Over 400 elderly persons feted at Botanical Gardens tea party

Over 400 elderly persons were treated to a tea party and concert on Saturday at the Botanical Gardens in Georgetown.

The event was organised by the Social Protection Ministry in collaboration with Commission of the Elderly to commemorate “The Month of the Elderly”. The United Nations had designated this title to the month of October.
Themed “The journey to age equality”, elderly persons from 15 homes across the country were treated to an afternoon of entertainment, food, and talent displayed by the elderly persons themselves.
Speaking with Guyana Times, Administrative Assistant at the Social Protection Ministry, Colleen Roberts, explained that this event sought to recognise the talents, efforts, and contributions all elderly persons of Guyana made. She added that in recognition of the month, there have already been several activities held, and Saturday’s event was the penultimate one. It was followed by an activity in Paramakatoi, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), on Sunday that featured only elderly women and marked the conclusion of the month of activities.
Meanwhile, Social Protection Minister, Amna Ally stated that the elderly group is greatly valued, adding that the Ministry specifically pushed for the tea party so that all senior citizens across Guyana could be recognised, and not just a small group of elderly persons.

She encouraged the public to have respect for the elderly since they have made significant contributions not only to their families but to the country as well. The Minister added that Guyanese must be able to recognise the contributions of this group since they have passed on a lot and there is still much more to be learnt from them.
The invited senior citizens were all decked out in fancy attires while being entertained by the Guyana Police Band.
Among the officials present at Saturday’s tea party was First Lady, Sandra Granger.
