Raphael Trotman

Attorney-at-Law and Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Raphael Trotman was Thursday elected as Speaker of the National Assembly, ending weeks of speculation and negotiation between his party and the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

This is the first time that an opposition member would be Speaker of the 65-seat National Assembly.

Debra Backer

Members of the incumbent Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) voted along party-lines for Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran but its 32-seat plurality was not enough to win the simple majority.

That was because APNU's 26 members voted along with the AFC's seven seats.

Backer was the lone nominee for the position of Deputy Speaker.

Immediately after, Trotman's first order of business was the administering of the oath of office of all Members of Parliament.

get your addled brain together. Protestation and postulations are futile. The AFC was going to have it if the PPP held out and the APNU negotiated. Alas, they feel entitled and had idiots like you sending out the wrong smoke signals.

Trotman didn't turn over the party leadership to Ramjattan as he was supposed to do. They had agreed to rorate the Leadership every 2 1/2 years but it didn't happen.. Now he made a deal with the PNC to just the same... promises were made to Moses which he as Party Leader failed to comply with. The kind of speaker Guyana needs...

Once a crook always a crook.

A very prescient observation.

The question that will be then answered is which party is in a better shape to increase its votes.

There isn't going to be an election. This is what was expected in the xcase of a minority Government. The question that should be asked is, "will Trotman be fair?".

Today is a great day for Guyana and all Guyanese. When Jagdeo took over I thought he would have done great things for the country, but he turned out to be a corrupt Leader in bed with drug lords. My advice to Ramotar, start cleaning house and you could be greater than Burnham and his good friend Cheddi. cheers
PUT COUNTRY FIRST! clever

On what basis? The PPP cant have its way so it wants to put Guyana to the expense of another election within weeks of the last...inclusive of all the agitation which will be created?

Guyanese spoke. They dont want the PPP to copntrol parliament. Unless the PPP is telling Guyanese that they are too arrogant to respect the voters they need to sit down and accept certian facts.

albert I understand your panic. You fear that AFC and APNU will control the budget and elminate your job.

You must admit that typing nonsense all day is a poor use of taxpayers' money.
