In September, Government allocated $82.9M for the construction of the Mahaica Market, and as has become the norm with this Administration, its officials ensure that Government receives value for money.

In this vein, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker today visited the site of the market to check on the progress of its construction.

Minister Whittaker expressed satisfaction with the progress made thus far, and said that he has no doubt that the project will be completed within the specified nine- month time frame. The foundation of the market is complete and the curb walls are being worked on currently.

The two-storey building will house 65 stalls and the vendors have expressed satisfaction with the pace of the market as the building will ease the congestion on the Mahaica market road.

The Unity/Vereeniging Neighbhourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has been assisting the Local Government ministry with the monitoring of the market construction, ensuring that there are no encumbrances that may delay its construction. The contract was awarded to C. Dookie and Sons Contracting Services.

Minister Whittaker also checked on the construction of the Haslingston/Grove tarmac that is being built at a cost of $20M and is expected to be completed within three months.

Both of the projects are Government of Guyana (GOG)/ Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) ventures being implemented under the Ministry of Local Government.
