Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir presents certificate to a beneficiary of the Single Parent Training Programme at the graduation ceremony, Region 5

Over 140 youths and single parents were today taken one step closer to realizing their dreams as they collected their certificates after completing several months of training in various life skills, under the National Training Programme For Youth Empowerment (NTPYE) and the National Single Parents Training Programme.

The two programmes which fall under the purview of Board of Industrial Training through the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, over the last decade have provided thousands of youths and single parents with a second opportunity to become marketable through training in several areas including heavy-duty equipment, mechanic, care for elderly, catering, garment construction, and patient care assistant.

Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir, other Ministry and BIT officials at the graduation ceremony in Region Five congratulated the batch of successful youths and single parents.

Minister Nadir urged the graduants to become role models and that they “should always continue to strive to do better than our parents and those who graze the trails before us”.

Chief Executive Officer/Secretary of BIT Geneveieve Blackman addressing Region Five graduants

“After five years, we would have been close to graduating in excess of 5000 young people under NTPYE and BIT…and while today we would have reached that number, I want to give credit to the former Minister of Labour Dr. Dale Bisnauth and His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo,” Minister Nadir said.

This decision, he said that was taken in 2005 by President Jagdeo to launch the NTYPE, continues to bear fruitful results as more are being given the opportunity to develop their potential.

The programme Minister Nadir said which started with a budget of $11M in 2005 has grown over the years to a budget of $145 M in 2011.

In addition, he said that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport graduates over 250 from a nine-month residency programme annually at the Kuru Kuru Training Centre.

The NTPYE, he said like several other programmes including the Community Action Component (CAC) of the Citizens Security Programme, continue to target young people in vulnerable communities.

“The Ministry of Health also has similar programmes…we have every year graduating from Government programmes across the country in excess of 3000 young people with employable skills,” Minister Nadir said.

During his discourse, he also urged them to continue working together for the betterment of their respective communities and their country.

“ The lesson that you have learnt in making yourself available everyday within the last four to six months to complete this programme, that lesson you need to tell children who are in school today about the value of them remaining in school and getting qualified starting with CXC,” Minister Nadir said.

Minister Nadir also informed the graduants of other services being offered by the Ministry of Labour, including the Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA) that has been providing jobs for thousands of Guyanese.

The single parents were also urged to take advantage of the Women of Worth Programme (WOW), an initiative between the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) that affords single parent women the opportunity to access loans ranging from $100,000 to $250,000 to establish and expand small businesses.

With regards to development, Minister Nadir also used the occasion to inform the graduants and their guardians and well wishers about the unprecedented growth in the economy.

“When the economy grows it requires more people to join the workforce…you will also find a greater demand for services,” Minister Nadir said.

Graduants during the training programme were provided with monthly stipends of $4000.

Chief Executive Officer/Secretary of BIT Geneveieve Blackman who was also present at the graduation expressed gratitude to the many trainers for imparting their knowledge onto the trainees.

She also urged the graduants to use the skills to acquire a better life.

Also present was Chairman of BIT, Dr. Dale Bisnauth and Project coordinator Coreen Connelly.
