Saira Banu (Junglee, Zameer)
"When I was offered Junglee, I had come down for my holidays from London. At that point, the only heroes I had heard of were Dilip Saab, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. I hadn't watched a single film of Shammi Saab. The first thing we shot was the Yahoo song in Srinagar. I had no idea how to lip sync or react to the music. He was so upset with me. He told me that I was wasting time, and that I should learn acting."

"It made me so angry that I took it as a challenge to do the song right. It became a cult number. We were offered a lot of films together, which I refused to sign because I was still upset with him. Now I feel I could have done so much more work with him. But we were family friends; Yusuf Saab (Dilip Kumar) and he would speak in Punjabi for hours. I will never forget those moments," added the actress.

Sharmila Tagore (Kashmir Ki Kali, An Evening In Paris)
"He was not like the rest of the Kapoors. He was completely out-of-the-box, and that's what everyone loved about him. When I first heard that I was doing my first Hindi film with Shammi Kapoor, I couldn't really believe my ears. But it is when I started working with him that I realised what a fine actor he was."

Sharmila went on to say, "On screen his mannerisms and eccentricities would overshadow a lot of other elements, but he was an extremely sensitive performer, you can see that in the song Ishaaron ishaaron mein in Kashmir Ki Kali. That quality of acting comes from theatre, which is where he first began his training."

Vyjayantimala (Prince)
The last time I met Shammiji was in Atlanta at an awards function many years ago. I remember his smiling face even when he was on the wheelchair. As an actor, I would say he was very self-involved, trying to master every move. That's what created such a trademark style for him. He would try and outdo himself each time. There was a sequence in Prince where Helen, Shammiji and I had a musical number to perform. It was like three different styles of dance coming together. But even then, he stood out.

"I was very scared to work with him because I had heard he was a very boisterous personality. Plus I was very new to the industry, so I was anyway intimidated by many other actors. However, when I met him, I realised how nice and gentle a person he was. In fact, Andaz was one film where he wasn't jumping around; it was a much more controlled performance."

Remembering the yesteryear rockstar, Hema went on to say, "I still remember the song Dil use do, jo jaan de de where he had to make me dance. I was surprised by how flexible and charming he was when he took to the dance floor. He used to choreograph himself most of the times, and the cameramen would have a tough time trying to capture his moves. It was when he became spiritual that I got very close to his family. His wife and he used to go to a babaji in Nainital and would always invite me.

Shammi was a very affectionate person. He knew how to treat every heroine and co-actor with dignity, something which today's generation totally lacks."

Ah ha ha tum bhi dil deke jal jaana seekho ji

Samjho samjho samjho deewane ki zabaan
Pyar jo na hota na hota yeh jahaan
Oh ho ho tum bhi dil deke yeh gaana seekho ji
Ah ha ha tum bhi dil deke yeh gaana seekho ji

"Yes! Shammi wanted to marry me, Mumtaz:" Tuesday, August 16, 2011

When the entire world bids a final goodbye to the lively veteran Shammi Kapoor, his co-star Mumtaz recalls that the actor was 'breathtakingly handsome'. Kapoor, who fell in love with Nadia Gamal, a belly dancer he met in Ceylon, also proposed to marry co-star Mumtaz, after the death of his first wife Geeta Bali.

"I was only 18-years-old when he told me that he wanted to settle down with me. I was getting several film offers and I didn't want to marry so early in my life," she explained. Revealing further that her denial did not result into a sour relationship between them. "It was a very straightforward thing. He proposed and I politely said 'No'. That was it. I respected him a lot. We all will miss him," says Mumtaz.

SHAMMI KAPOOR'S JUNGLEE

STAR CAST:
Shammi Kapoor ... Chandra Shekhar
Saira Banu ... Rajkumari 'Raj'
Shashikala ... Mala
Anoop Kumar ... Jeevan
Lalita Pawar... Shekhar's Mother

2: JUNGLEE:

Junglee a 1961 Indian movie produced and directed by Subodh Mukherjee. Junglee means "Wild" or "ill mannered" in Urdu & Hindi. The music is by Shankar Jaikishan and the lyrics by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri. The film stars Shammi Kapoor, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala and Asit Sen. Saira Banu, in her debut film, earned a Filmfare nomination as Best Actress and became a star.

The movie was a lighthearted musical that further enhanced Shammi Kapoor's stature as the youth icon of the times. The "Yahoo" song became a symbol of Shammi's wild (Junglee) loverboy image of the times. The switch from the serious actor image Shammi started out with, was started by Tumsa Nahin Dekha, reinforced by Dil Deke Dekho and completed by Junglee. The film became a "superhit" at the box office. The film was later remade into the Telugu film "Saradaa Ramudu" (1980) starring N.T. Rama Rao and Jayasudha

Synopsis of Junglee

Chandrashekhar (Shammi Kapoor) or Shekhar as he is called now, belongs to an aristrocratic family, who believe laughter is a sign of belonging to the lower class, and as a result laughter is not encouraged in the household, run by Shekhar's domineering mom (Lalita Pawar). In this household the only one who dares to laugh and enjoy life is Shekhar's sister Mala (Shashikala), who also dares to love Jeevan (Anoop Kumar). Things change when their mom finds out about Mala's indiscretions, and she asks Shekhar to take her away from their home, to distant and scenic Kashmir, for a while. She also instructs Shekhar to arrange to get married to a girl from a princely family. When Shekhar escorts Mala out of town, and on reaching Kashmir, he meets up with beautiful Rajkumari (Saira Banoo), and after being stranded with her for a night during a snowstorm, he realizes what he has been missing, and becomes a care-free man in love. This change is welcomed by Mala, but not by his mother. To make matters worse, Rajkumari does not belong to a princely family, and Shekhar knows that his mom will never approve of his marriage with Rajkumari.

3) YAHOO CHAHE KOYI MUJHAY JUNGLEE KAHAY

Chaahe koyi mujhe junglee kahe, kehne do jee kehta rahe
Let everyone call me a wild person, let them continue saying the same
Hum pyaar ke toofaanon mein gire hai, hum kya kare) (2)
We've fallen in the tycoon of love, what can we do
Chaahe koyi mujhe junglee kahe yahoo! yahoo!
Let everyone call me a wild person, yahoo yahoo

(Mere seene mein bhi dil hai, hai mere bhi kuch armaan
Even I have a heart, even I have a few desires
Mujhe patthar to na samjho, main hoon aakhir ek insaan)2
Dont think of me as a stone, I'm also a human being
(Raah meri wohi jiss pe duniya chali)2
My road is the same that the others take

Let everyone call me a wild person, let them continue saying the same
Hum pyaar ke toofaanon mein gire hai, hum kya kare) (2)

Chaahe koyi mujhe junglee kahe yahoo! yahoo!
Let everyone call me a wild person, yahoo yahoo

(Sard aahen keh rahi hai, hai yeh kaisi balaa ki aag
Cold breath says that, what type of fire is this
Sote sote zindgaani ghabara ke uthi hai jaag)2
Even while sleeping I wake up with fear
(Main yahaan se wahaan jaise yeh aasmaan)2
I'm from this side to that side just like the sky

Chaahe koyi mujhe junglee kahe, kehne do jee kehta rahe
Let everyone call me a wild person, let them continue saying the same
Hum pyaar ke toofaanon mein gire hai, hum kya kare) (2)

4) EHSAAN TERA HOGA MUJH PAR

Ehasaan teraa hogaa mujh par, dil chaahataa hai vo kahane do
You will make me grateful, let me say what the heart wants
Mujhe tum se muhabbat ho gai hai
I have fallen in love with you
Mujhe palakon ki chhaano mein rahane do
Let me stay in the shadows of your eye lids (close to you)

Tumne mujhko hasna sikhaaya ho
You have taught me to laugh
Tumne mujhko hasna sikhaaya
You have taught me to laugh
Rone kahoge ro lenge ab
If you tell me to cry, I will cry
Rone kahoge ro lenge ab
If you tell me to cry, I will cry
Aansoo ka hamaare gham na karo
Do not feel sad about my tears
Woh behte hai to behne do
Let it flow if it wants to
mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai
I have fallen in love with you
Mujhe palko ki chaav mein rehne do
(Let me stay in the shadows of your eyelids
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
You will make me grateful

Chaahe banaa do chaahe mitaa do aaaa
It is up to you to make or break me
Chaahe banaa do chaahe mitaa do
It is up to you to make or break me
Mar bhi gaye to denge duvaayen
Even if I die, I will give you by blessings
Mar bhi gaye to denge duvaayen
Even if I die, I will give you my blessings
Udd udd ke kahegi khaak sanam
Even the ashes will blow in the wind and say
Yeh dard-e-mohabbat sehne do
My lover let me suffer the sorrows of love)
Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai
(I have fallen in love with you)
Mujhe palko ki chaav mein rehne do
