GEORGETOWN: A reliable source close to the PPP strongman Bharat Jagdeo, last evening disclosed mounting tensions between the former and current Leader of the PPP government, president Donald Ramotar, over strategy that would determine the strength of PPP supporters in traditional People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) strongholds.

According to the inside sources, Jagdeo is suspicious that the PPP support base in many areas are disappearing, and has urged Ramotar to step up the packing of buses and trucks of PPP supporters from Georgetown and other places to build up crowds at PPP rallies.

“In order to determine the true strength of PPP support in various communities Jagdeo is questioning Ramotar's contribution to the party, to justify the distribution of Parliamentary seats that will eventually be allocated to the faithful,” according to the source who requested anonymity for fear of victimization.

It was noted that the Alliance for Change -AFC made inroads at Whim and Bath Settlement last election after Moses Nagamootoo had promised a 20% increase to sugar workers. This resulted in the PPP/C having a minority government.

“But Bharat Jagdeo seem convinced that most of that electorate have not returned their support to the PPP,” the source disclosed.

Jagdeo, according to the source, felt it was necessary to gauge his party’s strength in the traditional PPP stronghold due to growing support shown to the AFC and APNU in recent times.

“Jagdeo is also fearful of losing support to Mark Benschop’s group in South Georgetown and in Linden…. Party Leader, Donald Ramotar is adamant that he could not afford to risk low turn-outs at those rallies because this election is all about public perception, and he noted that APNU and the AFC have been attracting thousands of loyal supporters to their rallies…Although Ramotar admits that he seem unlikely to deliver a guarantee of of the Indian votes he promised as part of the pre-election salary and pension inscreases, he is fearful that this fact be known publicly.”

General and Regional elections are scheduled for Monday, May 11. In addition at least four other general elections are scheduled to be held in the 15-nation Caribbean trade bloc this year.

Jagdeo, whose links to players in the underworld is known to have attracted more than passing interest from federal agencies in the US, is well aware of possible dire consequences of a defeat by the PPP as he and others in his close political and business circle could well end up before local and even international courts for alleged wrongdoing.

Additionally, Leaders of the A Partnership For National Unity-Alliance For Change Team Unity Coalition have promised to investigate,... review and cancel a string of questionable business deals and state contracts handed out contemptuously to friends and relatives of Jagdeo and other big wigs during his tenure and in the succeeding years under his close political buddy and surrogate Ramotar. ...

And just recently, it came out in public that authorities quietly handed a firm with close links to the president’s eldest son a multi-million dollar contract to fix and run a fiber optic cable 350 miles from the border with Brazil to the city even though his first attempt at doing so ended in disaster with government being forced to abandon it because of embarrassing engineering mistakes.

... David Granger said he was confident that supporters possess the necessary characteristics to ensure smooth and peaceful pre- and post-elections.

He said his position was grounded in the fact that for three months protests were held outside the Office of the President without incident.

He also pointed to the killing of activist Courtney Crum-Ewing and said that while there was outrage at the wanton execution the coalition ensured that there was restraint among its supporte...rs.

“We feel our supporters are capable and willing to behave in an orderly fashion,” he stated.

Nonetheless,

Granger believes

Guyana’s post-election atmosphere

will be one of jubilation,

reflecting the celebrations

of a coalition win.

So confident is he,

that he predicts the coalition

will gain an average of about

58% to 62% of the overall votes.

Once APNU AFC wins they don't care whether Moses delivers or not.   That only becomes an issue if APNU gets their people out (which they will) but they lose because Moses didn't deliver.

If APNU AFC wins there are too many reasons why they will not renege on the AFC.  They want to demolish the PPP in local gov't elections and will need the AFC's help to do so.  Plus having intelligent people like Nigel Hughes available will be of use.  I get the sense that APNU is filled with ageing folks.

“I have been in all ten regions and the Diaspora

and security is the major issue.

People from the Diaspora

don’t want to come back home

because they feel so unsafe and

with what I am capable of doing,

I am the better choice to be President

said the APNU+AFC Presidential Candidate.

He said too that

Guyana has a “broken education system”

which needs urgent attention.

Granger asserted

that the matter of the nation’s development

ca...nnot be properly addressed

without taking a practical approach

to dealing with the hundreds of students

failing the National Grade Six Assessments every year.

“There are problems in the education system

and they are not being rectified.

This administration is bent on glorifying

the 170 top students

but no one pays attention

to the 17, 000 who don’t do well…

Guyana is behind and we need to solve that,” he added.

the PPP/C has been unable to rectify —

the lack of jobs for young people.

That is not quite true. The PPP has introduced measures to make it easier for young people to find a job as a bandit. Guns are now cheaper, and the PPP has encouraged Guyanese abroad to come back so that they can get robbed or even killed by these bandits. It is one of the fastest growing sector, attracting employment in even the poorest areas of the country. For those that succeed, a property in Pradoville is the ultimate sign of a successful crime boss.

The Cabinet of Government Ministers last month

blessed contracts for the procurement of drugs

worth some US$12.8 million (G$2,677,864,510).

The contracts were awarded to New GPC,

a company controlled by Dr. Ranjisinghi (Bobby) Ramroop,

a friend with business connections

to former President Bharrat Jagdeo.

Three Cabinet Minutes have been leaked

and reproduced in the electronic media.

The Minutes of the Cabinet meeting approving

the most expensive contract for $6,730,526

dated April 23, 2015

was signed by Dr. Roger Luncheon

in his capacity as Secretary to the Cabinet

and Head of the Presidential Secretariat.

Drug purchases for the past several years

have been done on the sole sourcing principle,

rather than the more competitive tender process

required under the Procurement Commission Act.
