GAWU says thousands of sugar workers on strike over pay freeze

GAWU says that thousands of sugar workers at the Albion, Blairmont and Uitvlugt Estates have downed tools as they heightened their call for a pay rise.

GuySuCo has not paid increased salaries since 2015.

In a release today, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) said that scores of workers together with officials from GAWU and NAACIE  also participated in a picketing exercise outside of the Ministry of the Presidency as they called on the Government of Guyana to bring an end to the wage freeze and to approve a pay rise to them.

The workers and the Unions are contending that the Government ought not to ignore the plight of the workers who are employed by a state-owned enterprise.

The release said that the workers have dismissed utterances by several Governmental officials that it is the Board of GuySuCo which is required to approve a pay increase to them. The workers questioned if this was indeed the case, why was it the Government, and not the Board, that engaged the Unions and other stakeholders on the closure of four sugar estates in recent times. They reminded that it was President David Granger himself, who admitted, that it was the Government that made the decision to close Wales Estate.

β€œThe workers are of the strong view that the Administration has more than a moral obligation to assist them as they reminded that even former President Forbes Burnham, who founded PNCR, the largest party in the Coalition Government, had not treated them as (terribly)  as his successors are today”, the release said.

The protesting workers echoed the sentiments of Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo who recently said  that there are monies available for a pay rise to sugar workers. They said they were at a loss to know why the Government, which had embraced them prior to attaining office, was treating them with such derision.

β€œIn the meantime, the GAWU is well aware that the Corporation has seen the necessity of granting workers a pay rise. We are knowledgeable of certain proposals that have been put forward by the Management which stress the urgency to grant a rise in pay to the workers. We also have come to know that those proposals have received the support of some in the GuySuCo Board of Directors. Clearly, a pay rise to sugar workers is no longer optional but it is now an imperative. Moreover, the necessity has gained traction and it appears that the decision is ultimately left up to the powers-that-be. Of course, their inaction, thus far, is a clear indicator as to where they stand on the issue”, the release added.

GAWU should buy Rosehall

The Union should buy the entire GUYSUCO , borrow money and invest to make the Sugar workers happy. Lots of bright boys in the Organization , they will get free advise from best Russian Trained Economist in the world.

Let the government repay the sugar workers the levy that was imposed on them which amount to $85M US.

The industry was Nationalized in the mid 70's , and named GUYSUCO , production went downhill up to 1985. The same year free and fair elections was held on October, 5 . The PPP/C won the elections ,privatization of GUYSUCO was halted , the rest is history , currently the industry is in a begging mode.

What does your statement has to do with what’s already taken from the sugar workers.

The damage was already done and it was PPP that abolish the levy in 2002.

Do YOU know sugar was the main contributor to the country GDP.

Do YOU know the sugar levy was used to fund Linden Community, Public Service, Guyana National Service.

What your Synopsis has to do with levy money?

I speak of the levy when you insult the sugar workers by saying GAWU should take loan and invest for sugar workers.

The sugar workers money was used to invest other areas than its intended purpose, today that money would be over $100 Billion G at a exchange rate of 220 to 1.

You run around again like a headless chicken speaking of Synopsis.

How many billions was used to bail out the Sugar Industry ? Anyway useless conversation , does happen when folks don't deal with reality.

There is no insult to the Sugar Workers , their predicament was caused by the Union an arm of the PPP that represent them.

Reality.. eh. You are a suitable candidate who doesn’t live in reality.

- Billions bail out Guysuco... the workers were paying back taxes from the earning and there was multiplier effects that benefits  all sectors.

- Sugar was still a foreign exchange earner.

- The billions wasn’t given β€œ FREE β€œ like the billions that  is given to Linden to subsidize electricity with NO economic benefit to the country.

If the sugar workers were all Afro, you will be a singing a different tune.

Sugar is dead , killed by the PPP. Luckily black gold was found ,Guyana would have been a basket case for a long time.

No other industries was created by the PPP they were there for 23 yrs and claimed to have all the smarts, same old ..Sugar ,Rice ,Bauxite ,Timber and Gold . Damn the country importing Lumber.

Have a great evening.

Frenno, honestly I have a problem with your statement here. First, not only Indos working in sugarcane fields. Secondly, while it's indeed backbreaking work it provides jobs to thousands of young men who didn't do well in school and couldn't acquire other skills.

You and I know that in every school there's a percentage of non-achievers. If manual jobs weren't available in sugar estates there would have been an unemployment crisis with mammoth social problems.

Let's assume your dream materializes and sugar industry dead fo good. You think the oil industry would accommodate those thousands of non-achievers who leave school every year?

Thank god that PPP started oil exploration.

PNC can only fete, sport, wine down, rape the constitution and ignore the law including CCJ ruling.

How many years will that take ? looks like you want Indos to continue with that back breaking work , they have slaved enough , time to find other work .

Oil exploration was started years ago , new technology make it possible to drill deeper and extract.

They will find work ,nuff shore base facilities opening.

Here is an old story about TT and Sugar.

Sugar industry was doomed to fail: the truth behind Caroni’s closure

Thanks for the article. I have always respected Rafique Shah since the early 1970s. His article on the Caroni closure gives me points to consider.

Impressive. PNC should listen and learn !

She not sport and wine down like de PNC on their lazy asses waiting for aile money.

I always said, Indians and anyone with an entrepreneur flare will flourish when infrastructure and power improves!  Indians will get rich on oil without ever touching any oil employment!

On the side, that beauty is well spoken and seems externally educated!

But sugar dead fuh good.

It never coming back wid them dilapidated infrastructure and outdated equipment. If the PPP is the one to revitalize the industry, then it is the opportunity for their corruption.

The PPP lying to the Indian people. Indians muss know that CBJ was going to kill the industry back in the late 40s. In 1992, the PPP victory did not revived the industry considering the cannibalizing of the industry by the PNC. Instead, Jagan tossed into Guysuco some real big time Indo crooks. Rape would be a decent word, the Indians got real fvcked. And soon coming again.
