Coalition Govt responsible for hikes in Berbice Bridge tolls – PPP

…did not follow financial model that guaranteed minimal increases
…as Govt opposed increase; to review legal options

While the Government is digging its heels in when it comes to impending increases in tolls to use the Berbice Bridge, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has weighed in on the saga by calling the Government out for precipitating the toll increases.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo

According to the Party on Tuesday, a formula for minor increases was supposed to be in place – increases that would have lessened the impact on commuters. Instead, however, the Party noted that Government abandoned this formula and even tinkered with it.
“Had the Coalition Government pursued the financial model used by the former People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration, there would have been no proposed increases of this magnitude. The Bridge was built around a financial model that did not envisage such massive increases in tolls.

So these "MINOR" Increases would have reached GY$8000+ this year.

They the PPP build a bridge with No pedestrian walkway . Bycycles ar not allowed, the ferry and speedboat cannot operate. ONLY vehicles can cross witha very expensive toll to cross.

Government should bring the ferries back. Advise the local minibus operators to divide themselves into 2 groups. One taking passengers to the ferry and the other transporting them on the other side. Minibus operators operating on the other side of the bridge cross once and cross back at the end of the day.

Excellent Idea. The problem is having politicians to implement it.

They can't introduce ferries, there is a clause in the Bridge contract that barred such.

Good move for Private Passenger boat service, like they have between GT and Vreed-en-hoop.

From what I'm seeing here is the government is shirking its responsibility of protecting consumers from predatory practices and placing the blame on its political rivals. This is bad politics on the part of government.  A government cannot sit back idly and watch a business-monopoly carve out flesh from people to improve its bottom line.  Jagdeo's take on the issue is that the PPP government was making small increases over time which would have kept the company solvent and avoid a sudden and massive increase in tolls.  The APNU government made a cut to please its supporters and this has backfired because of a loss in revenue. The company is now forced to increase tolls to high levels to stay afloat.

Somebody is erring here by making foolish business decisions.

You think like a contraband dealer from the Burnham era.  Sounds enticing but it only enriches a few at the expense of a great many.

If this is the case why isn't the company furnishing proof?

Let's call on the government to demand such disclosure.  The public interest is at stake here and the public has a right to demand this company come straight and clean.

That's why the GOG needs to take over the bridge. BJ and his cronies sign the contract Guaranteeing 12% profits. If the bridge is not making any money then the BRB should take up the GOG offer to buy it.

BTW the bridge was not losing money with the reduces tolls that reduction is being subsidized by the GOG

I agree something has to be done about the tolls, but I don't think we should lose faith in private ventures and throw our business operations into the hands of government.  We did this in the seventies and we all know how dire things became with government ran business.  There is a better way  than a government take over.

No ferry service.

Me thinks that Bridge is a too costly venture, you have to factor in traffic to recuperate investment. There were warnings about that venture.

Is there anything the Rat had in vision is practicable, the man is a con.

This is bad politics on the part of government.  A government cannot sit back idly and watch a business-monopoly carve out flesh from people to improve its bottom line.

IGUANA seh:And who is dis "business monopoly" carving out flesh dat yuh want Granger guh after? Burnham? black man? Skeldon Man alien ancestors? Banna, stop being a CLOWN! The predatory BBC is Rat man cronies, yuh OWN people dem. But you want to exempt categorizing them as "political rivals" and guy after some jumbie dat yuh kyan mek up.

IGUANA seh: Wait, Berbicians are APNU supporters? Banna, what faat yuh talking? The tolls were cut because they were too high from inception. Berbicians were getting squeezed. No political motive, Berbicians not going to vote APNU.

The "foolish business decisions" were made by de russian trained "con o mist" who constructed an unsustainable model which would ROB Berbicians and full de BBC pocket!

Ramgoat, see above in bold red. Couldn't help deconstructing the pathetic bull you posted.

All de screamers hay who seh "black man kyant run cake shop" rememba dat Burnham give alyuh de bam bam bridge wid no teefing and no huge toll. Yuh rolling ova it for over 40 years now.

Note that their is possibly no suitable ferry and they claim that the stellings are in dangerous shape.  Blame the PPP as they were told to maintain the ferries but greed kicked in so they prevented the use of this alternate to the bridge.

I wonder who is in government today.  Looks like Jagdeo stuck in alyuh craw. The PNC is in charge of infrastructure  and general transportation  or they purposely neglecting Berbice.

So why is Burnham, who died 35 years ago, to blame for every problem that the PPP screams that it cannot fix.

The Berbice Bridge is a Jagdeo creation.  He needs to just admit his "error" and stop blaming the existing gov't.  Many were quite vocal about the bridge and claimed that it wasn't sustainable.  So now the chickens have come home to roots you scream that the PPP doesn't have anything to do with this.

And who is responsible for these predatory practices?  Put the blame where it lies. At the feet of Jagdeo.  The Coalition was not in power nor did the put in place a contract to protect these kleptomaniacs who now want to fleece off the impoverished public.

You should be telling Jagdeo to leave the PPP and go somewhere to count his ill gotten gains, because daily we see manifestations of his greed and incompetence.

The gov't needs to allow the private owners to write off this investment, make NIS whole (they were forced by Jagdeo to invest) and then they can take over the bridge.  If they cannot run it then they can outsource to private entities who can.  These entities can be paid a management fee for their services.

When this scam was concocted many pointed out that the financial structure was unsustainable and that it was a quick $$$ scheme by politically connected kleptomaniacs.  These clowns weren't allowed to raise fees to allow their returns and for debt service, so now this is an issue.

When people get into bad ventures they should be made to lose their investment.
