“I DID not break the place, the place been done bruck so I just took the things,” were the words of 30-year-old Leonard Shaw, when he appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday, November 15, 2019.

Shaw pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that, between November 12 and 13, 2019, at Charlotte and Alexander Streets, he broke and entered the dwelling house of David Coates and stole a toilet bowl set, valued at $27,000 and a receiver sink, valued at $15,000.

According to police prosecutor Sanj Singh, on the day in question, the virtual complainant secured his home and went to bed.
However, in the wee hours of the morning he was awakened by a loud noise. Upon checking, he saw the defendant exiting his home with the items mentioned in the charge.
Shaw was sentenced to six months in prison.

If he has a past record for stealing then he deserves six months or less for the second offense. Sometimes people steal until they get caught. But I see cases in Guyana where people get heavier sentences for petty crimes.
