This is true Sheik and it started in the 60s when the rice cultivation schemes were developed at Black Bush Polder and Tapacuma, Essequibo,  in isolation from the rest of the population.

This was done with all good intentions by the present government.

In the old days our parents were satisfied with socializing at the occasional wedding and funeral, but as the new generation of youth  become more influenced by the western world through television, Guyanese travels and overseas visitors to Guyana, the local youth  have  difficulty find adequate resources to recreate  and they  became depressed.

Many dropped out of school, joined gangs and got involved in substance abuse. Girls get pregnant at 14 and macho guys treat them with disrespect. The girls tolerated, because they  need a boy friend to impress other girls.

I lived in Canada for over 45 years in a reasonable neutral society [shit I am as old as Gil] and this attitude is foreign to me.

But fortunately we implemented a successful youth suicide prevention program in our Canadian  town in 1985, that was also successful in Guyana. Until a greedy influential AH derailed our work in Berbice.

A report is being drafted to restart the program and hopefully this official will be held accountable by the new government.
