Why was this building not saved and turned into a museum, library or research centre?

A “Day of Appreciation” has been planned for President Bharrat Jagdeo as he prepares to depart office in the next few months.

“This is an initiative of a number of private citizens who talked among themselves about this new phenomenon… of seeing a president leave office while not being rejected by the polls but as a result of constitutional term limits,” organizer of the event Bishop Juan Edghill told Stabroek News of the September 16 event at the Guyana National Stadium.

Edghill, during a brief interview, said he considered Jagdeo’s way of departure as something that must be applauded. “The same person who signed this into law would be the person who will be affected by it… and who has also said he intends to comply with the constitution,” he noted.

“The intent is to simply say look, all of our presidents, the time when Guyana would have said thanks to them is when they are in a coffin or in a casket at their funeral. We believe that people should be able to smell the flowers while they are still alive,” Edghill added.

As a result, he went on, a broad-based national committee was formed, comprising of people from religious, labour, private sector and other groups. These persons will be hosting the activity to show appreciation for the president and the contributions that he would have made as President of Guyana.

Edghill stated that the event is also to assure the President’s place in Guyana’s history as the first person who is leaving office as the result of constitutional term limits and to have this properly recognized by a large cross-section of Guyanese who might not have even voted for him in the first instance.

Among items on the programme are parachute displays by the Guyana Defence Force, Gymkhana stunts from the Guyana Police Force, renditions by the Joint Services’ choir and presentations from several groups.

The New Amsterdam Town Hall tower

President Bharrat Jagdeo today approved $5M for the restoration of the well known tower over the New Amsterdam Town Hall that has been overlooking the Region Six municipality for over 100 years.

The approval came after the Head of State met members of the Berbice Chamber of Commerce (BCC) at State House for discussions on the Chamber’s vision for the ancient county.

Among those present were BCC President Imran Saccoor, former President and Secretary Rohan Marray, member Ramesh Maraj and New Amsterdam Town Clerk Angelina Collins.

Restoration of the tower is one of the priorities in the Chamber’s future plans, fearful that its historic significance would be lost given its present state of disrepair.

“We thought that as members of the private sector, working along with the town council we can come together and form relationships that we are able to restore this tower… we are very happy that today the President has approved a sum of $5M which will go towards the restoration of this project,” Saccoor said.

The overhaul of the tower will add towards the beautification of New Amsterdam and Saccoor believes that pride will be restored as residents will be happy to see the tower back to its glory days.

He used the occasion to thank President Jagdeo for providing such support and his reputation of having an open door policy to persons in need of help.

Restoring pride in New Amsterdam is also a priority agenda of the town’s newly appointed Deputy Mayor Harold Dabydeen who was sworn in on June 15.

He had promised to focus on solid waste management, drainage and irrigation and a public educational campaign.

The council has already acquired a bobcat and small excavator for drainage and garbage clean up and efforts are being made to increase the municipality's subvention and acquire more machinery to strengthen municipal undertakings.

You AFC dunces need to realize that these one off payments to beautify the nation can not be used as a comparison to the fixed amounts required to sustain higher pay in the public sector, police and teachers. At the beginning of the fiscal year a budget made to allocate to police and teachers together with negotiations with the unions. If excess money come in from taxes, the govt is free to allocate elsewhere.
