PPP to refund or donate salary increases- Jagdeo

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo. Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo.

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) plans to refund the salary increases that have been approved for the Opposition Leader and parliamentarians in keeping with its position that the pay-hikes are astronomical.
Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo made the announcement at a news conference held at his party’s headquarters, Freedom House, saying the ministerial and parliamentary pay hikes could not be justified.
“The PPP members of parliament have received the increase and so we are discussing one of two options on how to proceed on this matter-either to return the money to the Treasury with a cheque or to hand it over every month to a charity but definitely the members on our side will not take the increase,” he said.
The former Guyanese leader and one-time Finance Minister said it was illogical for the government to claim that the economy was bankrupt while at the same time paying higher ministerial salaries.
Jagdeo accused government of failing to fulfill its promises of increased salaries and doubling of Old Age Pensions. He said the cost of paying 26 ministers more would be higher than providing water subsidy for 44,000 pensionsers.

Government has argued that it needed to increase the salaries to avoid a loss of income, similar to what they had earned as professionals in the private sector. Another key explanation has been the need to address anonomalies in the salaries of the various categories of ministers on the one hand and members of the judiciary on the other hand.

Its a nasty nature of most in Guyana, that they will take or steal something, even if they don't need it.

It might sit in storage for years, instead of giving it to someone who could use it.

If Jagdeo and the PPP are not like most in Guyana, lets see a public list EVERY MONTH of the money returned to the treasury or given to the needy.

Greed is a bad ass thing to show as the quality of life and the PPP showed it well during their time in government, as the audit reports proved.

If Harmon had anything on Jagdeo, he be in jail right now. The Opposition(Naga and Ram) been after the man and his comfortable life style. I hear Naga got a swimming pool at his private residence-no one questioned him.

Would not be surprised if Ram going get a mansion too.

Jagdeo, juss had a whole lot of grateful friends who donated to his mansion. Jagdeo done alot things as plain as daylight on his government decisions that were wrong. Why isn't the government doing the right thing and repeal them?

Talking is one thing. Doing is another.

Note that Jagdeo is NOT sacrificing anything, as his pension is higher than even his INCREASED pay as leader of the opposition.

If Jagdeo wants to show what a patriot he is, he ought to give up his pension, as after all he is NOT a retired man.

Tje PPP is proving to the World that the PNC and their two House Slaves  ARE SHAMELESS BLOOD SUCKING PARASITES WHO ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN PERSONAL POWER AND WEALTH.  And if that is what the Guyanese People want, let it be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jagdeo is the biggest crook who should be in jail.  I refuse to listen to one word he has to say.  This shameless man who was the first to pay himself a mega salary and accompanying benefits has the gall to talk about this salary increase.  Yes the salary increase is ridiculous but I don't want to hear one sk#$nt what Jagdeo has to say about it.

Agreed 100%.

Why doesn't Jagdeo give up his extravagant pension, which is no more beneficial than the salary increases?  He ought to earn what Granger did s leader of the opposition.

He is being a hypocrite when his pension is the same as what Granger will earn.

Didn't you hear Granger got 5% increase too?  You can't leave out the leader in the raiding of the coffers.

President cops 5% salary increase; Nagamootoo says “we’re not greedy”

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Ending weeks of speculation on whether President David Granger received an increase in his salary along with that of Ministers, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Wednesday, October 21 confirmed that the President did receive a remuneration boost.

Nagamootoo at a post cabinet media briefing acknowledged that the Government did a bad job in packaging the salary increases offered to officials but maintained that it was necessary.

“We know that this was not going to be a popular decision…but that does not justify why we didn’t go out to the grassroots and bottom houses,” said Nagamootoo.

He stated that while the figures may have been exaggerated in some quarters of the media, he would like to set the record straight on the issue. In this regard he indicated that Junior Ministers still earn less than Permanent Secretaries.

Further, he emphasized that he received a 10% increase, revealing that the President himself got a 5% increase in his salary.

“This is not about greed…it is not a love of money that has motivated these salary increases…we did not walk away with the cookie jar,” he stated.

Nagamootoo was emphatic that a person coming into public office should not expect to earn less because they are now serving the public.

“I don’t believe that those who are saying that we have come into public office with an expectation that we will earn less ought not to seek office. If that is what happens in every sector, no one would want to be a judge because you will tell the lawyer when you become a judge you will get far less than perhaps what you dream of getting as a lawyer,” he argued.

“Seeking elected office anywhere in the world carries a salary. It could be more or it could be less but nowhere in the world do you see someone walk into an office and not expecting to be remunerated because they still have to live,” he added.

Meanwhile, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in a release to the media stated that several Members of Parliament on Tuesday night received by hand, their pay slips from the Parliament Office for the month of October 2015 reflective of their 19% increases.

“The Government, by hastily paying these increases in salaries to themselves, is clearly subverting the role of the National Assembly, violating the Standing Orders and contravening the law. All of this is designed to defeat the PPP/C’s efforts to challenge these unconscionable salary increases in the National Assembly,” the statement noted.

According to the Party, the decision to pay themselves these salary increases was made in similarly clandestine circumstances with no public announcement made at any Cabinet Press Briefings or anywhere else although the decision was made some time ago.

“We are again witnessing similar trickery and deception. But this will not stop us from proceeding with our Motion in the National Assembly and from pursuing every other available avenue to annul and reverse these reprehensible salary increases which we now realize have been paid in violation of the law and Parliamentary norms and practices,” said the PPP.

and just take a Regular MP Salary without any increase?

Now if Jagdeo return "De Fat Pension"

will Baseman support a call for the Govt to use that money to pay the Pensioners Water & Electric Bill.
