Moses Nagamootoo

Today is Nomination Day when all speculations will be put to rest as it relates to who will be contesting the 2011 General and Regional Elections and just who will be on each of the Candidates List for each party.

This newspaper has been reliably informed that Moses Nagamootoo, the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPP/C) longstanding member and up to three days ago, a PPP Central Executive member will be on the Alliance for Change’s Candidates List.

Nagamootoo, on Tuesday last, tendered his resignation from the PPP/C but did not indicate whether he would be accepting the overtures that were made by the AFC.

The PPP/C stalwart will today along with Presidential Candidate for the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan and Prime Ministerial Candidate Raphael Trotman, present their party’s Candidates List of which he will be a part.

Nagamootoo, 64, at the time of tendering his resignation had declined to say on which political platform he would be standing ahead of the November 28 polls.

He was clear, though, that his political future would be with any movement that wants to get rid of the “winner takes all” system of governance.

“I have always been committed to the formation in this country of broad coalitions that work for common goals and I believe someday this country will see and must see a government of national unity,” Nagamootoo said at the Georgetown office from which he runs his legal practice.

Valerie Garrido-Lowe

Meanwhile in another development the Valerie Garrido-Lowe faction of The United Force has slipped into the camp of the AFC and will be contesting the election with the allegiance.

The AFC yesterday reported that The United Force, under the leadership of Valerie Garrido-Lowe, “a strong woman long admired by the AFC, has joined forces with the Alliance for Change and will be contesting the November 28 General and Regional Elections as a united alliance.”

The party stated that the decision was made at an Executive Meeting held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 and an agreement was finalized at a high level meeting on Tuesday evening at the AFC’s headquarters.

The party’s statement says, “The United Force recognizes and states that the Alliance for Change Political Party is the only Party that has the same and similar policies and programmes for the betterment and upliftment of all Guyanese.

“Hence, a partnership at this time, when our brothers and sisters of this beautiful country, need our support at every level in their lives, we will not disappoint them. We have listened to them and now we have respectfully answered their call.”

But the Manzoor Nadir faction of TUF yesterday vehemently denied that the party was in any alliance with the AFC.

In a statement issued to the media it was pointed out that the Executive members of TUF “wish to advise the general public that TUF has not joined with the Alliance for Change to contest the November 28 General and Regional Elections.”

That faction of the party stated that “it will be contesting these elections with a full slate of candidates in the National and Regional Elections.”

“We emphatically state that Ms. Valerie Garrido-Lowe has been expelled from The United Force as a member, Leader and Presidential Candidate. Ms. Garrido-Lowe’s injunction against members of the Executive was dismissed by the Full Court (Decision 72/APL) which cleared the way for the decision taken by the TUF executives on September 1, 2011 to expel Ms. Valerie Garrido-Lowe from The United Force and to prevent her from performing in any capacity representing The United Force.”

The Manzoor Nadir faction of the party also stated that at its Conference held on May 29 the membership passed a resolution to contest these elections independently.

“Garrido-Lowe has no authority to carry the united force into any arrangement with any group.”

While not specifically who, the party said that, “TUF has also decided on a Presidential Candidate, a person who is a prominent member of civil society.”

The GECOM Code of Conduct was recently signed and delivered to the Chairman of GECOM. TUF urges all parties to follow its example and sign the Code of Conduct and look forward to a free, fair, transparent and impartial election.
