I didn’t work with Sridevi until 1984, when we first starred in Nagina. Initially, I thought she was a very shy person and arrogant, as she didn’t talk much. Later, I realised it was not arrogance but just that she was not comfortable speaking in English or Hindi, because they were not her main languages.

One of my very first conversations happened with her during a rather awkward moment. We were shooting and the camera’s film magazine ran out. While the crew was changing the magazine, the bright lights were still on for about three minutes and we stood in that position with the whole unit around us. I told her, “Sridevi, you danced very well.” She smiled and said, “thank you”. She then added that she saw Khel Khel Mein four times. That was very sweet of her. Those were the first words I heard from her during the making of Nagina.

Thereafter, the kind of confidence and star status she earned, she became a superhero. She was a complete actor, a fabulous dancer and a person who could just switch faces. She could be quiet and be in her own mood, and then suddenly do a great comic scenes or tragic one. She had that rare ability in her.

After the great success of Nagina, and she had also done Mr. India (1987), we got to work together in Yash Chopra’s film, Chandni (1989). By then, Sridevi had become very popular and was at the peak of her career. During Chandni, we became friendlier and got along well.

I often noticed that after every two, or may be three shots; she would remove her makeup, and do it again. I never understood the reason, but I think she always wanted to give her best, let her work to speak and also, look gorgeous. And it was not a mere touch-up, but removing makeup from her nose and cheeks and t

Sridevi - A profile

Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayappan in southern Tamil Nadu state on August 13, 1963, Sridevi made her acting debut when she was only four, and went on to have a career spanning over four decades.

She worked in India's regional Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam language films before entering Bollywood.

Although she made her Bollywood debut in 1979, Sridevi was able to make a name for herself in the 80's after appearing in a string of blockbuster films including "Chandni", "Mr India", "Mawali" and "Tohfa".

The actor made it big in Indian movies after her 1982 Tamil film "Moondram Pirai", playing the same role in its Hindi remake, "Sadma".

Her portrayal of a woman suffering from amnesia has been described by many critics as "a milestone in her illustrious career".

She was awarded the Padma Shri, India´s fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the film industry.

She was especially admired for her ability to overcome language barriers and for working in different regional film industries.

Sridevi appeared in around 300 films and was set to see her older daughter Jhanvi make her Bollywood debut soon.

After marrying producer Boney Kapoor, Sridevi paused her career for several years - her last film before the hiatus was "Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin" with Akshay Kumar, which was filmed in 1994 but hit the big screens later in 2004. As per NDTV report, 1997's "Judaai" was her last acting job before she made a comeback in 2012 with highly acclaimed film "English Vinglish."

Sridevi had been working steadily ever since, appearing in Tamil film "Puli" and last year's "MOM" where she starred alongside Pakistani actors Sajal Aly and Adnan Siddiqui. She will also be seen posthumously in a special appearance this year in Shah Rukh Khan's film Zero.

Why are you cursing on a thread for Sri Devi?

Have you no respect for the dead?

Chief

To all of you, when a person time is reach for God to call upon them, it is time. It sometimes unexplainable when someone as young a Sri Devi untimely death can affect so many. I personally wasn't moved by her death because I am not her maker, though I still give my condolences. I care more about the poor and unfortunate citizens of India. Shri Devi as a famous person has not done what Mother Thresa has done for the poor and sick that the rich and famous are scorned to touch. This is where my priority comes in. Everyone serves their own purpose and I serve mine.

You should not be so judgmental. How do you know she or the stars don’t do a lot for the poor?  Many are involved in working with the poor. Do not assume things.  You will not like If it’s done to you!

If they have done so, I haven't seen or heard about it. My position remains the same. If I discover facts to this regard, I will be the first to offer my apology. However, I did offer my condolences.

Perhaps, they do it without bragging. BTW, there is no such thing as "untimely death". Bhagwaan has other purposes for her.

Well, I’ve seen the schools and sanctuaries set up and funded by the likes of Amitabh Bachman, Sharuk Khan and others.  Indian celebrities are involved in charitable ventures but more could do more.  However, I would not judge any individual.
