1) AADMI AADMI KO KYA DEGAA:

POET: SUDARSHAN FAAKIR:

Aadamii aadamii ko kyaa degaa

What can one man gives to another?
Jo bhii degaa vahii Khudaa degaa

Whatever is given, it is given by God

Meraa qaatil hii meraa munsib hai

My judge is my murderer too
Kyaa mere haq mein faisalaa degaa

How can he give judgement in my favour

Zindagii ko qariib se dekho

If you look at this life closely
Isakaa cheharaa tumhein rulaa degaa

The  face of this life will make you cry

Hamase puuchho dostii kaa silaa

Dont ask what I get for my friendship
Dushmanon kaa bhii dil hilaa degaa

As the enemies heart will be melted

Ishq kaa zahar pii liyaa "Faakir"

I can drink the poison of love "Faakir"
Ab masiihaa bhii kyaa davaa degaa

What medicine can a messiah now give?

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

What do we know about The Poet: Sudarshan Faakir?

Sudarshan Faakir (1934 – 2008) was an Indian poet and lyricist whose ghazals and some nazms were sung by Begum Akhtar and Jagjit Singh.

Faakir belonged to the small and diminishing tribe of non-Muslim Urdu poets from East Punjab. Sudarshan Faakir is the first lyricist to have won a Filmfare Award for his very first song. Apart from the hits like Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti, he was famous for a religious number - Hey Ram... Hey Ram. He is the Writer of National NCC Song of India- Hum Sab Bhartiya Hain. Apart from Non-Film Music, Sudarshan Faakir has Penned Songs from various films also.

Sudarshan ‘Faakir’ was the favourite poet of ‘Mallika-e-ghazal’ Begum Akhtar in her last phase, She sang five of his ghazals. He was also the co-traveller of Jagjit Singh, an association that began with ‘Woh kagaz ki kishti, woh barish ka pani’ in 1982.

Faakir was an MA in political science and English from DAV College, Jalandhar. Active in dramatics and poetry right from his college days, he directed Mohan Rakesh’s play “Ashaar ka ek din” in his youth. He lent his voice to AIR, Jalandhar before he left for Bombay where he later wrote for music directorJaidev. His song ‘Zindagi, zindagi, mere ghar aana zindagi' from Bhim Sen’s ‘Dooriyan’ as well as dialogues for the film ‘Yalgaar’ are popular till date. It is also claimed that the song, “Hum sab Bhartiya hain”, which is sung at the NCC camps across the country, was penned by him.

A perfectionist to the core, he labored hard over his poetry. Faakir is perhaps one of the last of the tribe of vanishing poets who lived for poetry and it is noteworthy that he put together his poetry in an anthology and published his first ‘diwan’ only after he became a much-celebrated poet

2) CHARAAG AFTAAB GUM BARI HASEEN RAAT THI

POET: SUDARSHAN FAAKIR

Charaag aaftaab gum, bari haseen raat thee
The lamp and the sun disappeared, what a beautiful night it was
Shabaab ki naqaab gum, bari haseen raat thee
The Beauty was suddenly unveiled, what a beautiful night it was

Mujhe pila rahe the wo ke khud hi shamma bujh gayee
I was served drinks by her, suddenly the candle was extinguished
Gilaas gum, sharaab gum, bari haseen raat thee
The glass and alcohol disappeared what a beautiful night it was

Likha tha jis kitaab mein ke ishq to haraam hai
It is written in the holy book that "To Love" is sin
Huyee wohi kitaab gum, bari haseen raat thee
Well that book disappeared, what a beautiful night it was

Labon se lab jo mil gaye, labon se lab hi sil gaye
When my Lips touches hers, the lips became inseparable
Sawaal gum, jawaab gum, bari haseen raat thee
No need for questions and answers what a beautiful night it was

Dhal gayaa aafataab ai saaqii

Laa pilaa de sharaab ai saaqii

C'mon my dear make me a drink

Yaa suraahii lagaa mere muunh se

Either let me put the bottle to my lips
Yaa ulat de naqaab ai saaqii

Or unveil and get me drunk from your beauty

Maikadaa chhod kar kahaan jaauun

Where should I go if I leave the tavern
Hai zamaanaa Kharaab ai saaqii

The world out there is a very bad place

Jaam bhar de gunaahagaaron ke

Top up the drinks for us sinners
Ye bhii hai ik savaab ai saaqii

That is also a kind reward my dear

Aaj piine de aur piine de

Let me drink today just let me drink
Kal karenge hisaab ai saaqii

Tomorrow we shall do the accounting

Ranjana's Note:
THIS GHAZAL REFLECTS THE TIMES OF NAWABS SITTING IN THE MEHFILS, WHERE THEY
WERE SERVED ALCOHOL BY BEAUTIFUL COURTESANS AND ENJOYED THE MUSICAL TALENTS
AMONGS'T OTHER THINGS. THINK OF PAKEEZA-- (CHALTE-CHALTE, YUN HI KOI MIL GAYA
THA-) THERE THE COURTESAN WAS SINGING AND HERE YOU HAVE THE PERSPECTIVE OF
HER CLIENT. ENJOY

This one is so cool, soul stirring, even my good buddy who is not so keen on Jagjit, will tell you that this one is heavenly.
When a man indulges in so much sharab, the words and the thoughts comes naturally, even the voice is so soothing and appears to be pulling a string of one's heart.
A favorite of mine and I am sure that many will like this one.

4) YE DAULAT BHI LELO YE SHOHARAT BHI LELO

Ye daulat bhii le lo, ye shoharat bhii le lo

Take this wealth, take this fame as well
Bhale chhiin lo mujhase merii javaanii

Snatch the youth from me if you so wish
Magar mujhako lautaa do bachapan kaa saavan

But return to me those memories of  childhood
Vo kaagaz kii kashtii, vo baarish kaa paanii

Of the paper boats in the downpour of rains

Muhalle kii sabase nishaanii puraanii

The oldest signs of the area still remains
Vo budhiyaa jise bachche kahate the naanii

That old lady, the children used to call Naani
Vo naanii kii baaton mein pariyon kaa Deraa

That camp of fairies in granny's talk
Vo chahare kii jhuriryon mein sadiyon kaa pheraa

That guard of ages in the wrinkles of  the face
Bhulaaye nahiin bhuul sakataa hai koi

Even if one try to forget they will not be able to
Vo chhotii sii raatein vo lambii kahaanii

The small nights with tall stories

Kadii dhuup mein apane ghar se nikalanaa

Going out of the house when the sun is strong
Vo chidiyaa vo bul-bul vo titalii pakadanaa

The catching of birds and nightingales and butterflies
Vo gudiyaa kii shaadii mein ladanaa jhagadanaa

The fighting that takes place on dolls wedding
Vo jhuulon se giranaa vo gir ke sambhalanaa

The falling from swings and be on your feet again
Vo piital ke chhallon ke pyaare se tohafe

The lovely gifts of rings made out of brass
Vo TuuTii huii chuudiyon kii nishaanii

The souvenirs of broken Bangles

Kabhii ret ke uunche Tiilon pe jaanaa

Sometimes going on the high sand hills
Gharonde banaanaa banaake mitaanaa

Making sand castles and destroying them
Vo maasuum chaahat kii tasviir apanii

The picture of the innocent face of love
Vo Khvaabon khilaunon kii jaagiir apanii

The estate of dreams and  toys
Na duniyaa kaa Gam thaa na rishton ke bandhan

Neither there was the sorrow of worlds or bonds of relationship
Badii khuubasuurat thii vo zindagaanii

It was all so beautiful, such was life

5) SHAYAD MAIN ZINDAGI KI SAHAR LEKE AA GAYA

Shayad main zindagi ki sahar le ke aa gaya
Perhaps I have come back with the new dawn of my life
Qaatil ko aaj apne hi ghar le ke aa gaya
I have brought my murderer to my home

Taa umr dhoondta raha manzil main ishq ki
My entire life I kept looking for my love's fulfillment
Anjaam ye ke garde safar le ke aa gaya
And the result was that I came back empty handed

Nashtar hai mere haath mein kaandhon pe maikada
I have a dagger (drink) in my hand and my body is like a bar
(An alcoholic carrying the burden of their body till they die)

Lo main ilaaje dard-e-zigar le ke aa gaya
There, I have come back with a treatment for my pained heart

Faakir sanam maikade mein na aata main lautkar
Faakir, my friend, I would not have come back to the bar
Ik zakhm bhar gaya tha idhar le ke aa gaya
But one of my many wounds had healed, I am back for a new one

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

POET: AHMAD FARAZ

Ahmad Faraz was born Syed Ahmad Shah  on January 12, 1931 in Kohat, was a Pakistani Urdu Poet. He was considered one of the great modern Urdu poets of the last century. 'Faraz' is his pseudonym (takhalus) in Urdu. Faraz died in Islamabad on August 25, 2008.

Faraz has been compared with Faiz Ahmad Faiz, holds a unique position as one of the best poets of current times, with a fine but simple style of writing. Even common people can easily understand his poetry. Ethnically a Hindkowan, Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University. He later became lecturer at the Peshawar University. He was awarded Hilal e Imtiaz, Sitara i Imtiaz and after his death Hilal e Pakistan by the government of Pakistan.

Faraz was born in Kohat, Pakistan to Syed Muhammad Shah Barq. His brother is Syed Masood Kausar. In an interview with Rediff he recalls how his father, once bought clothes for him on Eid. He didn't like the clothes meant for him, but preferred the ones meant for his elder brother. This lead him to write his first couplet:

Sab kay waste laye hein kaprye sale se

Laye hein mere liye qaidi ka kambal jail se

(He brought clothes for everybody from the sale)

(For me he brought a blanket from jail)

His parents asked him once to learn mathematics from a class fellow during the summer vacation. But he was weak in mathematics and geography, he didn't remember maps and roads.

He was from a respectable family of Syed, descendents of ''Haji Bahadar" a famous saint of Kohat, he moved to Peshawar with entire family. Studied in famous Edwards College, Peshawar and then did his Masters in Urdu and Persain from Peshawar University.

Literary and Political life

Outspoken about politics, he went into self-imposed exile during the Zia ul Haq era after he was arrested for reciting certain poems at a Mushaira criticizing the military rule. He stayed for 6 years in Britain, Canada and Europe before returning to Pakistan where he was initially appointed Chairman Academy of Letters and later chairperson of the Islamabad-based National Book Foundation for several years. He has been awarded with numerous national and international awards.

He was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2004, in recognition of his literary achievements. He returned the award in 2006 after becoming disenchanted with the government and its policies.

"My conscious will not forgive me if I remained a silent spectator of the sad happenings around us. The least I can do is to let the dictatorship know where it stands in the eyes of the concerned citizens whose fundamental rights have been usurped. I am doing this by returning the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (civil) forthwith and refuse to associate myself in any way with the regime..." a statement issued by the poet.

About his current writings he says: "I now only write when I am forced to from the inside." Maintaining a tradition established by his mentor, the revolutionary Faiz Ahmad Fiaz, he wrote some of his best poetry during those days in exile. Famous amongst poetry of resistance has been "Mahasara". Faraz was also mentioned by actor Shahzada Ghaffar in the Pothwari/Mirpuri telefilm "Khai Aye O".

Despite his deteriorating health, he was quite active in the Judicial Crisis, in 2007. He joined personally the lawyers to protest against the government, and also encouraged his colleagues to do the same.

Death

Faraz died from kidney failure in a local Islamabad hospital on 25 August 2008. His funeral was held on the evening of 26th, by many admirers and government officials at H-8 Graveyard, Islamabad, Pakistan.

6) RANJISH HI SAHI DIL HI DUKHANE KE LIYE AA

Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhane ke liye aa
Aa phir se mujhe chod ke jaane ke liye aa

Let it be anguish, come to pain my heart

Come once if only to desert me again

Pehle se marasim na sahi phir bhi kabhi to
Rasm-o-reh duniya ki nibhane ke liye aa

It wasn't agreed upon before but still once

Come just to fulfill the customs and ways of this world

Kis kis ko bataayenge judaaii ka sabab hum
Tu mujh se kafa hai to zamane ke liye aa
How many people will I explain my grief to?
If you are mad at me, come just for the sake of this world

Kuch to mere pindaar-e-muhabbat ka bharam rakh
Tu bhi kabhi mujh ko manane ke liye aa
Have some concern for the pride of my love
Some day, come just to appease me

Ek umr se hoon lazzat-e-giriya se bhi mehroom
Aye raahat-e-jaan mujh ko rulaane ke liye aa
For a lifetime I have been devoid even of the taste of tears
Oh peace-of-mind, come just to make me cry

Ab tak dil-e-khush faham ko tujh se hain ummiiden
Ye aakhri shamme bhi bhujaane ke liye aa
My wise heart still harbors hopes of you
Come, just to put off even this last flame

Maana ki muhabbat ka chupaana hai muhabbat
Chupke se kisi roz jataane ke liye aa
Agreed, silencing your love is the real form of love
Some day, come to silently express your love

Jaise tujhe aate hain na aane ke bahaane
Aise hi kisi roz na jaane ke liye aa
The way you find excuses to not come,
Some day, come with an excuse to stay forever

7) AB KE HUM BICHADE TO SHAYAD KABHI KWABON MEIN MILEIN

Ab kay hum bichday to shaayad kabhi khawabon may milein,
This time if we part, then we may meet in the dreams
Jis tarah sookhay huey phool kitabon mein milein
Like dry flowers that are found in books

Dhonda ujray huey logon main wafa ke moti

Look for pearls of committment in ruined people
Yeh khazane tujhe mumkin hai kharabon may milein

Maybe you can find this treasure in bad people

Tu khuda hai na mera ishq farishton jaisa,
Neither you are God nor is my love like an angel,
Dono insaan hain to kyon itnay hijaabon mein milein
If we both are human beings, then why should we meet in hiding

Ghum-e dunya bhi ghum-e yaar mein shamil kar lo
Why not add the sorrows of the world to the sorrows caused by my beloved
nasha bartha hain sharabein jo sharaboon main milein
After all when the drinks are mixed, the intoxication increases

Ab na woh main hoon na tu hain na woh maazi hai `Faraaz',
You and I are not the same, nor do we have the same destination Faraz
Jaisay do saayey tamana kay sehraon mein milein

Kab main ne ye kahaa thaa sazaayein mujhe na do

When did I say, please dont punish me for it?

9) ZINDAGI SE YEHI GILA HAI MUJHE

Zindagi se yehi gila hai mujhay

This is my complaint about life
Tu buhat dair se mila hai mujhey

I spent so much of it without meeting you

Tu muhabbat se koi chaal to chal

To talk about love and to wish for love
Haar jane ka hosla hai mujhay

It is not easy to recognise love

Hum'safar chahiye hujoom nahi

I want a companion not a crowd
Aik musafir bhi qafila hai mujhay

A co traveller is like a caravan for me

Dil dharakta nahi sulagta hai

The heart beats no more but burns
Woh jo khawahish thi aabla hai mujhay

The desire in it has turned into a blister

Lab kusha hoon tu iss yaqeen k saath

I speak out in full confidence that
Qatal honay ka hausla hai mujhay

I have the courage of facing death

Kaun janay ke chahto'n may Faraz

Who knows in these yearnings oh 'Faraz'

Kya ganwaya hai kya mila hai mujhay

What has been lost and what has been gained?

Karoon na yaad magar kis tarha bhulaoon use
Stop remembering her, I can but how could I forget her?
Ghazal bahana karoon aur gun-gunaoon use
I can pretend she is a love song, and sing on

Woh khaar khaar hai shaakh-e-gulab ki manind
She is all thorns, just like a rose branch,
Main zakhm zakhm hoon, phir bhi gale lagaoon use
I am all wounds, yet I would embrace her

Yeh log tazkiren karte hain apne logon ke
These people keep talking about their loves,

Main kaise baat karoon, aur kahan se laoon use
How shall I speak, and from where shall I produce her?

Magar vo zud faraamosh zud ranj bhi hai
Ke ruth jaaye agar yaad kuchh dilaaun  use

Vahi jo daulat-e-dil hai vahi jo raahat-e-jaan
Tumhaari baat pe ai naasiho ganvaaun use

Jo humsafar sar-e-manzil bichad raha hai 'Faraz'
The companion who leaves Faraz at the destination,
Ajab nahin hai agar yaad bhi na aaoon use
It is not surprising if she does not even remember me

MUJH SI PEHLI SI MOHABAT: Translated by Ayesha Khanna

Mujh se pehli si mohabbat meray mehbub na maang
Don’t ask me for the love I once gave you, my love

Mein ne samjha tha kay tu hai to darakhshaan hai hayaat
I thought if I had you, life would shine eternally for me
Tera gham hai to gham-e-dahar ka jhagdra kya hai
With your heartaches, those of the universe would fade
Teri surat se hai aalam mein bahaaron ko sabaat
Your face would bring permanence to every spring
Teri aankhon ke sivaa duniya mein rakkha kya hai
What is there to treasure in this world but your eyes?
Tu jo mil jaaye to taqdir niguun ho jaaye
If I found you, my fate would bow down to me
Yun na tha mein ne faqat chahaa tha yun ho jaaye
It was not so, merely how I wished it to be
Aur bhii dukh hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke sivaa
The times hold sorrows besides those of love
Raahaten aur bhi vasl ki raahat ke sivaa
There is happiness other than the joy of union

Anaginat sadiyon ki taarik bahimanaa talism
The dreadful magic of uncountable dark years
Resham-o-atalas-o-kamkhvaab mein bunavaaye huye
Woven in silk, satin and brocade
Jaa-ba-jaa bikate huye kuuchaa-o-baazaar mein jism
Bodies sold in every corner of the market
Khaak mein lithade huye khuun mein nahalaaye huye
Covered in dust, bathed in blood
Laut jaati hai udhar ko bhi nazar kyaa kije
Still returns my gaze in that direction, what can be done?
Ab bhi dilkash hai tera husn magar kya kije
Even now your beauty is tantalizing, but what can I do?
Aur bhii dukh hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke sivaa
The times hold sorrows besides those of love
Raahaten aur bhi vasl ki raahat ke sivaa
There is happiness other than the joy of union

Mujh se pehli si mohabbat meray mehbub na maang
Don’t ask me for the love I once gave you, my love

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

POET: DAAGH DEHLVI

Nawab Mirza Khan (1831–1905) commonly known as Daagh Dehlvi, was an outstanding Mughal poet famous for his Urdu Ghazals and belonged to the Delhi school ofUrdu Poetry. He wrote poems and ghazals under the takhallus (Urdu word for name of fame) Daagh Dehlvi (the meanings of Daagh, an Urdu noun, include stain, grief and taint while Dehlvi means belonging to or from Delhi).

Life

He lost his father at the age of six and was brought up by his stepfather, Mirza Muhammad Fakhroo, who was heir to Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor. On Fakhroo's death in 1865, Daagh left Delhi for Rampur where he went into government service and lived comfortably for 24 years. There followed a period of wandering and discomfort which ended when he was invited to Hyderabad in 1891. There he won his fame as an Urdu poet and lived a life of luxury. Hyderabad was a cradle to many poets of that period following the decline of Mughals in Delhi. He died in 1905 at the age of 74 in Hyderabad India.

Poetry

Daagh had started reciting poetry at the age of ten. His forte was the ghazal. His poetry does not wallow in despair. The tone of his poems is rather exuberant. He was a self-acknowledged romantic but contrary to the impression one gets from his poetry, he eschewed wine. Usage of common words and phrases and thus simplicity was distinctive of his style. His work comprises four volumes consisting of 16,000 coouplets.

Daagh mostly wrote ghazals which are sets of two-line couplets. Some of his couplets are highly quotable. For example, Tu hai harjai to apnaa bhi yehi taur sahi, tu nahin aur sahi, aur nahin, aur sahi

Having remained under patronage of highly established poet like Zaug, Daagh had numerous disciples including the poet of the East Allama Iqbal, Jagar Moradabadi, Seemab Akbarabadi and Ahsen Marehravi, though a widely quoted anecdote relates that when asked to designate his successor as the leading Urdu poet of his age, he replied Bekhudain [the two Bekhuds], referring to Bekhud Badauyuni and Bekhud Dehlvi.

His ghazals have been sung by noted ghazal singers including Ghulam Ali, Malika Pukhraj, Mehdi Hassan and abida Parveen.

11) GHAZAB KIYAA TERE VAADE PE AITABAAR KIYAA

Gazab kiyaa, tere vaade pe aitabaar kiyaa
What a blunder it was to believe in your promises
Tamaam raat qayaamat kaa intezaar kiyaa
The entire night I waited for this disaster

Hansaa hansaa ke shab-e-vasl ashk-baar kiyaa
After all the laughter, you filled out the night of union with tears
Tasalliyaan mujhe de-de ke beqaraar kiyaa
After falsely consoling and comforting me you made me restless

Ham aise mahv-e-nazaaraa na the jo hosh aataa
I was so immersed in your love, I was uncogniscent of any deceit
Magar tumhaare taGaaful ne hoshiyaar kiyaa
But it was your indifference that made me aware of your deceit

Fasaana-e-shab-e-Gam un ko ek kahaanii thhii
My tale of sadness of that night was but a story for you
Kuchh aitabaar kiyaa aur kuchh naa-aitabaar kiyaa
Like a fictional story, you believe in some and disbelieve in others

Ye kisane jalvaa hamaare sar-e-mazaar kiyaa
Who has graced the head of my tomb with their presence
Ki dil se shor uThaa, haa_e! beqaraar kiyaa
My heart has cried out, even in my grave you have made me restless

Tadap phir ai dil-e-naadaan, ki Gair kahate hain
The world is asking me again, to feel the pain, oh my innocent heart
Aakhir kuchh na banii, sabr ikhtiyaar kiyaa
When nothing worked then I took the path of patience

Bhulaa bhulaa ke jataayaa hai unako raaz-e-nihaan
In trying to forget, I have finally exposed the secret buried deep in my heart
Chhipaa chhipaa ke mohabbat ko aashakaar kiyaa
After ages of hiding I have finally revealed my love for you

Tumhen to vaadaa-e-diidaar ham se karanaa thaa
I thought I was special when I made a promise to make an appearance
Ye kyaa kiyaa ke jahaan ko ummiidavaar kiyaa
What have you done? now the whole world expects to see me

Ye dil ko taab kahaan hai ke ho maalandesh
Did this heart has the strength to doubt you and think of the consequences
Unhone vaadaa kiyaa ham ne aitabaar kiyaa
You promised and I believed you

Na puuchh dil kii haqiiqat magar ye kahate hain
Don't ask the reality of this heart, but they say
Vo beqaraar rahe jisane beqaraar kiyaa
The one who made you restless, will ramain uneasy themselves

Kuchh aage daavar-e-mahashar se hai ummiid mujhe
The only expectation I have is from God
Kuchh aap ne mere kahane kaa aitabaar kiyaa
But you did believe a bit on me

Who took up residence, and whose place was it?

Vafaa karenge nibhaayenge baat maanenge
I will remain faithful, keep my word, do as you wish,
Tumhein bhii yaad hai kuchh ye kalaam kis kaa thaa
You must remember, whose song was this?

Guzar gayaa vo zamaanaa kahiin to kis se kahiin
Those days have gone by, who will listen to me?
(Khayaal dil ko mere subah-o-shaam kis kaa thaa)
My thoughts day and night, of whom were they?

Vo qatl kar ke har kisii se puuchhate hain
She took my life, and asks everyone,
Ye kaam kis ne kiyaa hai ye kaam kis kaa thaa
Who did this, whose work was it?

Na puuchh-taachh thi kisii kii na aav-bhagat
No one asked questions, there was no warm welcome (when I came)
Tumhaari bazm mein kal ehatamaam kis kaa thaa
But who was it that got so much caring in your company yesterday?

Hamaare Khat ke to purze kiye pa.Dhaa bhii nahiin
You tore my letter to pieces, did not even read it,
suna jo tum ne baa-dil vo payaam kis kaa thaa
But you listened with all your heart, whose message was that?

Inhiin sifa'at se hotaa hai aadamii mashahuur
It is through such qualities that one achieves fame
Jo lutf aap hi karate to naam kis kaa thaa
If she is doing the favours, who is taking the credit?

Har ek se kahate hain kyaa "Daag" bevafaa nikalaa
She says to everyone, "see how unfaithful Daag turned out"
Ye puuchhe in se ko_ii vo Gulaam kis kaa thaa
Somebody please ask her, whose slave was he?

14) UZR AANE MEIN BHI AUR BULAATE BHI NAHIN

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Baa'is-e-tark-e-mulaaqaat bataate bhi nahin
You don't inform me of reasons for terminating relations, either!

Kya kaha phir toh kaho "Hum nahin sunte teri"
What did you say? Please repeat, "I do not listen to you."
Nahin suntey toh hum aiso ko bataatey bhi nahin
If you do not listen, I also do not speak to such people, either!

Khoob parda hai ke chilaman se lage baithe hain
There is much hidden when you are sitting alongside the curtain
Saaf chupte bhi nahi saamane aate bhi nahin
You do not clearly hide and do not come forward, either!

Ho chuka qata ta'lluq toh jafaayen kyon hon
If the relation has been severed, why continue oppressions?
Jinko matalab nahin rahataa hai woh sataate bhi nahin
Those who no longer have a reason to, do not tease, either!

Zist se tang ho ae Daag toh jeetey kyon hon
If you are sick of life, O Daag, then why do you live?
Jaan pyari bhi nahin jaan se jaate bhi nahin
Life is not valuable to you and you do not leave it, either!

Daag's wit is so refreshing.. he makes sentimental points in the most brilliant of ways. The things he says in this poem, had they been said by someone else might sound depressing. His choice of wordings is so cutting... but one never gets bored or down while reading/listening. Truly a remarkable poet!

Ajab apna hal hota jo visal-e-yar hota

Strange, if my beloved had come to see me,

Kabhi jan sadqe hoti kabhi dil nisar hota

Momentarily, I would rendered my heart and soul for her.

Na maza hai dushmani main na hai lutf dosti main

There is no charm in enmity nor pleasure in friendship
Koi gair gair hota koi yar yar hota

Someone has to be an enemy and someone a friend

Ye maza tha dillagi ka k barabar ag lagti

Amazing it would be if we both had the same fire of love
Na tumhen qarar hota na hamain qarar hota

Neither you nor me would have been at ease

Tere wade par sitamagar abhi aur sabr karte

My merciless beloved, patience on your words of promise
Agar apni zindagi ka hamain aitabar hota

With a guarantee of my life any more

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

POET: FAIZ AHMED FAIZ:

FAIZ AHMED FAIZ:

Faiz Ahmad Faiz was an influential left-wing intellectual, revolutionary poet, and one of the most famous poets of the Urdu language from State of Pakistan. A rising figure and notable member of the Progressive Writers' Movement (PWM), Faiz was an avowed Marxist-communist, long associated member of Russian-backed Communist Party and was a recipient of Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union in 1962. Despite being repeatedly accused of atheism by the political and military establishment, Faiz's poetry suggested his complicated relationship with religion in general and Islam in particular. He was, nevertheless, inspired by South Asia's Sufi traditions.

Faiz was controversially named and linked by Prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan's government for hatching the conspiracy (see Rawalpindi conspiracy case) against Ali Khan's government, being Plot's central leader which was supported by left-wing military sponsor Major-General Akbar Khan. Having being arrested by Military police, Faiz among with others received a maximum sentence by JAG branch, although his sentence was commuted after the assassination Liaquat Ali Khan in 1951.

Biography

One of the foremost poets in the Indian sub-continent, Faiz Ahmed Faiz was born in Sialkot in Pakistan. He studied philosophy and English literature, but poetry and politics preoccupied him more than anything else. For writing poetry that always antagonizes the ruling Å―lite and challenges colonial and feudal values, like such rebellious writers as Ngugi of Kenya and Darwish of Palestine, Faiz had to go to jail repeatedly during both colonial and postcolonial times in Pakistan. Inspired by the Marxist ideology, Faiz's poetry exhibits a strong sense of commitment to lower-class people, yet it always maintains a unique beauty nourished by the long, rich tradition of Urdu literature. His love poems are as appealing as his political poems, and he is considered primarily responsible for shaping poetic diction in contemporary Urdu poetry. Which poems deal with love, and which ones with politics? What evidence is there that Faiz is a courageous poet? What is his attitude towards loneliness and death?

Awards

Faiz was the first Asian poet to be awarded the Lenin Peace Prize, the Soviet Union's equivalent to the Nobel Prize in 1963. He used traditional meters and rhythms to compose poetry that was a blend of Romanticism and realism. Before his death he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize.

16) MUJHSE PEHLI SI MOHABBAT MERE MEHBOOD NA MAANG

17) GULON MEIN RANG BHARE BAAD E NAUBAHAR CHALE

Gulon mein rang bhare, baad-e-naubahaar chale

Let the flowers be filled with colors, let the wind of early spring blows
Chale bhii aao ki gulshan kaa karobaar chale

Please do come now, so that the garden can resume it glories

Qaffas udaas hai yaro, sabaa se kuchh to kaho

My caged body is sad, say something to the breeze
Kahiin to bahr-e-Khudaa aaj zikr-e-yaar chale

For god sake let it not go empty, lets hear about friends

Kabhii to subh tere kunj-e-lab se ho aagaaz

Waking in the morning to the sweet sounds of your lips
Kabhii to shab sar-e-kaakul se mushkabaar chale

The evening we will rest taking the sweet scent of your hair

Baraa hai dard kaa rishtaa, ye dil Gariib sahii

Strong is the bond of pain although we are weak and poor
Tumhaare naam pe aayenge Gam_gusaar chale

When we hear your calls all of us will come together

Jo ham pe guzarii so guzarii magar shab-e-hijraan

Going through hell, this evening of separation will be over
Hamaare ashk terii aaqabat sanwaar chale

Our tears would have cleaned you for your next life

Huzoor-e-yaar huii daftar-e-junuun kii talab

We welcome them as friends, later their greed for power ruled
Girah mein leke garebaan kaa taar taar chale

They tied us and cut through us to bits and pieces

Maqaam 'Faiz' koii raah mein jachaa hii nahiin

O' Faiz, no place in my exile gives me pleasure
Jo kuu-e-yaar se nikale to suu-e-daar chale

After I left I found solace in the gallows of death.

One would think that Faiz’s poems seem to portray love and longing for the beloved but they do not. They talk about social and political issues. They talk about revolution!

With his Urdu infused with Arabic-Persian and poetry that wouldn't give the message directly, I'm not surprised that Faiz completely failed to inspire revolutionary thought among ordinary Pakistanis.

(Qaffas udaas hai yaro, saba say kuch to kaho)2
I am sad in my imprisonment (of love) come on breeze do something!!
Kaheen to behr-e-Khuda aaj zikr-e-yaar chalay
My lover's name is being uttered somewhere on god's earth, please bring it to me

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens

Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

(Jo hum pay guzri so guzri magar shab-e-hijraan)2
Irrespective of my suffering due to our separation, my life was thrown into darkenss
Humaray ashk teri aaqibat sanwaar chalay
I hope that my tears will enhance your future

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens

Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

(Maqaam 'Faiz' koi raah main jacha hee nahin)2
On my journey of love, Faiz, no rest stop appealed to me
Jo koo-e-yaar say niklay to soo-e-daar chalay
Because when I leave the street of my Beloved it will be towards death

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with your presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens

Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

Kabhi to subh teray kunj-e-lab say ho aaghaaz
I hope that someday my morning will begin with the sound of your voice
Kabhi to shab sar-e-kaakul say mushkbaar chalay
And the night is scented with your beautiful curly hair

Baraa hai dard ka rishta, yeh dil ghareeb sahee
My heart recognises that this relationship of love is indeed painful
Tumhaaray naam pay aaen gay Ghamgusaar chalay
The pain given by you, will earn me a visit from the sympathizers

Hooa jo teer-e-nazar neemkash to kya hasil
There is no point in loving someone the half hearted way
Maza to jab hai keh seenay kay aar paar chalay
Fun is when the arrow pierces the heart all the way

Chalay bhi aao keh gulshan ka karobaar chalay
Oh please grace us with our presence, so that the early Spring can finish decorating the gardens

Gulon main rang bharay, baad-e-naubahaar chalay
Filled with colourful flowers, the early Spring is on its way

Huzoor-e-yaar hui daftar-e-junooN ka talab
My beloved presence made the desires grow into an obsession
Giraah main lay kay garaybaan ka taar taar chalay
All that is left, my clothes (tatters) heart (broken and painful) that I take with me

18) YUN SAJAA CHAND KE JHALAKA TERE ANDAAZ KA RANG

Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
Yuun faza mahaki ke badala mere hamaraaz ka rang
The fragrance of the bloom spread, and my lover's color changed

Saayaa-e-chashm mein hairaan rukh-e-roshan ka jamaal

Under the eyes, the beauty of the blushing cheeks

Surkhi-e-lab mein pareshaan teri aawaaz ka rang

In the redness of your lips quivered the color of your voice

Be-piye huun ke agar lutf karo aakhir-e-shab
I have not drunk, but if it pleases you, at the end of the night
Shishaa-e-mai mein dhale subah ke aaghaaz ka rang
Let the color of the dawn blend in the goblet of wine

Chang-o-nerang pe the apne lahoo ke dum se
We were in rapture with the song in our hearts
Dil ne lay badli to madhaam hua har saaz ka rang
When the heart changed its beat, all the instruments got muted

Ek sukhan aur ke phir rang-e-takallum tera

I, a poet, and your way of speaking
Harf-e-sadah ko inayat kare aejaaz ka rang
It lends magic to even the simplest of sounds

19) BAHAR AAYEE TO JAISEY YAK BAAR LAUT AAYE HAIN PHIR ADUM SE

Bahar aayee
Spring has come
To jaisey yak baar laut aaye hain phir adum se
So have returned suddenly from the past
Woh khaab sarey, shabaab sarey
All those dreams, all that beauty
Jo terey honton pe mar mittey they
That on your lips had died
Jo mit ke har baar phir jiye they
That had died and lived again each time
Nikher gaye hain gulaaab sarey
All the roses are blooming
Jo teri yadon se mushkboo hain
That still smell of your memories
Jo terey ushaak ka lahoo hain
That are the blood of my love for you

Ubal parey hain azaab sarey
All the torments are raging again
Malaal-e-ihbay-e-doastaan bhi
That unheeded advice of friends
Tumharey aaghosh-e-mehvashaan bhi
That intoxication of your embrace
Ghubar-e-khatir ke baab sarey
The dust speckled old chapters
Tirey humarey sawaal sarey, jawaab sarey
With all our questions, all our answers
Bahaar aayee
Spring has come
To khul gaye hain
So have opened
Neye sirrey se hisaab sarey
All those journals of my love anew

Aaye kuchh abr kuchh sharaab aaye
us ke baad aaye jo azaab aaye .

Some clouds should come, and some wine should be served,

After that whatever difficulty comes, let it come.

Baam-e-miinaa se maahataab utare
Dast-e-saaqii me.n aaftaab aaye

Moonlight should fall upon me from high heavens above,

Bartender should come carrying fireworks(wine) in his hands.

Har rag-e-Khuun mein phir charaagaan ho,
Saamane phir wo benaqaab aaye

Every drop of blood in my veins should light up like a lamp,

And my beloved should come without her veil

Kar rahaa thaa Gam-e-jahaan kaa hisaab
Aaj tum yaad behisaab aaye

I was counting the times, pain has been inflicted on me,
And then, I remembered you countless times.

Is tarah apani Khamoshii goonji
Goyaa har simt se jawaab aaye

My silence echoed in such a fashion,
I'm getting replies from all the directions.

'Faiz' thi raah sar basar manzil

Wherever I reached, i returned victorious.

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

POET: FAIZ AHMED FAIZ:

Faiz Ahmed Faiz throughout his tumultuous life,  continually wrote and published, becoming the best-selling modern Urdu poet in both India and Pakistan. While his work is written in fairly strict diction, his poems maintain a casual, conversational tone, creating tension between the elite and the common, somewhat in the tradition of Ghalib, the reknowned 19th century Urdu poet. Faiz is especially celebrated for his poems in traditional Urdu forms, such as the ghazals, and his remarkable ability to expand the conventional thematic expectations to include political and social issues.

QATEEL SHIFAI:

Qateel Shifai was born on 24th December, 1919. His actual name is Aurangzeb Khan. Qateel Shifai is his nom de plume, the pen-name under which he is known in the world of Urdu poetry. "Qateel" is his "takhallus" and "Shifai" is in honour of his Ustaad Hakim Mohammed 'Shifa' whom he considered his mentor.

His father's death at an early age, forced Qateel to quit his education and start his own sporting goods shop. Success eluded him and he moved to Rawalpindi, where he worked at a transport company for a monthly salary of Rs.60. Finally in 1946, Nazir Ahmed called him to Lahore and made him the assistant editor of the monthly 'Adab-e-Latif'.

Qayeel Shifai's first ghazal was printed in the Lahore weekly 'Star', whose editor was Qamar Jalalabadi. In January 1947, a Lahore based film producer asked Qateel to pen the songs for his forthcoming film. His first film as a lyricist was "Teri Yaad". Since then he has won numerous awards as a lyricist. He has had quite a few of his poem collections published, one of which being "Mutriba" which was awarded the highest literature award in Pakistan.

Qateel's primary contribution to Urdu poetry has been to raise the standards of ghazals in films. Though this work was started by Tanvir Alvi and Sahir Ludhianvi,it has been brought to its natural conclusion by Qateel Shifai. His work brought a certain standard to ghazals in films and gave it a certain respectability. His work also brought Urdu poetry closer to the masses by using simple words, quite often words taken from Hindi.

Qateel Shifai has also been known for his collaborations with Jagjit and Chitra Singh on numerous ghazal albums.

Dard se mera daaman bharde, ya allah

Fill my heart with pain, O Allah
Phir chahe deewana karde, ya allah

Then if you wish, turn me into a madman, O Allah

Maine tujh se chand sitare kab mange,

When did I ask for the moon and stars
Roushan dil, bedaar nazar de, ya allah
Make my heart enlightened and my eyes awakened, O Allah

Suraj si ek cheez to hum sab dekh chuke,

Milkar juda huey tho na soya karenge hum

Since we have met and seperated, we will not sleep hereafter

Ek doosre ke yaad mein roya karenge hum

In each others remembrance, we will keep crying hereafter

Aansoo chalak chalak ke sathaayenge raath bhar

Our flowing tears will keep disturbing us all night long

Moti palak palak meim piroyaa karenge hum
On each eyelash, we will string pearls/tear drops
Jab dooriyon ki yaad dilon ko jalaayegi

When thoughts, of the distance between us, will burn our hearts

Jismon ko chaandni mein bhigoya karenge hum
We will immerse/wet our bodies in the moonlight
Gar de gaya daga hamein toofan bhi 'qateel'

If the storm also deceives us 'Qateel'

In a lifetime, everyone loves someone
Main tau mar kar bhii merii jaan tujhe chaahuungaa

I have kept you in my heart like a heartbeat
Main tasavvur bhii judaa'ii kaa bhalaa kaise karuun
How can I imagine, to be separated from you
Main ne qismat kii lakiiron se churaayaa hai tujhe
I have stole you for myself from the fate
Pyaar kaa ban ke nigehbaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will be the caretaker for your love, so much I love you

Terii har chaap se jalte hain khayaalon mein chiraag
The sounds of your footsteps light up my thoughts
Jab bhii tuu aaye jagaataa hu'aa jaaduu aaye
Whenever you appear, it is like live magic
Tujhko chhuu luun to phir ai jaan-e-tamannaa mujhko
If I touch you, my love
Der tak apne badan se terii Khushbuu aaye
Your fragrance eminates from my body for a long time
Tuu bahaaron kaa hai unvaan tujhe chaahuungaa
You are the one that tha Spring talks about, so much I love you

I will love you even when I am dead

Tuu milaa hai to ye ehsaas hu'aa hai mujhko
Ever since I have met you, I felt that
Ye merii umr muhabbat ke liye thorii hai
This life is too short for love (expressing love to you)
Ek zaraa saa Gham-e-dauraan kaa bhii haq hai jis par
The sorrows of the world for which one should spare a thought/breath
Main ne vo saans bhii tere liye rakh chhorii hai
Even that last breath, I have devoted to you
Tujh pe ho jaauungaa qurbaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will die for you, so much I love you

24) APNAY HOTHON PAR SAJAANA CHAHTA HOON

Apnay hothon par sajaana chahta hoon,

I want to talk about you all the time,
Aa tujhay main gungunana chahta hoon
I want to sing and hum your name all the time

Koi aansoo tery daaman par gira gar,

If ever any tear fell on your lap,

Boond ko moti banana chahta hoon
I want to transform every drop into a pearl

Thak gaya main kartay kartay yaad tujko,

I have literally gotten tired of remembering you,
Ab tujhay main yaad aana chahta hoon
Now I want you to remember me

Cha raha hai saari basti mein andhera,

It is getting dark all over the town
Roshni ko ghar jalana chahta hoon
I want to put my house on fire, just for lighting

Aakhri hichki teray zaano pay aayey,

I wish to leave this world whils't sleeping in your lap
Maut bhi main shayraana chahta hoon
I even want my death to be poetic

25) KIYA HAI PYAR JISE HUMNE ZINDAGI KI TARHA

Kiya hai pyar jise hamne zindagi ki tarah

Someone whom I loved very much, like my own life
Vo aashanaa bhii milaa hamase ajanabii kii tarah

That acquaintance too met me like a stranger

Baraa ke pyaas meri us ne haath chhor diya

As my thirst grew,  my hand was  abandoned
Vo kar raha tha muravat bhi dillagi ki tarah

That politeness gives the false notion of love

Kise khabar thi baregi kuchh aur tariki

He who knew the darkness will grow
Chhupega vo kisi badali mein chaandani ki tarah

He too will hide in a cloud like the moonlight

Kabhi na socha tha hamne "Qateel" us ke liye

Never did I  think to thank Qateel for him
Karega ham pe sitam vo bhi har kisi ki tarah

He too will torment me like everyone else

Sitam To Ye Hai Ke Vo Bhi Na Ban Saka Apana

It is a grief that he too could not be mine
Kubuul Hamne Liye Jis Ke Gam Khushi Ke Tarah

And I accepted that agony like pleasure

25) KIYA HAI PYAR JISE HUMNE ZINDAGI KI TARHA

This one, in as much that it is a wonderful poem, one would have thought that the translations would have been all over the internet....but alas no, seems as if

no one wants to meddle in the love life of Jagjit and Chitra Singh.

This effort may be the first time that translations is attempted for Kiya hai Pyar Jise, took me a long sleepless night, burning up the hindi/english dictionary but

eventually we do have something which I can vouch for as not the best but reasonable in the sense that it is the first time it is floating on the worldwide net.
