Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran has been named as the presidential candidate of A New and United Guyana, a statement from the party said.

The statement follows:

A New and United Guyana (ANUG) announces that at a Members’ Meeting held on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, Georgetown, Ralph Hari Narayen Ramkarran was elected as its Presidential Candidatefor the upcoming General and Regional Elections due to be held on March 2, 2020.

Mr. Ramkarran is a founding member of ANUG and is its General Secretary. He has played a major role, along with the Chairman, Mr. Timothy Jonas and many others, in recognizing the need for a New Political Party with a unique and singular vision. ANUG is dedicated to bringing to an end the competition for ethno-political dominance in Guyana’s politics by creating: (a) a Governance System which provides for the equal participation at the executive level of Guyana’s main political forces; (b) an Electoral System that provides for elected constituency representatives while maintaining proportionality, and; (c) a representative legislatureindependent of the executive.

While ANUG’s policies have been substantially determined and will be announced as the election campaign seasondevelops, we are still in the process of refining some policies and devising additional ones to meet the needs of Guyana as our income grows from the exploitation of our petroleum resources.

However, ANUG believes that the most fundamental issue facing the Guyanese people, over and above every other issue, is that of our System of Government. We further believe that unless that system changes in such a way that the harmful consequences of ethnic competition between our main political parties is substantially reduced, the political instability which has consumed us for much of the past yearand much of our modern political history, will continue to be the dominant features of our lives. This will occur while solutions to crime and corruption and the rewards of agrowing economy over the coming years will continue to elude the Guyanese people.

Ralph Ramkarran, an Attorney-at-Law and Senior Counsel, is a well-known and prominent political personality, of vast experience, who has devoted his entire adult life to the political development of Guyana through the Peoples’ Progressive Party. Mr. Ramkarran, at 73, was a member of the PPP’s Central Committee and Executive Committee since 1974 and 1975 respectively. Among the main positions in which he served are as a member of the Elections Commission for the 1973, 1992, 1997 and 2001 elections, as a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2001, as Chair of the Constitution Reform Commission in 1999-2000 and as Speaker of the National Assembly from 2001 to 2012. He resigned from the PPP in June 2012 when it was made impossible for him to continue his membership after he wrote an article in the PPP’s newspaper, Mirror, calling for steps to be taken to reduce the “Pervasive Corruption” in Guyana.

Ralph Ramkarran’s political activity over the recent decades has required him to collaborate with widely varying political forces to find solutions to the most complex issues dividingpolitical parties. These include the resolution of disputes over the conduct of elections, the complex divergences inconstitutional reform or negotiating disagreements and disputes as Speaker. His political career has been marked largely by these engagements with opposing political forces to solve problems. These experiences will be an unerring guide as ANUG engages with other political parties to reform our Governance System and expend our growing resources.

For the above reasons ANUG believes that Ralph Ramkarranis the candidate best qualified person to be ANUG’s Presidential Candidate and to lead Guyana into the new era of constructing an agreed Governance System that serves all itspeople.

Any update on the health of the Gilbakka? He is the Rankster's number one volunteer.

I hope he is just staying away from GNI. If not, I hope that he gets better soon.

Banna look yeh, haul your ass!  Everyone has rights that must be protected, why would you think it's only the rights of Hindus that could be trampled on?

Read the last paragraph of the article.

What the rass does Ralph being a candidate have anything to do with being a Hindu and why does this concern you when you don't live in Guyana?

Furthermore, I think it's more like the Rastas in Guyana have to protect their rights.

Listen up.  Hindus in Guyana have to protect their rights.

Dude, some 40 percent of indians are not hindus. Of the remainder I would bet at least 10 percent go to church at the rumshop. Even upper crust hindus like Nehru are "pork cutters" hindus!

It is public knowledge that Trump is an Anglican/Episcopal. Clinton is a Methodist. Jagan  an Atheist Burnham was a Methodist and Kali Mai puja

Ralph is a public political figure with a Hindu last name. He should clear the air about his faith if any.
