Re-arrested murder accused hangs self in lockups

Three days after he was set free and subsequently rearrested on a charge of murder, 20-year-old Chris Primus hanged himself in the lock-ups at the Bartica Police Station. Ranks at the station made the shocking discovery around 07:30 hours yesterday when they found him hanging by a rope in his cell. Investigators are now trying to ascertain how the suspect obtained a rope in the lock-ups but they are working on the theory that Primus used a piece of rope from his haversack to commit the act.
Chris Primus of Moco Moco, Region Nine, had been charged with murder committed on Sylvester Simon at Apaikwa Landing, Enachu, on August 29, 2010. Simon, of St. Ignatius, Lethem, was stabbed to death and two others wounded during the fracas. Primus made his last court appearance at Bartica on Friday last where the matter was discharged by Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani, following submissions by his attorney. The lawyer had submitted that after several adjournments, the police were still unprepared to prosecute the matter hence the Magistrate discharged the accused. “I spoke to him on Friday, minutes after the matter ended. He said that he was on the road already and the police came and arrested him,” the dead man’s uncle Alton told this newspaper via telephone yesterday. According to his attorney, following Primus’ re-arrest, enquiries were made of the police as to the reason.

However, none was forthcoming and one constable related that he was just acting on instructions. The lawyer, who asked not to be named, said that he was preparing to further represent Primus today in the reinstituted charge when he received news that his client had hanged himself. “The police said that he took a rope from his bag, but how could a prisoner take a rope into the lock-ups?” the lawyers asked.
Police in a press release said that there were two other prisoners in the cell along with Primus and they were last checked and found to be all alive at 04:00 hours yesterday. The other two prisoners, however, claimed that they were asleep and did not notice anything.
Alton Primus told this newspaper that he was scheduled to make contact with his nephew sometime yesterday to provide him with some words of comfort, “now this is the news we get.” He said that it is difficult to relate the tragic news to the dead man’s grandparents who brought him up as a baby. The dead man’s grandfather is Guyana’s oldest man, 111-year-old Sonny Hendricks, while the victim’s grandmother is 98. “He (Sonny Hendricks) was expecting to see him before he died, now I don’t’ know what to tell him. They mind him from small,” Alton Primus told Kaieteur News.
