President Donald Ramotar during walk-about at Main Big Lime

President Donald Ramotar, whilst participating in the Ministry of Tourism’s annual event on Main Street, ‘Main Big Lime’, said that the objective of the event was accomplished as it created a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for patrons.

“The atmosphere created is lovely with people relaxing and enjoying themselves together,” President Ramotar said.

The Head of State also said that the Main Big Lime is an extension of Christmas as the Christmas season is a time which brings people and families together as such communities come out and enjoy themselves together.

Because of this the Main Big Lime has now become a signature event on the list of tourist activities as it has grown popular among Guyanese residing overseas, who only visit for the season.

President Donald Ramotar shares a light moment with a family at his first walk-about as President at this year’s Main Big Lime

“It encourages Guyanese residing abroad to come home…it is another event they can look forward to, coming home for the holidays…it will pick up more in the future as it has the potential to become bigger,” President Ramotar said.

Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali, acting in the capacity of Tourism Minister said “the staff would have done a good job as the time for planning and marketing the event was limited”.

Ali also mentioned that the focus of the tourism sector would see more private/public partnerships like GUYEXPO and Building Expo which serve to further boost Guyana’s tourism industry.

“There are lots in store for the tourism industry as many opportunities exist…the industry can be built around the cultural heritage of the Country using activities like MASHRAMANI and other such events,” Minister Ali said.

The event which proved to be an overwhelming success despite inclement weather, attracted hundreds who came out to mingle, lime and have fun.

Boots were erected on the avenue of Main Street by Guyana Tourism Authority and local Producers of Arts, Crafts and beverages. Other booths erected provided children with the opportunity of participating in games for toys.

The annual event is aimed at promoting the Guyanese unique culture, while providing tourists and citizens with a spectacular occasion to have “reunion” every year.

This is according to many overseas-based Guyanese who spoke with the Government Information Agency, during the event which saw the participation of several arts and craft booths showcasing Guyanese culture and heritage.

President Ramotar during first walk-about at the event as Head of State took the opportunity to greet participants.

The first Main Big Lime was held in 1999, with specific emphasis placed on promoting Guyanese tradition and culture.

Picture speak a thousand lies. I was there for a short while and left before Ramotar arrived. THese Afros were bussed in just like they did at election time. But overall, Afros are a happy people here in Guyana. Problem is they are being promised all kinds of everything from the Afro racists guyanese Afros in America.

Afros have to come to terms with the fact that PPP power will be there for the next generation but we coolies must realize we owe Afros something in return. I made a proposal to the PPP to help passify the Afros including free rations, etc. Indians just have too much and Afros nothing. We must take from the Indians and give to Afros. I don't see why Indians should feel bad, this was what papa Cheddie would have done.

We Indians are just too greedy. We need to share around more. Just wuking and wuking and pocketing profits is not fair, not right. I don't understand we coolies and diss greed, we greedy foa wuk, we greedy foa money. Greedy foa wuk is not a bad concept, but we should share the bread around. Why we so greddy, I never understand. These poor oppressed Afros need our help, we need to correct this historical wrong which we have been doing for 150+ years.
Good for Guyana, the people need something to do during the Christmas season. The main lime is a great idea despite all the negativity coming from the detractors. I could evolve into an even better event as people get more creative. It is a testament to its longevity as we see it surviving for over 5 years.

To get rich in Guyana you need connections within the PPP, and they don't take 'I owe You' slips.

Come donk here and see for yourself han. We Indos are rich and the poor Indians are lazy. With the advantage given to us by the Brits, the PNC and now PPP, why are Indians poor. I must be something wrong with them. They deserve to lash to get them going.
Some people simply sit on their asses and dream, others get off their asses, be creative and PROGRESS!!!!

Nonsense, the problem with Blacks is that they mostly look for entitlements. They need to pool their resources and invest like the Indians do. If you examine how some Indians become successful you will note that they help each other and pass down the knowledge through generations. The majority of Afro's are only interested in the here and now, the ones who emulate the Indians tend to become successful as you see with many of the affluent Blacks.

To an extent the playing field is not level in Guyana. Contracts and other oppertunities are in favor for the most part to folks who are affiliated to the ruling party and this is wrong.
I am not thrilled about this "Main Big Lime" thing that is held each year and fetted by top government officials. It attracts people who are interested in having a good time. Guyanese leaders need to emphasize the importance of hard work and sacrifice to achieve individual success and boost the economy at the same time. Big Lime is fine but don't make people feel they need to party every week to be happy. This type of event does attract too many decent people. Too many riff raffs .

Tell dem, and all Indians have that connection, that's why we rich and have so much to waste while our Afro bros walk around with no shoes and clothes and go hungry. Indians are just too damn selfish. Same shit we did under the PNC.

Stop yuh lies. Indians were given "most Favoured race" by the Brits, PNC and now PPP. This gave us an unfair advantage which now makes it impossible for Afros to get their share of the pie. And that Burnham was wicked, he nationalized and tek everything and gave it to us Indians. It's now time we correct this, it's our liability, our responsibility for all the wrongs we done for 150+ years.

From what I understand from many of my Afro bros here, it was not level for 150 years. They told me that is why every once in a while they level the field with lil slo fiah mo fiah and that's why fineman got mad and level some in Lusignan. It's really not nice what we coolies have been doing since we arrived.

Why you say that man. Afros looting, burning, killing, robbing, raping etc is a reaction to opression. They re poor cuz we Indians did it to them. Look how we got all the previliges under the PNC, we are too good at wukking and mekking money, we need to give some away of face the wrath of the oppressed Afro youths. Why am I a disgrace for proposing what's right.

believe me ... black people don't want to emulate indians.

What the hell makes you believe indos are better than blacks? You are freaking crazy. Do you see the amount of black businessmen who are successful in the great USofA and they definitely don't emulate indians. They have black people here who don't run mom and shop outfits but run their own corporations and they don't emulate indians.
