Ramjattan sent 12 cops to the U.S to learn to ride bicycles the country donated to Guyana

Kaieteur News-Former Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, had sent 12 members from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Georgetown City Constabulary to the United States of America (U.S.A) to acquire special riding skills for “high-class” bicycles, which that country donated to Guyana.
Kaieteur News learnt of this after a civilian was caught examining one of the bicycles. While doing so, the individual was told to be careful as it is a “high-class bike” and ranks had to be sent overseas to learn how to ride it. The individual related that they became curious and asked to do a test ride.

After being permitted to do so, the individual noted that the only difference between their bicycle and the Force’s donated bike was that, “It have rash breaks and the seat very comfortable”.

According to reports, 200 of the “high class” bicycles along with accessories were donated to the GPF by the USA’s Department of State through the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL).

An article posted on the US Embassy in Guyana’s website noted that the bicycles cost US$145,000.

They were handed over to Ramjattan who at the time was in charge of public security. The GPF received 170 bicycles and the City Constabulary received 30.

USA had told Guyana that they will be providing training for some of its officers to learn how to ride the bikes. The training commenced on November 28, 2016, and concluded on December 2, 2016. The officers were trained with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The officers did not only learn how to use the bicycles but were also trained to pass on their sophisticated skill set to other officers upon returning to Guyana. It was reported that the officers were exposed to practical and classroom exercises on how to ride safely and comfortably in traffic.

Additionally, they were taught enhanced riding skills and given the opportunity to practice in diverse traffic conditions so that they could employ techniques to keep themselves safe and free from accidents while traversing public roads. They were also taught defensive tactics to use while on patrol and how to best maintain and repair their bikes.

WTR? Geez man, I have a bike with the same brakes (the article has "breaks") as on those bikes, they are disc brakes and the front ones have to be pressed lightly because they stop on a dime, it could also be lessened a bit..my bike has 3 gear wheels and 11 sprockets making it 33 gears (do we really need that many?) that's the only difference to any other bike.

This has to be a joke. Can't see anything else but.

I am not that convinced. To me it sounds absolutely true. These people are incredibly stupid OR drunk most of the time, they have no clue what they are doing. And I speak for both PPP and PNC. Arrogantly stupid bastards.

Those are sweet bikes and it does take a bit of getting used to but riding a sweet light easy rolling bike, especially in GT..no friken hills shouldn't be a problem. I rode a constant bike (one gear,no pedal backward) from Albertown to East Ruimveldt for school. These people got it made, I should go down or better yet we boy D2 and show them how to ride a dam bike with Disc brakes (great in wet weather, just don't hit that front brake too sharp whether in rain or dry weather) Yes, I had a few instances where I wasn't paying attention..first on a trail..nice tight bamsy jogging ahead...oooopsss!  Hit the brake too hard..Dead stop..back lifts off the ground..I caught myself in time after yanking my foot from the pedal clip and missed hitting my jewels off the bar. Another time and the one after that was same bamsy and so on story.

After all that, it is a dam stooooopid idea spending money on something that one can learn within a few mins of riding. And what derass about soff seat, they need to learn how to sit too? Oh Yeh...an doan ride drunk that's when you gonna run into problems.

It is over US12k per bike. That's friken expensive I wonder what the heck they are built with. Any bets on how long they last either by bruk up or tief? I say first one around Leh we say..ahhhhhh....by end of June.

cain

Ahhhhh I must missed that. I read it as bikes donated would have cost 145k. .Also just realized it's 200 bikes..that would instead be $725US...now that's more like it.

Dem US cops gonna have a big laugh when they see those cops learning to ride bicycles. In the past, cars and motor cycles were donated and no mention of going overseas to learn how to operate them but a bicycle..Whoa! Hold me back, this is some serious stuff we getting into now.

This is a non-story that has its genesis in hearsay. So the USA donates bikes and provided training on use, among other things, and this somehow turns out to be a negative story. Only in Guyana!

S

Come on for frig sakes, it's not a negative story, more of a comedy show. Who the hell goes to a foreign country to learn how to ride a fkin bicycle? Only stupid Guyanese.

Banna, I'm scared of DG, see how he does bring out the whip. I sticking to the topic which is..Ramjattan sent 12 cops to learn to ride bicycles.

Perhaps, some important things they became aware to do includes ...

- changing the wheels

- inflating the tires to specification

- adjusting the saddles

- how to use the pedals

- ensuring the gears function well

- etc, etc., etc..
