Over 100 cases of seized liquor missing from GRA warehouse; Investigations underway

The Office of the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority has ordered that a full investigation be conducted into the disappearance of several cases of high-priced liquor from the warehouse of the GRA.

The liquor was seized from smugglers but was discovered missing just over two weeks ago. News Source understands that more that 100 cases of the liquor cannot be accounted for and the Commissioner General Khurshid Sattaur wants answers.

The missing cases of liquor may be valued more than $6 Million.

When contacted by News Source on Thursday, Mr. Sattaur confirmed the investigation but could not offer details on the amount of liquor that was missing or the actual cost since the probe is still underway.

He said his office is committed to getting to the bottom of the theft and will review security cameras as well as question security personnel and other staff members who may be able to provide information that is needed.

Sattaur said from time to time, there would be slippages in the system but he intends to ensure that the perpetrators do not go unpunished.

The GRA has been stepping up its campaign against smugglers across the country and has been monitoring the bordering regions more.

This past weekend, a large quantity of smuggled chicken and liquor was seized from an East Coast Demerara man who has long been fingered in alleged smuggling activities. A probe is continuing into that bust.
