President lauds China’s economic growth, expresses gratitude for its assistance to Guyana – as Year of the Dragon ushered in

The New Year observance is the most important festival for the Chinese people, and it was only fitting that Guyana’s Head of State Donald Ramotar joined in the celebrations at the Chinese Embassy this evening to usher in the Year of the Dragon.
Pointing out that it was traditional at the beginning of every year to reflect over the past year’s highlights and challenges, President Ramotar added that resolves are often made to aim higher in personal ambitions, and national goals.
He commended the Government and people of China for recording economic growth during the world’s financial crisis in 2011, and to continue to successfully develop economic policies to advance the standard of living of the Chinese.

“We wish the Chinese people even greater progress and prosperity in the Year of the Dragon,” the President stated, adding “the Dragon holds a special significance for the Chinese people. It is fitting therefore that this year we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries; a year in which we can celebrate further achievements and, further strengthen relations between our countries.”
President Ramotar reiterated Guyana’s gratitude for China’s friendship and continued valuable assistance.
Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Yu Wenzhe, explained that the Chinese New Year is a time of family reunions and sharing happiness and love. He pointed out that while the past year was significant for China that country’s policy of peaceful development led to its contribution to world economic growth and dealing with global challenges while contributing further to world peace and development. He added that this could not have been possible without the help of the people of the world, including the Government and people of Guyana.

Mr. Yu said while the two countries supported each other in many bilateral, regional and international issues, the real economic cooperation has brought tangible benefits, such as the two ferries delivered a few days ago.
“Forty years ago Guyana was the first Caribbean country to set up diplomatic relations with China,” said Mr. Yu, and, “over the years, relations have stood the test of time. Our relationship is guided by the core principles, of non interference in each other’s affairs, mutual benefit, and equality.”

He expressed confidence that with China and Guyana working together, bilateral relations will be taken to a new high, making the two countries’ friendship and cooperation even more fruitful.
According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. The Dragon is the symbol of good luck, good fortune and vitality.
“As we are about to enter into the Year of the Dragon, I wish the friendship and close cooperation between China and Guyana will be ever more fruitful with increasing vitality as symbolized by the Year of the Dragon. Also I have all confidence that all the Guyanese people will, under the leadership of his Excellency President Ramotar, join hands and work together for a better Guyana,” Mr. Yu stated.
