New wave of in-fighting hits AFC

THERE is a new wave of in-fighting within the small Alliance for Change(AFC) party, with similar intensity of the Raphael Trotman /Khemraj Ramjattan leadership brawl a few months ago. With the exit of Prime Ministerial candidate Sheila Holder last week, her vacancy has increased tensions between the various factions in the party.

Last week, the AFC reported that Holder stepped down as Prime Ministerial candidate of the party because of ill –health.

Earlier this year, in May, Guyana Chronicle came in for criticisms from the AFC for its report that ‘’Sheila Holder may fall out of elections race’’. The report was based on an AFC senior insider who is now describing the current acrimonious state of that party.

According to the insider, of the two persons who might be suitable to fill the void, Trotman and Cathy Hughes, none of them is willing to work under Ramjattan, whom they described as ‘too arrogant’.

The party’s faithful believe it is not too late to shift Ramjattan to the Prime Ministerial position and have Trotman return as Presidential Candidate.

The insider is concerned that the party may further mess up its chances at elections with the new wave of in-fighting. Most AFC members believe Ramjattan will cause the party to lose seats at the elections, given the fact that the support base of the party is from the PNCR, and many supporters are turning away from AFC because of his poor leadership style.

Trotman and Ramjattan were in a leadership battle following the failure by the party’s top-brass in June to honour a rotation agreement that would have seen Ramjattan take over as AFC leader.

Sources in the party said Trotman’s faction was insisting that Ramjattan is unsuitable to lead the AFC, while the Ramjattan group was accusing the party’s prime movers of alienation tactics. The AFC has been badly hurt by several bouts of in-fighting, and is trying to salvage its image.

Businessman, Mr. Peter Ramsaroop, who has resigned as AFC Chief Executive Officer, and withdrew his membership of the party, publicly expressed his displeasure at Ramjattan’s leadership.

Trotman is a former senior PNCR member and parliamentarian who defected to form his own party, and Ramjattan is a former senior member of the PPP.

Several arrested for anti-Jagdeo road markings on 'Appreciation Day'
Written by Kwesi Isles Friday, 16 September 2011 13:13

At least three persons have been arrested for a rash of anti-Jagdeo signs which have appeared in the city and its environs as the ‘Friends of Jagdeo’ on Friday prepared to honour the president who is set to demit office by year end. Elections are constitutionally by December 28 but it is anticipated that Guyanese will go to the polls in November with the Guyana Elections Commission saying it will be ready by November 15.

The signs have been painted on the roads at the UG and Railway Embankment Roads junction, in the vicinity of the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue and near Banks DIH at Thirst Park. “For heaven’s sake go Jagdeo,” the one at Turkeyen read. Members of the Guyana Police Force turned up at the scene shortly after Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) and painted over the president’s name.

A private group, including representatives of the trade union movement, religious community and private sector has come together to show its regard for President Bharrat Jagdeo with a tribute scheduled to begin at 3 PM at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. The invitation titled 'A World of Thanks President Jagdeo!' states that the event is "In tribute to the contribution of His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo to the economic, social and political transformation of Guyana."

But not everyone is sending love Jagdeo’s way. The Alliance For Change has dubbed Friday “Day of Shame and Disgrace” and in newspaper ads it has urged people to wear black or hang black banners from their homes, businesses and vehicles to show solidarity against Jagdeo’s rule.

The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) for its part has said that Guyanese have nothing to thank Jagdeo for. “To give him a “World of Thanks [for] the economic, social and political transformation of Guyana” is to look destiny in her face and slap her. For it is clear should we continue along this path the country will implode and the law-abiding face increasing danger,” the body said in a statement Friday. According to the GTUC, it is saying no thanks to Jagdeo for “transforming this society into one where the stench of drugs, corruption, deprivation, violence, hopelessness, crimes, poverty and discrimination are every where.”

The trade union body also drew from Guyana’s late poet laureate Martin Carter to register its displeasure. “This is indeed “the dark time, when all round the land brown beetles crawl about. The shining sun is hidden in the sky…Red flowers bend their heads in awful sorrow…It is the season of oppression, dark metal, and tears. It is the festival of guns, the carnival of misery. Everywhere the faces of men are strained and anxious,” the GTUC quoted.

Some 15,000 persons are expected to descend on Providence where there is expected to be a paratrooping display by members of the Guyana Defence, a Gymkhana by the Guyana Police Force and a large number of cultural acts, all local, and video and personal messages. Several motorcades from different parts of the country will culminate at the stadium while free ferry service for persons travelling from the Essequibo Coast have been organised.

GR your recent behavior jhas convinced me that the Chronicle and the PPP bloggers are write. Usually your response has levels of rationality. Now you seem confued. Specific accusations ahve bene made. Rather than furnishing evidence to refute these claims your respond like SJ.

Well incumbency, race voting and the feeling that the opposition parties are weak and poorly organized and infighting all but guarantee a PPP victory. The only open questions will be by how much and how few people will bother to vote.

That means that Burnham should have arrested the PPP because they were infamous for graffitti in the 1970s.

That such a marking can be placed at this junction, clearly indicates how far down the political support slope the PPP now finds itself. This used to be a strong PPP area, and no other party supporter or accolyte in the past would ever attempt any graffiti in these environs for the sake of a good cut ass if caught.

Well...we know the insider is dead wrong because Raphael Trotman is now the Prime Minister candidate. Now...the tiny minds of the PPP can only focus on small things.

Now...speaking about in fighting. Jagdeo = Ramotar fixed the party election and alienated the old guys like Nagamootoo, Chandrapal, etc. GAWU and Jagdeo = Ramotar don't get along. Now that is infighting you you PPP simpletons.

PPP/PNC had an arrangement to carve up and rule Guyana. Any threat to that was handled, remember Rodney. Now the AFC is that new threat.
