Buxton United jumped ahead of East Coast counterpart Victoria Kings with a solid 4-0 win over Monedderlust in the lone match on the penultimate night of Season 2 of the Stag Elite League which was contested last evening at the Tucville ground.
In registering their fourth win of the league, Buxton strengthened their position to end in the top three position with all six teams set to play their final match on Sunday when a triple header would be played at the GDF ground, Camp Ayangana.
The first half did not produce any goals in a match that saw end to end action for most of the opening 45 minutes, neither team relented in their offensive intentions but it was the Buxton boys who muffed the chances that came their way.
Monedderlust, desperately in search of their second win in season 2 looked sharp and matched the Buxtonians but as the match matured, it was the East Coast boys who found the back of the nets to set themselves apart.
The opening goal would come from a well executed free kick off the boot of Denver Dennis in the 56th minute. Aiming from 32 yards out, Dennis, one of the better free kick takers, made the opportunity count and he was assisted by poor judgment on the part of Monedderlust’s custodian, Selwin Jack who rather than advancing to the ball waited on it but it bounced over his head into the back of the nets.
It was the opening that Buxton were searching for all night, the flood gates were opened thereafter. Dillon Wright added his name to the score sheet in the 63rd minute showing great awareness as a Monedderlust defender was lethargic in clearing the ball which the alert Wright eventually stole and tapped into the nets to double the lead.
On 78 minutes, the score was further increased with Paul Kingston’s goal, while the icing was put on the cake when William Europe hammered home his effort in the 84th minute to seal a good win for the Buxtonians, 4-0.
It was Monedderlust’s eight loss in nine matches and they remain at the bottom of the table going into Sunday’s final match day at the GDF ground where the home team, already winning the SEL will come up against second placed Fruta Conquerors.
The main supporting match pits Topp XX against Buxton with opening rivalry at 16:00hrs between Victoria Kings and Monedderlust.
