RISE Guyana calls for

GECOM CHAIRMAN TO RESIGN

Dear Justice Patterson, We have followed the events leading up to your appointment as Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission with keen interest and have no doubt that your considerable experience as a jurist in Guyana and the Caribbean played a major part in your selection.

By your own admission you were only contacted by His Excellency hours before being sworn in and therefore would have been given very little time to consider the following:

That this unilateral decision would have widened the divisions already existing in Guyana;

That by your acceptance, you would be thumbing your nose at a number of your eminently qualified brothers and sisters at the bar who have been unfairly painted as not fit and proper;
That the questions surrounding your appointment and the lack of support from a wide cross-section of Guyanese would result in doubts about the legitimacy of any election occurring during your tenure.

Further, we wish to respectfully point out that the pledge of non-cooperation made by the opposition as a result of your appointment, would derail the hopes of the entire nation for constitutional reform.

As a scholar of literature we take this opportunity to remind you of the words of Iago in Othello Act 3 Scene 3:

Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls;
Who steals my purse steals trash; ’tis something, nothing;
’twas mine, ’tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed.

Your appointment, received after many years of faithful service to the judiciary may well have the effect of negating much of what you have achieved.

We, at RISE, therefore call on you to tender your resignation both for your personal and national interests, and seal forever your legacy as a man who loved Guyana.

Yours sincerely,

RISE Guyana
