Governor of the State of Roraima, JosΓ© de Anchieta Junior addressing Region Nine residents at the PPP/C public meeting in Lethem.Flood-affected residents in Lethem on Sunday began receiving cash flood-relief, shortly after the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) held its rally in the township near the border with Brazil.

Hundreds persons received GUY$20,000 each at the PPPC's regional headquarters. Back in June, government had allocated a minimum of GUY$50 million to cushion the impact of a massive flood that was caused by torrential rain and overflowing rivers in the Rupununi and neighbouring Brazil.
Officials of the Women of Worth programme being managed by the Ministry of Human Services are Monday expected to meet with single-parent mothers.

The PPPC election campaign rally, which was inside the party’s regional headquarters compound, was addressed by several senior politicians and the Governor of the Brazilian State of Roraima, JosΓ© de Anchieta Junior. Party officials estimated that 4,000 persons attended while police sources put the figure at just about 1,500.

The state-owned Government Information Agency (GINA) quoted the Governor as lauding the leadership of outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo and hoping that the friendly relations between the two neighbouring countries would continue under the new administration. He and Jagdeo also discussed several projects that would benefit the two neighbouring South American countries.

The contingent of PPP supporters on the march in LethemPPPC presidential candidate, Donald Ramotar, in his address to attendees, accused the opposition of practicing politics of deception. He noted that A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) were promising to reduce taxes, pay bigger salaries and provide everything else people need while saying they would cut government revenue.

Those parties have promised to reduce the 16 percent Value Added Tax- a major revenue generator-, reduce extravagance, eliminate corruption and slash the number of government ministries.

President Jagdeo noted that Ramotar spent his entire life working with PPP during the difficult days to return freedom and democracy to Guyana.

He also credited Ramotar with promoting equality of all Guyanese and making significant contributions to the policies that the government has embarked on since winning office in 1992.

Ramotar was appointed Political Advisor to the President, in the wake of opposition concerns that he was piggybacking on state funds to travel around Guyana and on official overseas visits in the run-up to his selection as presidential candidate.
