MARCH Is COLORECTAL CANCER Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or large bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. With 655,000 deaths worldwide per year, it is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy

Who is at risk of developing colorectal cancer?

The exact causes of colorectal cancer are not known. However, studies have shown that certain factors are linked to an increased chance of developing this disease, including the following:

Age
Colorectal cancer is more likely to occur as people get older. Although this disease can occur at any age, most people who develop colorectal cancer are over age 50.

Polyps
Polyps are abnormal growths that protrude from the inner wall of the colon or rectum. They are relatively common in people over age 50. Most polyps are benign (noncancerous), but experts believe that the majority of colorectal cancers develop in polyps known as adenomas. Detecting and removing these growths may help prevent colorectal cancer. The procedure to remove polyps is called a polypectomy.

Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to develop polyps. Familial adenomatous polyposis, or FAP, is a rare, inherited condition in which hundreds of polyps develop in the colon and rectum. Because individuals with this condition are extremely likely to develop colorectal cancer, they are often treated with surgery to remove the colon and rectum in an operation called a colectomy. Rectum-sparing surgery may also be an option. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an anti-inflammatory drug, celecoxib, for the treatment of FAP. Doctors may prescribe this drug in combination with surveillance and surgery to manage FAP.

Personal history
A person who has already had colorectal cancer is at an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer a second time. Also, research studies have shown that some women with a history of ovarian, uterine, or breast cancer have a higher than average chance of developing colorectal cancer.

Family history
Close relatives (parents, siblings, or children) of a person who has had colorectal cancer are somewhat more likely to develop this type of cancer themselves, especially if the family member developed the cancer at a young age. If many family members have had colorectal cancer, the chances increase even more.

Ulcerative colitis or Crohn colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the lining of the colon. Crohn colitis (also called Crohn disease) causes chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, most often of the small intestine (the part of the digestive tract that is located between the stomach and the large intestine). People who have ulcerative colitis or Crohn colitis may be more likely to develop colorectal cancer than people who do not have these conditions.

Diet
Some evidence suggests that the development of colorectal cancer may be associated with high dietary consumption of red and processed meats and low consumption of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Researchers are exploring what role these and other dietary components play in the development of colorectal cancer.

Exercise
Some evidence suggests that a sedentary lifestyle may be associated with an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. In contrast, people who exercise regularly may have a decreased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Also see the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Fact Sheet Physical Activity and Cancer: Questions and Answers at http://www.cancer.gov/cancerto...physical-activity-qa on the Internet.

Smoking
Increasing evidence from epidemiologic studies suggests that cigarette smoking, particularly long-term smoking, increases the risk of colorectal cancer.

What is screening, and why is it important?

Screening is checking for health problems before they cause symptoms. Colorectal cancer screening can detect cancer; polyps; nonpolypoid lesions, which are flat or slightly depressed areas of abnormal cell growth; and other conditions. Nonpolypoid lesions occur less often than polyps, but they can also develop into colorectal cancer.

If colorectal cancer screening reveals a problem, diagnosis and treatment can occur promptly. In addition, finding and removing polyps or other areas of abnormal cell growth may be one of the most effective ways to prevent colorectal cancer development. Also, colorectal cancer is generally more treatable when it is found early, before it has had a chance to spread.

What methods are used to screen people for colorectal cancer?

Health care providers may suggest one or more of the following tests for colorectal cancer screening:

Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
This test checks for hidden blood in fecal material (stool). Currently, two types of FOBT are available. One type, called guaiac FOBT, uses the chemical guaiac to detect heme in stool. Heme is the iron-containing component of the blood protein hemoglobin. The other type of FOBT, called immunochemical FOBT, uses antibodies to detect human hemoglobin protein in stool (13–15). Studies have shown that FOBT, when performed every 1 to 2 years in people ages 50 to 80, can help reduce the number of deaths due to colorectal cancer by 15 to 33 percent (13–15).

Sigmoidoscopy
In this test, the rectum and lower colon are examined using a lighted instrument called a sigmoidoscope. During sigmoidoscopy, precancerous and cancerous growths in the rectum and lower colon can be found and either removed or biopsied. Studies suggest that regular screening with sigmoidoscopy after age 50 can help reduce the number of deaths from colorectal cancer (14). A thorough cleansing of the lower colon is necessary for this test.

Colonoscopy
In this test, the rectum and entire colon are examined using a lighted instrument called a colonoscope. During colonoscopy, precancerous and cancerous growths throughout the colon can be found and either removed or biopsied, including growths in the upper part of the colon, where they would be missed by sigmoidoscopy. However, it is not yet known for certain whether colonoscopy can help reduce the number of deaths from colorectal cancer. A thorough cleansing of the colon is necessary before this test, and most patients receive some form of sedation.

Virtual colonoscopy (also called computerized tomographic colonography)
In this test, special x-ray equipment is used to produce pictures of the colon and rectum. A computer then assembles these pictures into detailed images that can show polyps and other abnormalities. Because it is less invasive than standard colonoscopy and sedation is not needed, virtual colonoscopy may cause less discomfort and take less time to perform. As with standard colonoscopy, a thorough cleansing of the colon is necessary before this test. Whether virtual colonoscopy can reduce the number of deaths from colorectal cancer is not yet known.

Double contrast barium enema (DCBE)
In this test, a series of x-rays of the entire colon and rectum are taken after the patient is given an enema with a barium solution and air is introduced into the colon. The barium and air help to outline the colon and rectum on the x-rays. Research shows that DCBE may miss small polyps. It detects about 30 to 50 percent of the cancers that can be found with standard colonoscopy.

Digital rectal exam (DRE)
In this test, a health care provider inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for abnormal areas. DRE allows examination of only the lower part of the rectum. It is often performed as part of a routine physical examination.
Scientists are still studying colorectal cancer screening methods, both alone and in combination, to determine how effective they are. Studies are also under way to clarify the potential risks, or harms, of each test. See Question 5 for a table outlining some of the advantages and disadvantages, including potential harms, of specific colorectal cancer screening tests.

"With all I've learned over these years of research, if I were asked to design a diet today that promoted the development of cancer to the maximum, I couldn't improve on our present diet!" - Dr Richard Beliveau (*Meat, dairy, high levels of refined sugar and saturated fat, low levels of omega-3 and insufficient intake of fruit and vegetables)

Farmer Francis Cockram is not the sort of person you would call a crank. Six foot three, his face weathered by years on the land...When Mr. Cockram was told he had liver cancer and only six months to live, he felt he had nothing to lose in giving alternative medicine a chance. That was in May 1992. More than two years later, he is very much alive and working on the farm.

NHS doctors are mystified. A recent scan showed that the 68 year-old farmer's liver is now clear of cancer.

Mr. Cockram's homeopath in Tiverton told him he could fight the disease by going on a strict diet - eating plenty of fruit, raw vegetables and cereals and drinking nothing but bottled water.(Western Morning News 14th November 1992)

Full English Cancer

The traditional English breakfast has long suffered a reputation for being 'a heart attack on a plate' with its high fat and calorie content.

Now those who still regularly enjoy tucking into a fry-up have something else to worry about - a 63% higher risk of bowel cancer. The evidence is strong enough that we should avoid eating such food as much as possible, said the World Cancer Research Fund.
The extra calories can also lead to obesity, which is linked to many types of cancer and heart disease.

According to the charity, there is convincing scientific evidence that excess body fat is linked to six types of cancer, including bowel cancer and breast cancer... this is for me..have to pay attenion.

Experts believe that - after not smoking - maintaining a healthy weight is the most important factor in helping avoid suffering from the disease. The WRCF warned that eating 150g of processed meat a day - equivalent to about two sausages and three rashers of bacon - increases bowel cancer risk by 63%.

Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser for the WRCF, said," For some people, having a fry-up with bacon and sausages might seem like a good way to start the day. But if you are doing this regularly, then you are significantly increasing your risk of bowel cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in the UK."

"Only a third of people are aware of the link between processed meat and cancer."

"This means two-thirds are not in a position to make an informed choice about how much of it they eat."He warned that it is a simple matter of the more processed meat a person eats, the higher the risk.

Professor Wiseman said," This is not a question of all or nothing. For example, if you eat 150g of it a day, then you will be incresing your bowel cancer risk by about two-thirds. But if you only eat 50g a day - roughly the equivalent of a sausage - then you will be increasing your risk by about a fifth. As well as the processed meat increasing the risk of bowel cancer, fry-ups also tend to be high in calories."

"We recommend people limit consumption of high calorie, or energy-dense, foods because eating them makes you more likely to gain weight.""This is important because there is convincing evidence that excess body fat increases the risk of six types of cancer."

Professor Wiseman said scientists estimate that about a third of cancers could be prevented by eating healthily, taking regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. In terms of overall risk, the chances of developing bowel cancer are one in 18 for men and 1 in 20 for women in the UK. - Daily Mail 26th August 2008

SUCCESSFUL MIRACLE CURES

Last night it emerged that Dirk Benedict (one of the stars of the cult television programme 'The A-Team') refused all medical help and surgery when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which threatened to cut short his acting career.

Instead, he told alarmed family members and friends, "I'm going away for a while - to cure myself."

He shut himself away from the world for six months in a rented cottage in New Hampshire, where he lived on a macrobiotic diet and spent virtually every day meditating.

Against almost impossible odds, Benedict, now 61, returned to Hollywood six months later - completely cured. A friend said, "There wasn't a trace of the cancer in his body. Somehow, he came home in better health than anyone has seen him." - Sunday Express 7th January 2007

"The data from the China Project suggest that what we have come to consider as 'normal' illnesses of aging are really not normal. In fact, these findings indicate that the vast majority, perhaps 80-90% of all cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and other forms of degenerative illness can be prevented, at least until very old age, simply by adopting a plant-based diet." - Dr. T. Colin Campbell Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry, Cornell University.

Brave Ray Hughes has beaten cancer - on a diet of grapes and cranberry juice.

Doctors told Ray, 57, he would be lucky to survive a year after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Few with the disease survive because there are no early symptoms. But a biopsy has shown Ray, of Dudley, West Midlands, now has no cancerous cells in his body.
The father of one said, "My doctor calls me a walking miracle and I'm looking to the future with new hope."

"During the time I ate a lot of red grapes and cranberry juice and I think that helped me."

EPIC - SCIENTIFIC STUDY

A major scientific study has found fresh evidence linking red and processed meat and bowel cancer, scientists say. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) looked at 500,000 people across Europe over 10 years. Bowel cancer risk was a third higher for those who regularly ate over two 80g portions of red or processed meat a day, compared to less than one a week.

EPIC's study is reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Since it began, 1,330 people have developed bowel cancer. The study also found a low fibre diet increased the risk of bowel cancer. Lead researcher Professor Shelia Bingham, of the MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit in Cambridge, said : "People have suspected for some time that high levels of red and processed meat increase risk of bowel cancer, but this is one of the largest studies worldwide and the first from Europe of this type to show a strong relationship." -

High doses of Vitamin D can reduce the risk of developing some common cancers by as much as 50%, US scientists claim. Researchers reviewed 63 old studies and found that the vitamin could reduce the chances of developing breast, ovarian and colon cancer, and others...The 'natural' form of vitamin D, called D3, is normally produced in the skin after exposure to sunlight, but it is also obtained from food...The research, done at the University of California in San Diego, looked at the relationship between blood levels of vitamin D and cancer risk.

Survival rates for Afro-Caribbean people with breast, colon, prostate and ovarian cancers are worse than for white people, possibly because dark skins are not as good at making vitamin D, the researchers said. The papers reviewed, published worldwide between 1966 and 2004, included 30 investigations of colon cancer, 13 of breast cancer, 26 of prostate cancer and 7 of ovarian cancer.

Scientists say analysis showed that, for at least some cancers, the vitamin D factor could not be ignored. Taking 1,000 iu - or 25 micrograms - of the vitamin daily could lower an individual's cancer risk by 50% in colon cancer, and by 30% in breast and ovarian cancer, they said.

The study acknowledged large doses of vitamin D should be treated with caution. More than 2,000 iu - 50 micrograms - a day can lead to the body absorbing too much calcium, possibly damaging the liver and kidneys.

Professor Cedric Garland, who led the review study, said, "A preponderence of evidence, from the best observational studies the medical world has to offer...has led to the conclusion that public health action is needed."
Professor Garland warned that sun exposure had its own concerns.

"Dark-skinned people, however, may need more exposure to produce adequate amounts of vitamin D, and some fair-skinned people shouldn't try to get any vitamin D from the sun. The easiest and most reliable way of getting the appropiate amount is from food and a daily supplement." - BBC News 28th December 2005

BROCCOLI JUICE

A cancer patient credits his morning glass of broccoli juice with halting the disease. Ray Wiseman's claim has prompted more research into the vegetable's healing powers.

Doctors told Mr. Wiseman they did not expect him to survive, when they diagnosed him 5 years ago. But today scans show that his cancer has stopped spreading - vastly improving his chances of a recovery.

The grandfather, 79, puts his health down to the tumbler of broccoli juice that his wife prepares for him each day. Mr. Wiseman, who lives in Braunstone, Leicestershire, said ," I take the juice every day. I know its done me good. I suppose it would be the same for everybody." His wife, Joan, 72, started giving him the juice after a friend told her about the healing power of green vegetables. For each half tumbler dose she combines a head of broccoli with some apples and carrots to improve the taste. She said," We believe my husband's incredible luck is down to broccoli. I hope our experience can help other sufferers."

Recent medical studies have highlighted the possible cancer-beating powers of broccoli. British scientists at the Institute of Food Research found that men who ate one daily portion had altered gene activity in their prostates, suggesting that the chemicals in the vegetable might be able to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

According to a report published in the British Journal of Cancer in 2006, natural chemicals found in certain vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, can enhance DNA repair in cells, which could help stop them becoming cancerous...Broccoli is rich in vitamin C and has properties that boost the human immune systems that fight viruses, bacteria and cancer -
Daily Mail 21st July 2008.

NB: If juicing, use only raw broccoli. If cooking the broccoli, the best method is to steam it as studies have found that boiling broccoli can reduce its anti-cancer compounds. In both cases use only organic broccoli.

Laetrile / Vitamin B17 Treatment For Cancer

How It Works
Laetrile (i.e. amygdalin or Vitamin B17) therapy is one of the most popular and best known alternative cancer treatments. It is very simple to use and is very effective if used in high enough doses and if the product is of high quality and if it is combined with an effective cancer diet and key supplements (in other words, you need to do your homework to maximize its benefits).

Laetrile works by killing cancer cells and building the immune system to fend off future outbreaks of cancer. It uses two different methods for killing cancer cells. It involves a strict diet (as do all cancer treatments) and several supplements.

How to Obtain Laetrile or Vitamin B17
The FDA has made the purchase of laetrile supplements effectively impossible, even though it is a perfectly natural and safe supplement. In order for a doctor to use laetrile supplements, they or their patient must "confess" to the FDA that the doctor is using laetrile in their practice. In other words, laetrile supplements are effectively illegal because no doctor wants to admit they are using laetrile. Thus, if you illegally buy laetrile supplements, how do you insure you are buying it from a highly trusted source? This seems like an oxymoron.

Having said that, there are sources of laetrile pills. However, most people take laetrile in the form of apricot kernels. In the middle of a peach or apricot is a hard shell. If you break open the hard shell with a "nut cracker," pliers or hammer, you will find a small seed/kernel in the middle that looks like an almond. However, it is much softer than an almond and certainly does not taste like an almond. It is this seed that is rich in natural laetrile.

If you search for "apricot kernels" (use the quotes) on Google you will be able to find a lot of vendors of apricot kernels. Be advised, however, that apricot kernel sites cannot legally make any claims about laetrile being used to treat cancer.

Most experts will recommend a daily dose of apricot kernels from between 24 kernels a day up to 40 kernels a day, spread throughout the day. For a person in remission, 16 apricot kernals a day should be used as a minimum.

Because I do not like any form of dehydration, especially if artificial heat is applied (it can affect the bioavailability of the laetrile molecule), I like apricot kernels sold still in the shell. Yes, it is extra work to break open the shell for each kernel, but you KNOW the kernel has not been dehydrated. The vendor "Our Father's Farm" will, on special request, sell apricot kernels still in the shell (see the link below).

Other things rich in laetrile are millet grain and buckwheat grain. Breads made with these grains, however, generally do not contain a high percentage of millet or buckwheat or else they would be too hard.

Also, the seeds of berry plants, such as red raspberries and black raspberries are rich in laetrile. Red raspberries also have a second cancer killer in their seeds: Ellagic Acid, a phenolic. About four dozen foods have Ellagic Acid, but Red Raspberries have the highest concentration. Strawberries also have Ellagic Acid.

This means that when you buy berry jelly, make sure you buy preserves that have the seeds. Basically, the seeds of any fruit, except citrus fruits, have laetrile. My wife eats apples from the bottom up, meaning she eats the seeds and always has. This is a good habit to get into - I picked up the habit years ago.

Of course, apricot kernels are the best source of laetrile. Those who do not yet have cancer might want to plant a few apricot or peach trees in their back yard for a long term source of laetrile. The kernels can be frozen while still in the shell.

The Dr. Philip Binzel list of foods that contain laetrile include: apricot kernels, peach kernels, grape seeds, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, bean sprouts, lima beans and macadamia nuts (to name but a few).

If you live outside of the U.S. and are able to obtain laetrile pills, it is important to take them with natural water on an empty stomach and to not eat or drink anything for one hour after taking the pills.

The FDA claims that laetrile is toxic. This is an absolute lie. Read the first chapter of Alive and Well (which is online and is linked to below) to see how absurd the FDA claim is.

A few basic 'Rules of Thumb' as a preventative measure for cancer and other diseases:

1. Avoid, or at eat sparingly of red meats and fat. Instead eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

2. Maintain a blood alkalization of a least 7PH. The PH of a healthy new born is about 7.365. Any time we allow our PH to fall below 7, we are inviting trouble.
3. Keep your body properly hydrated. Rule of thumb is for every pound of body weight we should be drinking one ounce of water per day- more for physically demanding task and hot climate.

4 Maintain 'regularity' Again the golden rule is one in one out. Reportedly when the actor John Wayne died he had over 55 Lbs. of fecal matter stucked in his colo-rectal cavity. If we eat and drink sensibly, there is no need for laxative or harsh purgative.

5. Exercise regularly, be moderate, and avoid stressful and toxic situations.

THE SOUR SOP Natural Cancer KILLER - 10,000 times stronger than Chemo and more.....

How many people died in vain while this billion-dollar drug maker concealed the secret of the miraculous Graviola tree?

If there ever was a single example that makes it dramatically clear why the existence of Health Sciences Institute is so vital to Americans like you, it's the incredible story behind the Graviola tree.

The truth is stunningly simple: Deep within the Amazon Rainforest grows a tree that could literally revolutionize what you, your doctor, and the rest of the world thinks about cancer treatment and chances of survival. The future has never looked more promising.

Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may be possible to...

1. Attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss
2. Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections
3. Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment
4. Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life

The source of this information is just as stunning: It comes from one of America 's largest drug manufacturers, the fruit of over 20 laboratory tests conducted since the 1970's! What those tests revealed was nothing short of mind numbing... Extracts from the tree were shown to:

1. Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer.

2. The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug!

3. What's more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the Graviola tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells. It does not harm healthy cells!

The amazing anti-cancer properties of the Graviola tree have been extensively researched--so why haven't you heard anything about it? If Graviola extract is as half as promising as it appears to be--why doesn't every single oncologist at every major hospital insist on using it on all his or her patients?

The spine-chilling answer illustrates just how easily our health--and for many, our very lives(!)--are controlled by money and power.

Graviola--the plant that worked too well

One of America 's biggest billion-dollar drug makers began a search for a cancer cure and their research centered on Graviola, a legendary healing tree from the Amazon Rainforest.

Various parts of the Graviola tree--including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds--have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. Going on very little documented scientific evidence, the company poured money and resources into testing the tree's anti-cancerous properties--and were shocked by the results. Graviola proved itself to be a cancer-killing dynamo.

But that's where the Graviola story nearly ended.

The company had one huge problem with the Graviola tree--it's completely natural, and so, under federal law, not patentable. There's no way to make serious profits from it.

It turns out the drug company invested nearly seven years trying to synthesize two of the Graviola tree's most powerful anti-cancer ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the Graviola so potent, they'd be able to patent it and make their money back. Alas, they hit a brick wall. The original simply could not be replicated. There was no way the company could protect its profits--or even make back the millions it poured into research.

As the dream of huge profits evaporated, their testing on Graviola came to a screeching halt. Even worse, the company shelved the entire project and chose not to publish the findings of its research!

Luckily, however, there was one scientist from the Graviola research team whose conscience wouldn't let him see such atrocity committed. Risking his career, he contacted a company that's dedicated to harvesting medical plants from the Amazon Rainforest and blew the whistle.

Miracle unleashed

When researchers at the Health Sciences Institute were alerted to the news of Graviola, they began tracking the research done on the cancer-killing tree. Evidence of the astounding effectiveness of Graviola--and its shocking cover-up--came in fast and furious...

1. The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that Graviola's "leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells." Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal report and never released to the public...

2. Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, yet no double-blind clinical trials--the typical benchmark mainstream doctors and journals use to judge a treatment's value--were ever initiated...

3. A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at "10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin..."

4. The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

5. A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers...

Graviola, also called Brazilian pawpaw, soursop, and guanaba, in addition to numerous other names, refers to a particular tree or its fruit.

The fruit is green and heart shaped, and about six to eight inches (15.24-20.32 cm) in diameter. The tree is found in South America and on numerous tropical islands and grows best in rainforest climates.

The pulp of the fruit is popular in juices, sherbets, and smoothies, and exhibits notes of tangy and sweet. It can also be peeled and eaten, though some find the taste alone too sour. As a fruit, graviola may not prove exceptional, but it certainly has an extended history of use in ancient and now modern herbal remedies.

In early times, the leaves of the graviola were used for tea to reduce swelling of the mucus membranes (catarrh) or to treat liver disease. The black seeds were often crushed and used as a vermifuge. All parts of the tree might be ground and used as a sedative or as an anti-convulsant. The fruit was used to reduce joint pain, to treat heart conditions, as a sedative, to induce labor, or to reduce coughing or flu symptoms.

Soursop Green Tea

Soursop Green Tea is green tea without the bitter after taste. It's wonderfully fragrant in a citrus kind of way, and tastes as good as it smells. It's Sri Lankan green tea, but the addition of soursop is the X factor. It's a type of custard apple which originated in the Americas, and is now common right through Asia and the sub-continent.

The West Indies hold soursop in awe. They use infusions of soursop leaves for blood pressure, fever, diabetes, and indigestion. Whilst all those green tea antioxidants are doing you lots of good, the calming effects of the additional soursop extracts makes for a beautiful calming sleeping aide.

This tea has traveled all the way from Sri Lanka, where it's produced by premium tea producers Mlesna.

BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer has been with us for centuries.

The ancient Egyptians were the first to recognise breast cancer. A papyrus dating from 2000BC describes the disease and early attempts at cutting out the tumour.

Contrary to popular belief, breast cancer is not one disease. Experts believe there to be between 25-30 variants.

"A few women are so terrified of breast cancer, as their mother and sometimes grandmother and other relatives died of this disease, they have their breasts removed as a precaution. My mother died of breast cancer - but I would never undergo such radical surgery unless I actually had cancer."

"Our inherited genes control the structure and function of our body but if our genes stay healthy then our body stays healthy. If you live a healthy lifestyle, you can change which genes are expressed. In other words if your parents and grandparents died of heart attacks or cancers, you may have a pre-disposition for heart problems and cancer, but if you live a different lifestyle and eat healthier foods, you can change the chemistry within the body - you don't have to suffer just because they did. Genes are repairable and alterable - they adjust to our environment and state of mind" - Hazel Courteney

Helpful Hints (For avoiding breast cancer)

1. *Examine your breasts at least once a month. If you find even the hint of anything unusual or any type of lump, see your doctor immediately. Remember the earlier any problems are detected the greater your chance of a complete cure. [ N.B. If you do find a lump, don't panic. 9 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous.]

2. *Avoid wearing a bra for too much of the day. Women who wear a tight fitting bra for 14 hours a day or longer are 50% more likely to develop breast cancer. At the very least find yourself a comfortable loose fitting bra that doesn't block lymph drainage.

3.*Exercise should be taken on a regular basis as this helps reduce stress and strengthens our immune system, making us less susceptible to disease.

4. *Always use natural deodorants such as Pit Rok or a tea tree oil based deodorant. Remember your skin is your largest organ and chemicals in creams and deodorants are absorbed into the body.

5. *Breast cancer is more common in people who are overweight and obese - control your weight.

6. *High stress levels are associated with breast cancer - make sure you get plenty of exercise, which reduces the tendency towards stress. Make some time for proper relaxation.

In a 1994 study of 121 women with breast cancer, those in more advanced stages whose breast cancer had spread to their lymph nodes showed the lowest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the breast tissue. After 31 months, the 20 women who had developed metastases had significantly lower levels of these EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids) than those who didn't. Another study out of Boston University using the same type of tissue profiles that were used in the breast cancer study demonstrated that patients with coronary artery disease likewise had, low levels of EFAs. - Dr. Robert Willner M.D.

The fact that breast irradiation increases the risk of heart disease is not a new finding. Starting in the late 1960's, it became known that, after receiving adjuvant radiation to prevent breast cancer recurrence, more women than expected were dying of heart disease, sometimes decades after their initial surgery. It took brilliant medical detective work to prove that this apparently successful use of radiation therapy was also the cause of many cardiac deaths. (Fajardo 2001) So many women were dying of the long-term adverse effects, that it more or less counterbalanced any survival benefit from the treatment itself.

Radiation is a classic two-edged sword. It does substantially reduce the risk of recurrences of breast cancer in the irradiated field. But this comes at the price of an increased risk of damage to the heart, especially when the internal mammary lymph node chains are irradiated or when the patient is a smoker. Patients and their physicians need to carefully weigh up benefits and risks before agreeing to this or any other potentially toxic treatments. - Ralph Moss ('Big Blow To Radiation Therapy For Breast Cancer')

"The animals were genetically programmed to get breast cancer and about 80 - 90% of them normally get spread of the cancer from the breast to the lungs which is a common route in humans, also for how people die of breast cancer, and instead when they gave the animals Laetrile by injection only 10 - 20% of them got lung metasteses. And these facts were verified by many people, including the pathology department." - Ralph Moss

Breast Cancer and Alcohol:

Women who have just two alcoholic drinks a day massively increase their risk of developing breast cancer, scientists warned yesterday.
Even as little as two small glasses of wine daily can fuel a tumour, doubling its size in a matter of weeks - Daily Express 1st May 2007

Pamela Goldberg, Chief Executive Breast Cancer Campaign, said "A recent survey carried out for Breast Cancer Campaign by Ipsos MORI showed that less than ten per cent of women knew that a diet high in saturated fat and high alcohol consumption increased the chances of developing breast cancer, which was their biggest fear."

How olive oil can help in breast cancer fight

Olive oil contains tumour-killing chemicals that may help us win the war against breast cancer, scientists said last night. Substances discovered in the oil have stunned researchers with their ability to fight the most aggressive form of the disease.

Their study has shown the substances, found in the premium, extra virgin variety, make breast tumour cells self-destruct. The cancer-killing effects of the chemicals, called lignans and secoiridoids, could explain the ability of the Mediterranean diet to cut a woman's risk from the disease which strikes about 45,000 Britons a year. Their anti-cancer effect is so potent that the researchers from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Spain now plan to use extra virgin olive oil to develop a new class of anti-breast cancer drugs.

The substances work in a similar way to the drug Herceptin, by "drastically" cutting levels of the Her2 protein, a major factor in the growth of the most aggressive form of the disease, Her2 -positive breast cancer.
Lead investigator Dr. Javier Menendez said , "Our findings reveal for the first time that these chemicals in extra virgin olive oil drastically suppress the cancer gene Her2 in human breast cancer cells."

He said the findings added to recent evidence that the ability of the Mediterrean diet to fight breast cancer had been under-estimated. Dr Menendez added: "We suggest these chemicals might provide a safe platform for the design of new anti-breast cancer drugs." - Daily Express 22nd December 2008
