Chief,

I want to wish you all the best on this holy trip. I watched a documentary and everyone who attended experienced a life changing moment for them.

We look forward to seeing Haji Chief upon your safe return.

You will be added to the the list of another Haji from Corriverton, Kudos.

My very best wishes to you, Chief ! I hope that you will have a safe and happy journey to and from the Holy Land ! Please note, however,  that after completing the pilgrimage and returning home, you should not allow anyone to call or refer to you as 'Haji'. Guyanese and Trinidadians are in the habit of attaching this title as an accolade. Note , however, that after completing Hajj your pilgrimage ends so you will revert to being an ordinary and humble servant of Allah and should therefore politely ask others not to address you as Haji.

Hajji

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hajji (sometimes spelled Hadji, Haji, Alhaji, Al hage, Al hag or El-Hajj) is a title which is originally given to a Muslim person who has successfully completed the Hajj to Mecca.[1] It is also often used to refer to an elder, since it can take time to accumulate the wealth to fund the travel, and in many Muslim societies as an honorific title for a respected man. The title is placed before a person's name; for example Joshua Omo becomes Hajji Joshua Omo.

"HadÅūi" is also used in Christian Orthodox religion for people who go on pilgrimage to the grave of Christ in Jerusalem. It can be then added to the surname for men (e.g. HadÅūi-Petrović) or before the first name for women (HadÅūika).

Hajji is derived from the Arabic áļĨājj, which is the active participle of the verb áļĨajja ("to make the pilgrimage"). The alternative form áļĨajjÄŦ is derived from the name of the Hajj with the adjectival suffix -ÄŦ, and this was the form adopted by non-Arabic languages. In some areas the title has become a family name, for example in the Bosniaksurname HadÅūiosmanović ("son of Hajji Osman").

In other languages[edit]

Arabic: حا؎‎‎ ÄĶājj or ØØŽŲ‘ŲŠ ÄĶajjÄŦ; Egyptian Arabic: ØØŽŲ‘/áļĪagg‎‎, pronounced [ħÃĶÉĄ]; Persian: حا؎ی HÃĒji/Hāji or حا؎ HÃĒj/Hāj; Pashto: حا؎ی, Hāji; Greek: Î§ÎąÏ„ÎķÎŪς; Albanian: Haxhi,; Bulgarian: ÐĨаÐīÐķÐļŅ, HadÅūija, حا؎Ų‰ŲŠØ§; Macedonian: ÐĨаŅŸÐļŅ˜Ð°, HadÅūija; Bosnian: HadÅūija/ÐĨаŅŸÐļŅ˜Ð°, حا؎Ų‰ŲŠØ§; Belarusian: ÐĨаÐīÐķŅ‹, ChadÅūy, ØŪا؎Ų; Kurdish: HecÃŪ‎, ŌšÓ™Ņ‰Ðļ, ÚūÛ•ØŽÛŒ; Serbian: ÐĨаŅŸÐļ/HadÅūi; Bengali: āĶ†āĶēāĶđāĶūāĶœā§āĶŽ Alhajj or Bengali: āĶđāĶūāĶœā§€ HajjÄŦ; Azerbaijani and Turkish: HacÄą; Hausa: Alhaji. All mean "pilgrim".

Women who complete the Hajj are referred to as Hajjah or حا؎ØĐ áļĨājjah,[2] Egyptian Arabic: áļĪagga‎‎, [ˈħÃĶÉĄÉĄÃĶ]; Hausa/Fulani: Hajia or in Yoruba: Alhaja.

Use[edit]

In Arab countries, áļĨājj and áļĨājjah (pronunciation varies according to the form of Arabic spoken) is a commonly used manner of addressing any older person respectfully, regardless of whether or not the person in question has actually performed the pilgrimage.

The term is also used in the Balkan Christian countries that were once under Ottoman rule (Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Montenegro, Macedonia and Romania) for a Christian who had traveled to Jerusalem and the Holy Lands.[3]

In Cyprus the title became so prevalent as to be permanently integrated into some Greek Christian family names, such as Hajiioannou. This was due to Cyprus being so close to the Holy Lands and Jerusalem, as Cyprus became a place where Christians and Muslims intermixed freely for many centuries.

In Iran the honorific title Haj (حا؎) is sometimes used for IRGC commanders, instead of the title Sardar ("General").

Yuji, many thanks for your post above. The point I was making to Chief centers on the Islamic doctrine of humility. I am sure that most, if not all of us, are well aware of the 'air' that we have seen adopted by some folks (Muslims, Hindus and Christians) who performed specific religious rites and rituals; particularly after those rituals were completed far away from home. The performance of Hajj, however, carries no entitlement to any recognition or title whatsoever. Hajj is listed as the last of the 5 pillars of Islam and this is, in the view of most Muslims, indicative if its significance; i.e it is to be performed only IF an individual can afford the costs which have to be borne in travelling to and from his/her home to Mecca. I know there are some who, on return home, insist on being addressed as 'Haji'; this, however, is simply indicative of ego. Local practices vary from country as stated by Wikipedia, however, nothing in Islam grants any title to anyone who is performing or has performed Hajj.

If my memory serves me well, the Chief has performed hajj before and I don't remember him seeking to be addressed as haji so I doubt he will do so now. The Chief is a lot more humble and mainstream than he gets credit for. That said, may Allah make the hajj fulfilling for the Chief as well as all others performing the hajj.

Hehe...going to Hajj and then back to cussing women on GNI how they have STD's.  Hypocrite!!!!

The affluent  can afford  to go once a year to cleanse their sinful soul. Does that make them any better??

For them, it does make them better.  A person goes to religious retreat, not for anyone else, but  for them self.

Only people who don't sin,  don't have to go to Hajj or religious retreat.

Keffer your original religion is in your Dna. You cannot kill it no matter how much you try to adopt the identity of others. It is like a dormant fire. It is truly your own. No one can accuse you of just being originally just converted people. It is time for you to adopt the identity of your Indo Aryan and Dravidian ancestors by going back to your roots.

What an ass you are; stop writing rubbish; you have no concept or understanding whatsoever of DNA ! Stick to cleaning toilets because that most certainly is in your DNA. Jackass, there is no such thing like a 'dormant fire' !

So far in this thread I have observed a few things:

[1] Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of Islam that Muslims who have the material means must undertake; now I learn that Chief accomplished Hajj once before. So, why is Chief spending so much money to undertake another Hajj? Why doesn't he donate that money to charity, another of the 5 pillars of Islam? Or donate it to the mosque he is helping to build in NY? He would get more blessings by giving to the poor and his mosque, I think.

[2] Prashad is urging Chief to return to the Dravidian-Hindu religion of his pre-Islamic ancestors in India. Why should Chief do that when he is a wholehearted believer in the Islamic faith?

[3] Alena06 makes the point that it's hypocritical of Chief to do the Hajj while cussing women on GNI. I recommend that Alena06 read up more on the social situation women confront in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia etc. Being a Muslim does not shield a woman from a public flogging or amputation of her arms and other atrocities by men who returned from Hajj. So, Alena06 should not be shocked by Chief's cussing of women here.

All the same, Chief is already in the midst of Hajj and I wish him a safe journey back home in NY. Sincerely yours.

Gill, you will not find Chief and Keffer ancestors in the Holly Quran but you will find them in the Bhagavad Gita.  Some of them probably took part in the epic battles that took place on the plains of India.

Gilly, Maybe the Chief enjoys going to the holy land similar to how other people may enjoy going to Paris, New York, London, etc. And for all you know, the Chief is also fulfilling the other needs you mentioned above.

Prash, I am totally for Freedom of Conscience and Freedom of Worship. Putting ancestors or present family aside, an individual has a right to worship within any religion freely and no other person has a right to question that individual's creed.

Bai, we Guyanese are descendants of the Dalit population. There is no chance our ancestors fought in the epic Mahabharata battles.
