Guyana’s National Club Basketball Championship, Mecca, will bounce off on December 1st this year, and is projected the final tip off on Boxing Day. Sixteen clubs will be battling for the biggest incentive that the competition has ever seen a cash prize of $1.2 million for the winners.

Mecca 2017 will feature 7 clubs each from the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) and the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA), while two clubs from the less active Berbice association will be included. Defending champions Raiders of Linden and runners up Bounty Colts of Georgetown will be ranked 1 and 2 respectively.
Initially, it was noted that teams that don’t have previous tournament ranking will be selected based on their rank within their association and, now, a playoff is slated for this weekend beginning tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) to decide the final teams that will qualify to represent the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) at this year’s 2017 Mecca.
Two games will be contested tonight at the CASH from 19:00hrs with University of Guyana Trojans squaring off against Kobras in the first match. The second game, which begins at 21:00hrs, will see Pepsi Sonics locking horns with Republic Bank Nets.
Tomorrow night at the same venue, the winners of tonight will clash to determine which unranked 1st division club in GABA will join the National Club Basketball Championship, Mecca four.
The tournament will be contested at three venues, the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Vrymen’s Erven in Berbice and the Mackenzie Sports Club in Linden. From the quarterfinal stage all matches will be played at the CASH.
