Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo (fifth from left) at the press conference.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo today said that the PPP will challenge the government’s decision to revoke the lease of Red House to the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre Inc which was announced yesterday by President David Granger.

Jagdeo made the announcement at a press conference at Freedom House. He described the revocation of the lease as an “unbelievable act” and the product of a “warped mind”.   He said an injunction will be sought from the court against the lease revocation.

Flanked by PPP/C MPs, Jagdeo said the lease revocation is a callous act when one considers the role that the late President Cheddi Jagan played in the pre-independence struggles, the fight for free and fair elections and for the development of Guyana. He said no one should deny Dr Jagan a special place in the hearts of all Guyanese and for generations to be able to follow his works.

Jagdeo contrasted the lease revocation with the manner in which the PPP/C government he headed had handled a freehold title  application by the family of Forbes Burnham for five acres of land across from the Botanical Gardens. Jagdeo noted that this lease had been granted to the family and that the land was eventually sold for a large sum.

Jagdeo charged that the APNU+AFC government was becoming increasingly repressive.

How can someone sell lease land??  Is a lease transferable?  Should it be?  This sounds crazy.

Me thinks it's transferable,my grandparents had 99 yrs leased land which was transferred to their children after their death, also my mom transferred lease land to one of her brothers.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, THE CIA REPORT OF GRANGER:  AN INDIAN HATER AND RACIST PIG. THIS IS BEFYOND ANY DOUBTS THAT THIS MAN IS AS RACIST AS IT GETS, THAT HE IS AN INCOMPETENT BUFFOON AND THAH HIS GNI FILTH HEAD SUPPORTERS ARE NO BETTER!!!

The country needs just one library for its Presidents. All the papers of CBJ private life should be housed at Freedom House. Say what you want about Granger, the man is trying in a limited way to forge a nation, starting with equal respect for every past and present President. Regardless how dispicabe they were, they were Presidents of Guyana.

Totally agreed, too much divisiveness in the homeland.

History has already judged Burnham and Hoyte, they were riggers, who committed fraud against hundred of thousands of Guyanese to become presidents. They must not be allowed to grace any halls which has been set aside for the Late Great Cheddi Jagan.

I think you can sell the rights.

I could understand passing down to family, but selling is another thing.  This would encourage exactly what happened to the 5 acres BJ mentioned above.

There is nothing to challenge. The people said hit the road Jack and don't come back.  The Jagan yard has enough space for PPP supporters to build a separate concrete multiple storey interactive complex to hold the documents and photos. This could become a great education and training tool for PPP youth supporters.

Just recalled, all owners of crown lands which became state lands after Independence, got transport for the lands,my cousin mentioned it.

BJ did that so people can use as collateral for loans.

While the PPP says it intends to challenge the eviction order, officials claiming to represent MOTP landed a few hours ago at the Red House and padlocked the gate with CJRC staff in the building. BJ and other top PPP officials arrived, as did the police who took statements from the MOTP and PPP officials.

Now, in practical terms, from January 1, ie Sunday, the Red House officially belongs to the National Trust whose staff have been ordered to relocate from their present Carmichael St premises. If the PPP/CJRCI fail to remove Dr Jagan's archives from the building, the National Trust will take custody of them.

There is a big change, Prash, which nullifies my comment. Our friend KP posted this: "Cheddi Jagan Research Centre gets interim order against Red House lease revocation By Staff Editor December 30, 2016 6 hours ago 82 The Cheddi Jagan Research Centre Inc today secured a conservatory order against the decision by the government to revoke its lease to the historic Red House. Chief Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards issued the order in Chambers consequent to an ex-parte application in the name of Hydar Ally, Chairman of the Management Committee of the Centre. The order requires the Attorney General (AG), the first-named defendant to give an undertaking that property at the site would not be interfered with. The AG and the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission have been given 21 days to file an affidavit in reply to Ally’s. The matter is returnable for February 20th, 2017."

Gill,

I knew it's not the end of the world regarding the ultimatum set by Granger, there is always avenues to solve issues,Presidential demands differs from landlord and tenant request to vacate.

This is the start, wait till the govt starts with the other tiefin property by the PPP, we'll again hear the gnashing of teeth.

How many jailed so far and how many state assets recovered? Looks like PNC scraping the barrel with the red house lease revocation.  Lets see if they can justify this in court.

To all the shameless katahars who helped install the racist, hapless, incompetent PNC, I hope you are happy that your hero Granger will bulldoze and bury the legacy of Cheddi Jagan!

It is impossible to bulldoze the legacy of Jagan - albeit, in many ways, a deeply flawed legacy and one which resulted in the decimation of East Indians in Guyana. I see you are now a Jaganite. Granger made a major political error: he allowed the bullies to play victims. Granger is too deeply entrenched in his echo chamber to understand these basic principles. Only brown bai KKKs would believe Indians alone should run Guyana. This is a matter best left to the courts. Let the courts decide.

You are and idiot. So I would not argue with you. Your landlord should give U 2 days notice to move from his basement apartment.

That your take, will have to wait and see.

Is it legal to take state property [Red House] and convert  it to a research center for a single politician ??

because that politician lived there while in office, also the building is used for party propaganda.

Django

The Red House should have remained state property... What's wrong in having all the pass president legacy hosting under one roof. Future generations will see all races can live together irrespective of their differences.

When do we start.... today's society don't need the segregation.

Guyanese of all races lives together until election, cause politicians preach divisions.

I live 14 years in a village call Plaisance,if you treat a black man with love and compassion - no one mess with you.

If the PPP need a home by itself... the Jagans have Bel Air.
