When a president of a country states on record that he is fed-up with the old people, then anything could happen to the Elderly. It's so sad that this man had to die like this. No doubt he did not want to go out on the streets and beg for his daily bread, but rather earn it by the sweat of his brow. The Old Age Pension is good only for one week. May his soul rest in peace.

I believe you and shame on your PPP for not adquately providing for these seniors.

What can a 90 year old do if he is ever confronted in a break in?

What about your president who stated and it is on record that he is fed-up with the old people?

I was not thinking he knew 90year olds working in Guyana, I thought of where he's residing.
In this case, 90 year olds working in Guyana, yes it could be quite true.
What a bloody shame.

Maybe these are the "working class people" albert constantly speaks about, eh?

Mitwah, why do you used an old man who chose to work to shoot political points? It's an unfortunate situation when someone dies. The man could have had a heart attack and died, and you jumping all over the PPP.

Do you think he chose to work? The guy probably had no relatives willing to send remittances.

I am glad that this upsets you.

Do you agree with the President who stated and it is on record that he is fed-up with the old people ?

Is the pension adequate for our senior citizens?

How does their old age pension compares to Jagdeo's pension package?

This is no norm for any old folks to stay active.

How does their old age pension of $7,500 per month compares to Jagdeo's pension package?

i guess you see it, his choice to work to death or starve to death. Take your pick, right. Great line from a so-called socialist regime. No wonder the USSR, Cuba, China keep their distance. No one seem to know exactly what yoy (PPP) represent.

Why is a 90 year old still working when he should be at home resting?

Can the PPP/C regime bring Guyana any lower than this?

The man was physically fit and vewry active.

Maybe you should take a rest. You need it.

How does his pension compares to Jagdeo's pension package? It's a shame on the PPP/C that he is forced to earn a living.

The killing of Adolphus James is an indictment of our society
By STABROEK STAFF | LETTERS | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

Dear Editor,

The killing of 91-year-old Mr Adolphus James, the Linden security guard while on duty is an indictment of our entire society. It is criminal that a Guyanese of such advanced age had to work a night shift to eke out a subsistence life.

As we Guyanese celebrate and salute a President who has rewarded himself with one of the world’s most generous post-retirement pension packages equivalent to millions of tax-free dollars while still in his forties, let us not forget that the pay which the Jagdeo administration considers adequate for a guard working an eight-hour shift is $800 per shift.

And as the Minister of Human Services, Ms Priya Manickchand and the Minister of Labour, Mr Manzoor Nadir join with the country’s most famous Bishop to celebrate Mr Jagdeo, my hope is that they will spare a moment to reflect on the struggles which Mr James endured until his last moments as he laboured for his living and his life.

Yours faithfully,
Christopher Ram

Slain guard, 91, laid to rest
By STABROEK STAFF | LOCAL | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2011

Slain Linden guard Adolphus James, 91, was laid to rest at the Bamia Cemetery on the Linden Soesdyke Highway yesterday after a simple but emotional service at the Mackenzie United Mission Church, where his family blamed his employer for his death. James, of Yuraballi Street, Retrieve, Mackenzie Linden, was found dead at the back of the Consumers’ Goods Complex building at Linden on September 12, 2011. The discovery was made by a female security guard who went in search of him after not seeing him in the guard hut. It was believed that the elderly security guard might have tripped and hit his head on one of many cements rocks that were at the back of the building, however a post-mortem examination found that he was strangled and died of haemorrhaging in the brain.

Mourners carry the casket with 91-year-old Adolphus James to his final resting place. Inset is a photo of close family members.

β€œMr Forrester I spoke with you and I told you that I was mad with you and I want you to know that I am still mad with you and hope would are able to carry this cross,” said one of the man’s daughters at the funeral service. The family is still to have a closed meeting with the security company boss and intends to engage the police at Linden for information as to the progress of the investigations. Family members said that the security firm cannot run away from responsibility, since they are convinced that the elderly James was left to work the night shift alone.

In a previous interview, owner of the Amazon Security firm Ewart Forrester had said he was surprised at the findings of the post-mortem exam. He added that at the scene, there were no indications that the man might have been murdered. He had also said that the man was accompanied by other guards between the hours of 6 pm and 8 pm and again from some time after midnight to approximately 4 am. Forrester, among others, spoke highly of James. He was described as the father, close friend and inspiration to his colleagues and others whom he came into contact with. Director of the Consumers’ Goods Complex, where the man was working at the time of his demise, said that he was very committed and thorough with his work. β€œReligiously, β€˜Daddy James’ would check every door when he came on duty and if there was anything wrong he would wait until I come in no matter how late to give me the report,” she said.

Despite his age, James was remembered by most persons as agile, with humility and passion for his work that outweighed his younger peers. He was employed with the Amazon Security and Investigation Services for over 18 years up until his death.
