Police, bandits trade bullets during robbery

[www.inewsguyana.com] A man has been arrested and another at large after they exchanged bullets with police officers subsequent to robbing a taxi driver at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Tuesday, June 16.

According to a press statement from the Guyana Police Force, at about 21:00hrs on Tuesday, taxi driver, Zaheer Khaleel was held up in the Housing Scheme by two men who had hired him, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

 

According to the police, the perpetrators took away the 22-year-old’s cell phone and $10,000 before attempting to make an escape.

 

The escape plans were thwarted by Police ranks who quickly responded to the report and confronted the suspects. During the confrontation there was an exchange of gunfire between the lawmen and the bandits but no one was injured.

 

Police say that one of the suspects was arrested and the stolen cell phone was recovered on his person. The other remains at large.
