The Government is doing all within its means to enable students to acquire a sound primary and secondary education to be able to make a meaningful contribution to the development of Guyana. This is according to the Minister of Education Shaik Baksh while commissioning an eight million dollar Martindale primary school annex in Pomeroon region two.

Education Minister Shaik Baksh said the facility represents a fulfillment of a promise by the government to Pomeroon residents a few years ago.

Guyana has already achieved universal access to primary education and is on the verge of achieving universal access to secondary education. Under the new education legislation currently before the attorney general’s chambers, pre- primary education has been made compulsory.

Parents will be required to send their children age three years nine months to school, or risk being placed before the court. Baksh said the move is part of the ministry’s drive to build a solid foundation at the pre- primary level that will allow pupils to make a smooth transition to primary school.

The goal at the primary level, he said is to get pupils to learn to read before they enter grade three, and master the basics in literacy and numeracy before they leave the primary cycle. On this score, Baksh said parents have a role to play in the process, noting that they must ensure that their children attend school every day, and are given the attention they deserve at home.

The initiatives implemented by the ministry such as the school feeding and uniform programs and transportation assistance program are efforts by the ministry to increase attendance in schools. The truancy campaign and guidance and councilor officers are also in place to help students attend school regularly and to achieve successful outcomes in their end of term exams.

Minister Baksh, are you of a sane mind, or is this just a Guyana job with a US visa on standby ?
You department was unable to protect a student from murder by a visiting school dropout, when ther were police officers around and you want parents to feel safe about sending their children to school.
When photos were shown to a REO about lack of school furniture, instead of an acknowlegement and work towards improving the situation, she ********** other headteachers and her TV station sister to deny it.
Mr. Baksh, why does parents have to protest about school repairs in public, before you come out like a hero, with front page news to do the repairs ?

You must be aware that your present education system is falling apart. Fix that first and students will attend school willingly.
