being. The danger is to allow people with closed minds to determine the destiny of a progressive country.

I hope by a miracle Trump turns the tide.

Sad to see a man like Trump stooping so low.

When you have the country being run from the ghettos, when you see it being overrun by illegal hordes, when you see terrorists having a free rein abroad and in the homeland, even the most rational and decent folks will revert to survival mode, and then anything goes.

It's good to see we have someone willing to call a spade a spade.

Just think of the number of sacrifices Donald Trump is making and the business risk he is taking. He stands to be blacklisted, inside and outside of America. There has not been any politician that risks so much. I hope rational minded people recognizes his call to corrective actions.

U just doan understand their rights. And statistics are assumptions. I do hope Trump wins. For America, that hope is a necessity. Otherwise, White people will loose control of their country to fools. And these fools will never send their children off to war, like the White People do to empower idiots to speak trash about them.

White people will loose control of their country to fools.

Seig Heil !!!! The US is not that country of the 1950's you fantasize about.

Hello, come in to the 21st century and see how those coal-mining and factory jobs are no longer in America. White people used to be dominant in those industries. Is that the "loose control" you're wailing about?

Have you seen the innovators in Silicon Valley and the bio-med corridors in Massachusetts? A lot of them don't look white.

caribny said it right with this - Poor whites were sold a bill of trash by rich whites.  They were told that being white is a precious asset, and that poor whites should support the actions of rich whites, even when these actions were AGAINST the interests of poor whites. Poor whites then scapegoat blacks, immigrants, and now more recently Muslims, for their problems.

The thing is Seig-Heil-with-the-Nazi-salute seignet, you are not even white trash. If you believe in your color heirarchy of superiority among the races, you black-ass-trash is even worse!

I see that Trump has one racist bigot on his side.

Problem for you though is that YOU might get beaten up by the assorted white supremacists who endorse Trump. Has Trump condemned the bigoted violence committed by his supporters.  On at least one occasion the violence occurred WHILE HE WAS SPEAKING?

The people who get food stamps are NOT undocumented immigrants!  Many are the same illiterate whites who blindly support Trump, a man who has done well out of the increasing income inequality and crony capitalism which characterizes this country.

If they have American born children, they do collect food stamps and cash for them. They have 4-5 kids, they don't need to worry to go look for a job.

Trump republican contenders and the media are attacking him to get out of the race because of his hard-line stance, but Americans are fed up with what Obama creates on America, and need a man like Trump to cross traditional lines and care for Americans first; They are worried shit how to catch up with Trump in the poll. The next republican debate will shrink down to five candidates with Trump leading. The eliminators have a lot of catching up to do.

fed up with what Obama creates on America

So tell us Cobra, just exactly what did Obama create fro America?

More health care coverage? Saving the auto industry? Stabilizing the banking system and employment? Keeping Americans out of harm's way i unnecessary military adventures and letting others grow up and defend their own territories? Greater equality for the sexes (maternity leave, etc.) and human rights for the LGBT community?

What exactly did Obama create for Americans?

.....a man like Trump to cross traditional lines and care for Americans first

Tell us Cobra, which American politician does not care for Americans first? Tell us, why would Americans re-elect someone like that?

What exactly is this concept of "traditional lines" Cobra? What do you mean by that?

How 'bout it, eh?
