PRESS RELEASE

PPP exposes APNU-AFC’s misinformation of results it announces
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has requested from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) a recount of ballots in some areas of our country. This became necessary after it was realized that some of our counting agents were forced to flee some polling places out of fear. While it was declared that voting was generally free and fair, as the counting phase began, some of our agents were intimidated and flee for their own safety.
In addition to this, we have noticed an extremely high number of rejected ballots which we believe may have resulted following the absence of our counting agents in these areas. We believe that in keeping with electoral laws, voter’s intent must be taken into consideration. Also, in some places there was an unusually high turnout of voters which raises suspicion of possible electoral transgression.
The PPP notes the comments made by the APNU-AFC Co-Chair, Mr. Raphael Trotman, who is calling for the recount to be disallowed. Our Party stands firm in this regard.
Our Party is pleased that GECOM has accepted our call for the recount and ask that all be patient until this process in complete. In making this call, we reiterate the need for everyone to remain calm and for GECOM to be allowed GECOM to fulfill its mandate.
Further, it was reported that the PPP did not document various electoral transgression that occurred on elections day. This is far from the truth as a number of emails were sent, and which can be produced to show the contrary.
As you would recall, yesterday President Donald Ramotar disputed the figures released by APNU-AFC with regards to the elections. The PPP repeats that those numbers are very misleading and would only serve to create a false sense of expectation among Opposition supporters. Just to note one example, the Opposition claimed that in Region 6 it received some 23,520 votes as against 30,501 for the PPP.
Our tabulation from the Statements Of Poll shows that for the same Region, the PPP received 39, 597 and the APNU-AFC coalition got 22, 017. While we are cognizant that only GECOM can legally release the official results, we believe that the Opposition misinformation campaign must not be allowed to go unchallenged."

No official numbers are given by GECOM.

From various sources, the unofficial numbers are about 49% for the PPP/C and 51% for APNU cum AFC; with the major results for Region 4-Georgetown and areas, 7-Bartica and areas and 10-MacKenzie and areas which are traditional PNC/APNU strongholds.

Results for major PPP/C strongholds are limited.

We need to wait for the official and final results.

That is bull. The PPP said they won specific areas and noted what was out was  ten and four. They insist they were at an unreachable 30 thousand ahead. That was a lie.

Now they are claiming their people were run off and they believe they have more to the areas they claimed than is stated. Bullox. Last time they not only claimed victory on election night but insisted on a definite majority. They tried to steal that by having Bhuddo submit an erroneous calculation. That was flagged. They then wanted a recount but possibly thought it wise not to do so because the were very close. Now they want a recount hoping to catch up.

Why can't we wait for an official release from GECOM before requesting a recount in certain areas. It seems like both opposition and PPP parties wants to do the work of the GECOM, for just over 500,000 votes it is taking too long to count.

Who the hell counted them in the first place? That they did not publicly announce the count does not mean there was no count. You cannot go back and restart the process. It means you can rig the numbers to get the desired outcome. This is a terrible state of affairs given it seems that SUrijballi has allowed a recount before the declaration of their initial count.

It's not over till the fat lady sings.  The results are razor thin, wait for the official declaration.  The PPP could still pull of a technical victory.  I hope you accept it if they do!

The point is there was a count. SOPs were created and forwarded. Numbers were tabulated. These were supposed to be released. You cannot initiate an amending of  the SOP from a distance when they were counted on the ground. On the ground objections should be made and if not satisfied the representative of the party should refuse to sign them off.

The problem of returning them for amendments without declaring a reason or publishing the number  mean you know how much you need to make or break the elections one way or another.  In  our system a few votes could mean a top up qualifier for a seat.

Jokes aside you do not count until you win. You count declare a count, one side or another object if cause exists, a determination is made and the recount is undertaken in a proper way. With these SOPs going back to be modified means one has no bench mark for what is supposed to be the error and they can count until they win. It takes only a few votes to make a difference. If one has 4500 votes and lost a top up seat by one vote many a reason can be found to create that one vote. We need an official count before a recount. GECOM cannot determine where it needs a recount. That is for the PARTIES to do on publication of a count.
