This was made widely popular by many Pakistani and Indian singers and composers like Noor Jehan, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sabri Brothers, Wadali Brothers, and mostly by Runa Laila a singer of Bangladesh. It is said that the kalaam/qawwali was adapted from the original prayer by Amir Khusrow and was then modified completely by Bulleh Shah. Apparently, Bulleh Shah gave an entirely different colour to the qawwali and added verses in praise of Hazrat Lal Shabbaz Qalandar. Bulleh Shah's version of the qawwali gives it a large tint of Sindhi culture.

So many others did this one, after many of the Qawallis singers like the Sabri Brothers, Wadali Bros, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan passed away, we had definately seen the Qawalli singing hit a new low, with the advent of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen, it was for a while brought to the fore again, but with Rahat more or less leaning on the Bollywood Filmy Type of songs, seems like Qawalli is heading for a slow death unless of course if we do get some new singers on the horizon.

The poetry is implicitly understood to be spiritual in its meaning, even though the lyrics can sometimes sound wildly secular, or outright hedonistic. The central themes of qawwali are love, devotion and longing (of man for the Divine).

Interestingly very different from the Ghazals, whereby man seeks the affection of his beloved, but naturally Ghazal is about forbidden love.

English Translation: To understand this Qawwali, you need to know a little about the History of the Sufi Saints. Jhoole Lal – A saint from Sindh who as a child was always found on a swing reciting the name of God. Shahbaaz Qalander (Red Falcon) another Sufi Fakir renowned for amazing poetry in love for God.

I love Nusrat singing. I blast it all the time.
