Following their historic performances when they collected a combined 33-medals inclusive of 19 gold 9 silver 5 bronze and shattered records at the Caribbean, Pan Am and FESUPO levels at the 16th NAPF and 32nd FESUPO Equipped Championships in Orlando, USA earlier this month, attention is not focused on a higher competition.
The same team members that inked their names into the powerlifting history books are aiming to conqueror the world again but this time at the Commonwealth Championships set for September 10-17 in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
Records were set by Carlos Petterson, Demetri Chan, Romario Gonsalves, β€˜Big’ John Edwards, Nairianjan Singh, Andrea Smith and Britny Mack.
Petterson is the current Commonwealth Junior Raw/Classic 93kg Class champion and Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation PRO Dr. Osmond Mack has informed that Petterson broke the Deadlift record three times in Orlando, his first attempt at 300kg second was 317.6kg and 330.0kg respectively.
Petterson’s squat at 280kg did not secure the record because a new record was set at 295kg on 19/6/2017 in Minsk, Belarus at the World Games but he still secured the Total of 760.0kg, a new record total putting him at first place.
Mack stated that he has full confidence in Patterson shattering the Commonwealth records and setting a new deadlift world record next month South Africa.
In the Women’s Sub-Junior 47kg category, Britny Mack achieved a total of five (5) records in the Equipped category whilst setting a new Commonwealth Squat record of 117.5kg and Deadlift of 110.0kg and 115.0kg breaking the record twice.
In Raw/Classic competition, Mack set new Squat records of 95.0kg and 102.5kg, respectively.
Mack has also predicted that Tiniesha β€˜Boss Baby’ Toney (57kg class) was the best Sub-Junior Female and would also set new records in South Africa but has sustained a lower back injury.
Romario Gonsalves (59kg Junior class), who had a Deadlift record at 215kg, saw that being erased with a new mark of 222.5kg at the World Games on July 18th in Minsk, Belarus.
Mack posited that the team for the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in South Africa will again showcase Guyana and make the nation proud with a close eye on setting new records.
Faced with a budget of over 9 Million dollars to make the team’s trip a reality, the GAPF is seeking the support of the all Guyana to ensure the team travels.
Donations can be deposited at Republic Bank A/C #655-219-4 or contact can be made with federation Treasurer, Andrew Austin.
