TODAY is Nomination Day. Political parties contesting the 2011 regional and general elections will make their way down to City Hall in Georgetown to present their lists of candidates to Chief Elections Officer, Gocool Boodhoo. The doors of City Hall will be open for this exercise between 14:00 hrs and 18:00 hrs. Contesting political parties usually employ much fanfare in making their way to the venue to present their lists of candidates.

According to the Guyana Elections Commission, some 32 political parties have expressed interest in contesting the elections, but the final number of parties contesting will be determined by the close of Nomination Day today.

Dr Steve Surujbally, the GECOM Chairman, opined that the initial number of contesting parties would dwindle to 10 or 11.

Some of the contesting parties are the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C); A Partnership for National Unity (APNU); the Alliance For Change (AFC); Vision Guyana; the Unity Party; The United Force (TUF); the Fundamental Structure Group; and the Guyana Muslim Party.

GECOM has posted on its website all of the forms associated with submission of list of candidates by political parties contesting the upcoming general and regional elections, as well as an advisory to guide those political parties

Important day

PPP/C Campaign Spokesman, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, in an invited comment, said today is an important day since Guyana will be introduced to the party’s leadership team.

He said: “This is the team that we give to Guyana to take us along the path of modernization, transformation and unity.”

Persaud said the party’s lists are ready for submission to the chief elections officer, and both the leadership team and supporters will make their way, at 12:30 hrs, from Freedom House on Robb Street to City Hall.

Alliance For Change presidential candidate Khemraj Ramjattan told the Guyana Chronicle that that party is well prepared for today.

“We are ready for Nomination Day, and our list of candidates will be made public after we make our submission at City Hall … (today),” he said.

Unfortunately, no senior official from APNU was available for comment, but the general consensus among the major political players is one of readiness.
