One accused in GGMC engineer’s murder complains of remand conditions

RAYON Paddy, one of the three men jointly charged for the murder of Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) engineer, Trevor Abrams in February, on Monday complained that he was forced to endure inhumane conditions for months on remand while awaiting a fixed date for trial.

Paddy, who is facing another murder charge before the court, explained to Magistrate Ann McLennan that he is currently being kept in solitary confinement at the Georgetown Prison, and he might need psychiatric evaluation. The murder accused further explained that he is currently being punished for a crime of which he is innocent.

Nevertheless, he was informed by the magistrate that the report date for the trial for the Abrams murder is scheduled for August 18.

On Monday, April 13, 2015, Rayon Paddy, along with Orin Arthur and Steven Prescott, also known as ‘Assassin,’ was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for Abrams’s murder, which occurred on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

After months of investigation, the police are yet to complete the file and the ballistic report for the gun that was used to kill GGMC engineer Trevor Abrams, while the alleged masterminds are on remand.

According to Police Prosecutor Corporal Bharrat Mangru on the first court appearance, investigations were still in progress into the two matters and the trio was remanded. Now, four months later, the files are still incomplete.

When the magistrate enquired of police prosecutor Sergeant Neville Jeffers about the status of the files, she was told that several statements are outstanding from the police, and he is awaiting the ballistic results of the investigation.

According to reports Abrams, 32, of Lot 131 Samatta Point, East Bank Demerara, was riddled with bullets on February 26, 2015, at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, after heavily armed men ambushed him and opened fire on his vehicle. (Clestine Juan)
