Cumberland Village duo charged with series of robberies

Sylvester Joseph, 29, and Ashley Bonita Drigpaul, 22, both of Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where they were jointly charged with a series of robberies.

It is alleged that on Saturday April 13 at Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice, while armed with dangerous weapons (guns and cutlasses), the duo robbed Aditiee Rambudhan of nine gold finger rings valued $109,000, one engagement ring valued $65,000, two pairs of gold bangles valued $200,000, one gold band valued $35,000, three gold chains valued $125,000, one gold cricket band valued $60,000, $110,000 in cash and one Samsung cellular phone valued $88,000, for a total value $792,000.

They were also charged with robbing Tarmattie Seelochan of $300,000 cash, one gold finger ring valued $80,000, one NUU cellular phone valued $20,000, one IPhone 6 valued $120,000, for a total value $520,000; Premchand Seelochan of two gold finger rings valued $64,000, one silver band valued $125,000, one wrist watch valued $17,000 for a total value of $206,000 and Neil Seelochan of one IPhone 6S valued $140,000, one NUU cellular phone valued $10,000 and $40,000 in cash for a total value of $190,000.

Additionally, the duo were charged with robbing Fizal Latiff of $10,000 cash and one Samsung Galaxy S5 cellphone valued $25,000, Rohan Deonarine of three gold chains valued $200,000, and one IPhone 6 valued $120,000 and Andre Beerbhajan of one Toyota Allion motor car HC 7983 valued $1.9 million, one IPhone 6 valued $65,000, one gold chain valued $125,000 and one silver band valued $120,000.

Bail was denied for the unrepresented duo who plead not guilty to all the charges yesterday. They will return to court on April 24.

 Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told, that the mastermind behind the Canje robbery and a recent Corentyne robbery was nabbed yesterday in Linden. A police source disclosed, that the suspect will be transported to ‘B’ Division where he is expected to face similar charges.
