– Brazilian Army Engineering and Construction Battalion (BEC) to undertake project

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Some five dozen members of the Brazilian Army Engineering and Construction Battalion (BEC) are expected to arrive in Aishalton, Region Nine later this month to begin drilling of water wells in the South Rupununi.

President David Granger, Ministers of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock and Valarie Garrido-Lowe, Regional Chairman of Region Nine, Brian Allicock being welcomed into Shulinab by Toshao Nicholas Fredericks

Regional Chairman of Region Nine, Brian Allicock, made the announcement at Heritage Day in Shulinab on Saturday, September 15.

President David Granger said the project is important to stimulating economic development in the South Rupununi. “Once you have the wells and once you have water for your animals and your crops we can move closer towards food security,” the President said.

BEC is expected to drill some eight wells in eight indigenous villages from South Rupununi which will provide water security to villages during the dry season in the Region.

The project is part of a Complementary Agreement to the Basic Agreement on Technical Cooperation signed between the Presidents of Guyana and Brazil last year, to develop infrastructure projects. President Granger made an official state visit to Brazil last December.

I just came back from the home country. There is no evidence of PPP preparing for local election. In the  strong base neighbourhood of PPP, residence have no idea if PPP local groups are functioning.

The only representatives they have seen, are from UF party canvassing the community.

Back in the days, there will be regular evening bottom house  meeting, with senior rep from FH visiting each party group for updates and so forth ( Comrade Gill can attest to this ). FH has not reach out to their local bases for years, there is a disconnect.

In every communities, young people ( mostly) males can be seen walking the streets smoking drugs and drinking alcohol at street corners, asking for a raise.

There is evidence of mental stress from these individuals who don’t work... at times fear grip you  when they walk around with cutlass or wood in their hands.

School drop out is huge, 80% of attendance are female.Prostitution  is on the increase.

Some locals taking advantage of the situation and are opening  bars ( almost 1 -2 bars are in one street ) blasting music, competing for patrons from 7 AM until the wee hours of the morning, 7 days a week.

DJ, these liquor licence needs to be regulated.

The money is send from overseas family and the women folks go out to work leaving the men at home, hoping he will get a job.. but they choose to drink alcohol and beat their wives when she they gets home . The local religious organization are corrupt, they are of no help to society, and the community members knows  this and this has its ripple effects. No one does anything to help.

@ Brother Dave

You paint a very honest picture of the situation in Guyana. It is very sad to see the degradation in Guyanese society today.

And especially the Hindu community.

At a time like this the Dharmic Sabha, Virat Sabha, Pandits' Council etc should summon pandits and read the Hindu "riot act" to them. Pandits have a social responsibility and be good role models.
