Local Government and Regional Development Minister Norman Whittaker and team engaging the Leguan NDC councillors and residents

Since being appointed as Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Mr. Norman Whittaker has been visiting the different Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) across the country, meeting with the councillors and residents with the aim of getting to know the people at the community level.

Minister Whittaker continued his visits today with a trip to the Essequibo Islands of Leguan and Wakenaam, accompanied by Region Three Chairman, Julius Faerber, Senior Regional Development Officer, Pooran Persaud and Education Coordinator, Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Narine Ramroop.

The visit allowed the minister to familarise himself with the developments taking place on the islands and to address the concerns of the councillors and residents.

Minister Whittaker expressed pleasure over the level of development that has taken place on both islands which are agricultural in nature, while also noting that Region Three as a whole has seen development.

He said the PPP/C government does not measure progress from what it has achieved but rather from the depth from which the administration would have started.

Billions of dollars have been invested and spent to put in place infrastructure and social services to achieve this level of development, where the country is annually experiencing increased annual growth, he said.

All these are developments that are taking place in spite of what detractors are saying, Whittaker said. He posited that what was not delivered today will be addressed tomorrow.

He said that the important thing to note is that in the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), the residents have a government that is committed to addressing their needs but for Government’s commitment to be translated into action, this calls for accompanying resources such as the people getting involved at the community level in some aspect of developments.

He explained that Government prioritises development in the communities, and as “the country is in the election season and at this point in time political leaders, with political agendas will be coming into the different communities feeling that they can lure and mislead people by just focusing on those things that the People Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Government has not been able to deliver.”
