Racial slurs cause driver to assault reporter

MAY 21, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER COURT STORIESFEATURES / COLUMNISTSNEWS

A D’Urban Street minibus driver was on Tuesday, released on self-bail after he was accused of assaulting

Terry Campbell

Terry Campbell

a News Update’s (Channel 65) reporter and news anchor.
Terry Campbell, of Lot 11 D’Urban Street, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on May 16, at Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Courdel Jones.
According to reports Campbell and several other persons in a minibus were hurling racial remarks. Jones and an elderly woman who were occupants of the vehicle at the time became startled as the remarks were being hurled.
The elderly woman intervened and the occupants of the minibus, including the driver began arguing with her.
However, Jones rose in defence of the elderly woman; he also made several comments on the issue. After Campbell heard the comments made by Jones, he stopped the bus, exited and dealt Jones several cuffs to his face.
According to Jones, the conductor and other passengers participated in assaulting him. During a bail application, Campbell’s Attorney informed the Magistrate that the matter would be settled outside of the court. But this was quickly refuted by Jones.
Nonetheless, the driver was placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the outcome of the matter.
The case will be called again on June 9, before Magistrate Annette Singh.

The Government needs to introduce hate laws in Guyana and aggressively prosecute them.

This sort of thing will quickly spiral out of control.

The President and the PM needs to step up and speak directly to the people explaining that this behavior is unacceptable.

a couple of Afro-Guyanese in a brawl over use of racially insensitive remarks in a minibus

this is a case of assault over ignoble shyte pure and simple

where do you people get off creating a "hate crime" crisis out of nothing?

we are just days from an election where the PPP waged a scorched earth, racially divisive campaign unprecedented in Guyana's history, and no Indian Guyanese was killed or assaulted "for being Indian" (per Shaitaan) or their property destroyed . . . other than the barn at Sophia, that is

note that the opportunistic bandits at Sophia were promptly arrested, have already appeared in court, and face major jail time!

somehow it seems that the refusal of Afro-Guyanese to wage war on Indo-Guyanese is disorienting to some . . . taking y'all out of some sort of ideological comfort zone

people, ignar blacks and Indians will continue to say coarse and nasty things about each other . . . just look around you on GNI

it's called free speech jokers

they are NOT, however, allowed to harm anyone or destroy property . . . and no one is credibly claiming that this is occurring

stop inventing a crisis where none exists!

i'm fed up with y'all

What yuh mean quiet? Actions are also important. The President said he does not care who you voted for. This was reported loud and clear today. Please read the papers. Just be professional and serve the country and govt of the day. PYO guys still have their jobs. Even Brazzie and Raj Singh have their wuk. Is that not enough? Or y'all will go around self-discriminating aluh self to claim victimhood like de dhal and flour matter? I am not condoning ethnic verbal harassment. It is a fact that these instances are widespread.

Well now we are headed in the right direction.

In the meanwhile, there is nothing wrong in criticizing things that we disagree with. That will make for a better Guyana.

The first 100 days will give us a very good idea as to where we are headed.

Ramjattan better get his act together in dealing with escalating crime and yes, it was a PPP problem but he is now responsible and he must be held accountable.

Indos need security in order for them to have confidence to invest and make progress, if APNU can tackle this problem then they will govern for another 100 years.

Do not attempt to misguide anyone read the headlines of the article and the article itself.

Regardless of this article it does not take away from the fact that Guyana needs hate laws implemented similar to models used in other countries to protect the rights of citizens. Who knows the laws may even be on the books but no one is enforcing or socializing this with the public.

Bottom line is APNU+AFC Minister of Cohesion will address this issue this is a top priority for the lady.

I see.  Only Indos need security, and only Indos are investors.

No wonder the PPP is now down to 3 sad souls and nasty cardboard signs.  They cannot even afford a proper sign now.  All the soup drinkers have now fled to Granger and/or Moses.

If the PPP had still been in government the bandits would still be roaming Guyana free as a bird. When was the last time that a major crime like this was solved so quickly and bandits taken into custody? I can't remember a single one in all the 23 years of PPP rule.
