Lindeners cry for relief from bauxite dust

A group of Lindeners are calling for relief from a dust situation caused by the Bosai bauxite plant in the once-thriving mining town. Several residents, including Regional Councillor Judith Rogers, were present at the AFC’s weekly news conference on Wednesday in Georgetown. “The matter was raised at the regional level but it seems like the regional chairman is putting a deaf ear to this matter and not looking at the interest of the people of Linden,” Rogers stated. The councillor called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to intervene “urgently.”

Several protests have been mounted over the years about the dust pollution in Linden. Another resident, Mark Griffith stated that the dust has resulted in many Lindeners suffering from respiratory ailments. “Everyday you can go to the hospital and see the elderly and the children packing at the hospital with cough, throat problems and these kinds of things and all they keep doing is promising; I think we’re totally de up with these promises,” he stated. According to Griffith, whenever the matter is raised the company makes a note of it until the issue comes up again. “We’re asking that somebody do something for because it’s affecting us terribly.” Another Lindener said the dust has led to him having to wear spectacles.

The AFC in a statement on the issue said the residents of Silvertown, Christianburg and McKenzie have been enduring the dust pollution for more than 40 years, first from the Linmine Bauxite Plant and then its successor the Bosai Bauxite Plant. “Residents have said that they were promised by Omai, the previous operator of this plant that dust collecting technology would be installed. This never materialized. With the taking over of the plant by the Chinese company Bosai, the promise was again touted. To date, no dust collecting technology has been installed,” the statement read. It added that Bosai had mentioned a deadline of September 13 for the installation of the apparatus but information reaching the party suggests that this deadline would not be met.

The AFC pointed out that the New Silver City Secondary School is located close to the dust emitting bauxite plant an the staff have complained that the dust is sometimes so heavy they have to keep the windows closed. “This creates its own ventilation problems. It is reported that a number of air conditioning units were promised and donated but were never installed,” the party said. It added that a number of pupils have had to be taken to the hospital because of the dust and stated that it is an issue that should have engaged the attention of the Ministry of Education. “The AFC, in addition to calling on Bosai to expedite the installation of the dust collecting technology, calls also on the EPA and the Ministry of Health to give serious attention to this issue. Residents have said that EPA has been apprised of this issue.”

The party acknowledged that there had been a meeting at the level of the RDC involving both Bosai and the EPA, however, it said residents have not received any relief in spite of the involvement of the EPA. According to the party, “environmental consciousness and responsibility” must be more stringently factored into the privatization agreements inked with large foreign investors in particular.

Persistent Dust Pollution in Linden

For more than 40 years, the residents of Silvertown, Christianburg and Mckenzie in the mining town of Linden have been afflicted by an enduring dust pollution emanating from what is now the Bosai Bauxite Plant and what used to be the old Linmine Bauxite Plant located in the heart of Linden.

The New Silver City Secondary School, it should be noted, is located in close proximity to the dust emitting bauxite plant. Staff at this school have said that there are days when the dust is excessive, heavy and comes with an unbearable stench similar to that of rotten eggs. As a result, they have said, the windows of the school have to be kept closed. This creates its own ventilation problems. It is reported that a number of air conditioning units were promised and donated but were never installed. It is a fact that a number of pupils have had to be taken to the hospital because of this dust. The AFC submits that this is an issue which should have previously engaged the attention of the Ministry of Education.

Residents have said that they were promised by Omai, the previous operator of this plant that dust collecting technology would be installed. This never materialized. With the taking over of the plant by the Chinese company Bosai, the promise was again touted. To date, no dust collecting technology has been installed. Bosai has in fact mentioned a deadline of September 13, 2011 for the installation of this apparatus. However information reaching the AFC’s councilors on the RDC suggests that this September 13 deadline would not be met.

The communities in close vicinity to this plant have suffered in a number of ways. First and most important, a number of residents have been diagnosed with respiratory illnesses and even cancer. Persons who are asthmatic and suffer from sinuses have experienced much difficulty. Secondly, and similar to the Cane Grove dust situation, the maintenance of clean homes has been rendered quite difficult. The AFC contends that when one contemplates the duration of this problem and the very clear cut solution that exists; the unacceptability of this situation comes to the fore.

The AFC, in addition to calling on Bosai to expedite the installation of the dust collecting technology, calls also on the EPA and the Ministry of Health to give serious attention to this issue. Residents have said that EPA has been apprised of this issue. There was a meeting at the level of the RDC involving both Bosai and the EPA. However, residents have not received any relief in spite of the involvement of the EPA. Some months ago, the AFC brought to the forefront of national attention, the enduring dust pollution which had gone on for years in Cane Grove.

The AFC has also forwarded the view that such environmental consciousness and responsibility must be more stringently factored into the privatization agreements inked with especially large foreign investors. This is what is meant by the ideal of tempering the excesses of capitalism. We have certainly seen the negative consequences of the failure to include firm clauses of social responsibity in the irresponsible actions of Rusal who has demonstrated contempt for the workers of Linden.

The opposition will say abra-gadabra and make the dust disappear for the Lindeners. I don't see anyone crying rather than someone put them up to picket against the ruling party.

Same way the AFC said "abra-gadabra" and made the dust pollution that was affecting Cane Grove for ten years disappear flag

This is why I asked if perhaps you are slow...nothing to be ashamed about...the first picture is of the press conference and the second is but a reference photo. I rather know you are slow, than a paid blogger, which profession has no honour and principle.

Especially now that few Lindeners benefit from bauxite. Only a few hundred of them now work in that idustry.

Dust pollution in the Mackenzie-Wismar-Christianburg and surrounding areas existed from the time the plants were in operation.

Similar types of dust pollution exist in other parts of the world.

It is about time these people complain louder. Thank you AFC for looking after the people's interest.

It's quite obvious that the aluminium content of the dust has affected your brains. Aluminum is a known cause of senile dementia .

The topic is that Lindeners complain about pollution. Your response is they must just accept it. Lindeners want to know why you feel this way about them. VERY MUCH ON TOPIC.

I see. And your arrogant reaction that this is not a problem that ought to concern Lindeners is not on Topic? The fact that they demonstrate against this means they do not agree with you.

Bauxite plant dust pollution affecting Lindeners - requisite technology promised, not yet implemented
AUGUST 27, 2011 | BY KNEWS | FILED UNDER NEWS

After enduring decades of dust pollution, the residents of Silvertown, Christianburg in the mining town of Linden are calling on the Ministry of Health, EPA and other relevant authorities to investigate the Bosai Bauxite Plant and what used to be the old Linmine Bauxite Plant located in the heart of Linden which is producing the dust. Residents explained that a number of them have been diagnosed with respiratory illnesses and even cancer. Persons who are asthmatic and suffer from sinuses have experienced much difficulty.

Secondly, and similar to the Cane Grove dust situation, the maintenance of clean homes has been rendered quite difficult. However, residents said they were promised by Omai, the previous operator of this plant that dust-collecting technology would be installed. This never materialized. With the taking over of the plant by the Chinese company, Bosai, the promise was again touted. To date, no dust collecting technology has been installed. Bosai has in fact mentioned a deadline of September 13, 2011 for the installation of this apparatus. However, the Alliance For Change (AFC) has indicated that information reaching its councillors on the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) suggests that this September 13 deadline would not be met.

Residents of Linden expressing their concerns at a recent AFC press conference.

National Coordinator of the AFC, Neilson McKenzie, and a group of residents at a recent press conference at the party’s headquarters expressed disgust at the present situation in the mining town. McKenzie said for more than 40 years, the residents of Silvertown, Christianburg and Mackenzie are suffering from the dust situation, and the New Silver City Secondary School, it should be noted, is located in proximity to the dust-emitting bauxite plant. McKenzie explained that the staff at the school had said that there are days when the dust is excessive, heavy, and comes with an unbearable stench, similar to that of rotten eggs. Adding that a number of air conditioning units were promised and donated, but were never installed, McKenzie pointed out that it is a fact that a number of pupils have had to be taken to the hospital because of this dust pollution. He said the party submits that this is an issue which should have previously engaged the attention of the Ministry of Education. “The AFC contends that when one contemplates the duration of this problem and the very clear cut solution that exists; the unacceptability of this situation comes to the fore.”

Residents said that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been apprised of this issue. There was a meeting at the level of the RDC involving both Bosai and the EPA. However, residents have not received any relief in spite of the involvement of the EPA. “We have certainly seen the negative consequences of the failure to include firm clauses of social responsibity in the irresponsible actions of Rusal who has demonstrated contempt for the workers of Linden,” McKenzie said.
