Despite being shot in both legs, Delroy Brown, who was detained last Thursday after he and an accomplice were caught with two unlicenced guns, managed to make good his escape from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation early yesterday.
The 21-year-old Waterloo Street, Georgetown resident darted to his freedom around 5:30 hrs by picking the handcuffs that the police had used to chain his left hand to the bed.

Brown was under police guard when he escaped from the hospital. However, Kaieteur News was told that the cop had left the detainee on the bed and he was involved in a lengthy conversation on his cellular phone.
“This man (Brown) was shot in both legs and he was handcuffed too. Who would think that he would pick the handcuffs? I seriously don’t think it is the police fault,” a hospital source said. The police man who was on duty is currently under close arrest.
In a press release, police said that around 23:15 hrs last Thursday, ranks of a police mobile patrol stopped and searched Brown and his accomplice, David Bernard, on a motor cycle at Plum Park, Sophia and found an unlicenced 9mm. pistol and one round with a .38 revolver with six rounds.
Brown was shot after he tried to wrestle with one of the four lawmen.
During an interview with Brown last Friday, he said that he and his friend, whose name he claimed he could not remember at that time, were heading to a party in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD) when the police stopped them.
“The police went hiding in the bush and they come out and start searching us and then they search the bush and find a gun and they say it belongs to us but I don’t know about that. They search again and find another gun and then they started harassing me,” Brown had told Kaieteur News.
When Kaieteur News contacted his sister, Stacy Brown yesterday she said that she received a telephone call from someone early yesterday, informing her that the 21-year-old had escaped.
“I don’t know where he is. This morning (yesterday) the police come and ask me if I know about his location and I said no,” Stacy Brown stressed. She is of the opinion that her brother escaped from the hospital because he is afraid that the police would charge him “wrongfully”.
Meanwhile, a hospital source explained that Brown escaped when the place was dark.
“Where his room was, the nurses couldn’t see. So he exited his room, walk to the theatre, then straight to the Intensive Care Unit and out the gate. Nobody would recognize him at the front because there are persons who would traverse the Emergency Unit often,” the hospital source explained.
The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Michael Khan had expressed concerns over prisoners being admitted to the ward without the knowledge of the administration.
He had suggested that the police should inform all the relevant authorities at the hospital so that everyone will be on the lookout. “The police should inform, everyone even our security guards so that they too can assist the police,” Khan had told this newspaper.
Meanwhile, Brown’s associate, David Bernard was yesterday charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until March 21.
A wanted bulletin has been issued for Brown.
